The New McCarthyism

And the Clintons are in the thick of it. Stanley Fish:

The literature the Clinton campaign is passing around about Obama and Ayers cannot be explained away or rationalized. It features bold heads proclaiming that Ayers doesn’t regret his Weathermen activities (what does that have to do with Obama? Are we required to repudiate things acquaintances of our have not said?), that Ayers contributed $200 to Obama’s senatorial campaign (do you take money only from people of whose every action you approve?), that Obama admired Ayers’s 1997 book on the juvenile justice system, that Ayers and Obama participated on a panel examining the role of intellectuals in public life. That subversive event was sponsored by The Center for Public Intellectuals, an organization that also sponsored an evening conversation (moderated by me) between those notorious radicals Richard Rorty and Judge Richard Posner (also a neighbor of Ayers’s; maybe the Federalist Society should expel him).

Gasp. Alert Hewitt and Kristol. Richard Posner is a closet communist. Fish is too kind to the Clintons in the rest of his column. But I have to say that his observation about the tactics of this campaign - classic McCarthyite tactics long practised by Rove - is on the mark. And it's interesting to me that these smears have been aimed primarily at the most obvious agents of real change in this election: Ron Paul and now Barack Obama. When people have ideas and arguments that actually reach and move people, and you don't have a good argument in response, smearing is the logical next step. And smearing is what the neocons and the far right and the Clintons have been reveling in.

To which one can only respond: don't let these people smear your future away. It only works if you let them get away with it.

Ah, the associating of Ron Paul to Obama as equal threats. Nice try. Doesn't fly. Obama was an invention for the puppet show.

Ah, the associating of Ron Paul to Obama as equal threats.

They happen to be two candidates that Andrew Sullivan has long supported.

With reason, I might add.

One is true change.

The other is a diaper change.

You were complaining about some (unidentified) Obama supporter on this forum complaining about Ron Paul doing something that he tolerated from Obama.

Now you're complaining when Andrew Sullivan complains about Ron Paul and Obama getting the same treatment.

It would seem neither consistency nor inconsistency will satisfy you.

What? LOL!

I don't remember anything that RP 'tolerated' from Obama. Probably missed that one.

I'm usually satisfied with consistency and a single standard.

Perhaps you should practice your standards within your knitting group first.

But not, apparently, when it's Andrew Sullivan's consistent criticism of McCarthyite-type smears against both Obama and Ron Paul.

McCarthy was correct.

Every single Commie/symp and every single NAZI/symp should have been hung long ago.

You probably wouldn't be Opooping all over 4um today had Joe more support back then...

Dang, I like that!

However, we probably shouldn't be too hard on the young fellow, OoooBama! , after all, he's going to make Exxon give us free gas from now on, according to his commercials.

Hillary! is going to also. Gawd, how I love them both! So much so that I asked my neighbor if I could vote for them both.

He told me that I sure could, because when he programs the machines before they're sent to the polling places the outcome can't be changed by pushing the buttons.

It's Hillary! OoooBama! & FreeGas! for me!

Are you kidding me? He's only promising me to lower the price of gas by 18.4 cent per gallon, and then only through the summer, the bastard.

The EPA has estimated what the McCain energy tax would mean to consumers. Since the bill’s provisions are phased in, the full cost of the tax would not be felt for a number of years. But in a letter to Senator McCain dated July 2007, the EPA estimated that the tax will be about $.26 cents in current dollars per gallon of gasoline by 2030 and $.68 cents per gallon by 2050. For electricity, the EPA estimates that the McCain energy tax would increase individual’s electric bills by 22 percent in 2030 and 25 percent in 2050.

The effect on the economy of the McCain tax would be similar to any other broad-based tax. In the EPA’s own words:

The present value of the cumulative reduction in real GDP for the 2012-2030 period ranges from $660 billion to $2.1 trillion…the cumulative reduction in the present value of real GDP for the 2012-2050 period ranges from about $1.6 trillion to $5.2 trillion.
