McCain had this to say: McCain Rips Into Evangelists Senator blasts Robertson, Falwell in attack on Christian conservatives Carolyn Lochhead, Chronicle Washington Bureau Tuesday, February 29, 2000 (02-29) 04:00 PDT Washington, D.C. -- On the eve of primaries in Virginia and Washington, Republican presidential candidate John McCain ripped into Christian televangelists Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell yesterday as "agents of intolerance'' who "shame our faith, our party and our country.'' . . . HOLDING BACK NOTHING Yesterday, McCain held back nothing in his attack on Falwell and Robertson, calling them right-wing versions of Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan and the Rev. Al Sharpton, a New York activist. McCain also called the televangelists "mirror images'' of "the union bosses who have subordinated the interests of working families to their own ambition.'' ``We are the party of Ronald Reagan, not Pat Robertson,'' McCain declared, as the crowd of more than 2,000 cheered. "We are the party of Theodore Roosevelt, not the party of special interests. We are the party of Abraham Lincoln, not Bob Jones. Join us. Join us. Join us, and welcome anyone of good faith to our ranks. We should be, we must be, we will be a party as big as the country we serve.'' Robertson, a Bush supporter, had sent out recorded messages to Christian conservatives in Michigan before its primary last week calling McCain's campaign chairman, Warren Rudman, a "vicious bigot.'' When they supported Bush, McCain called Fallwell and Robertson right-wing versions of Farrakhan. And just how does one discern a difference between those two giants of the clergy, and Hagee and Parsley? And what does McCain say when some of their ilk support him? Rod Parsley becomes "a truly great leader, a moral compass, a spiritual guide." McCain becomes “very honored by Pastor John Hagee’s endorsement.” So speaketh the straight talk express. Ol' Preacher Rod can touch 'em on the forehead and lay 'em out almost as good as Benny Hinn, of Let the Bodies Hit the Floor fame. Catholic League president Bill Donohue addressed this today: “There are plenty of staunch evangelical leaders who are pro-Israel, but are not anti-Catholic. John Hagee is not one of them. Indeed, for the past few decades, he has waged an unrelenting war against the Catholic Church. For example, he likes calling it ‘The Great Whore,’ an ‘apostate church,’ the ‘anti-Christ,’ and a ‘false cult system.’ To hear the bigot in his own words, click here. Note: he isn’t talking about the Buddhists. “In Hagee’s latest book, Jerusalem Countdown, he calls Hitler a Catholic who murdered Jews while the Catholic Church did nothing. ‘The sell-out of Catholicism to Hitler began not with the people but with the Vatican itself,’ he writes. “For the record, Hitler persecuted the Catholic Church and was automatically excommunicated in 1931—two years before he assumed power—when he acted as best man at Joseph Goebbel’s Protestant wedding. Hitler even bragged about his separation from the Church. As for doing nothing about the Holocaust, Sir Martin Gilbert reminds us that Goebbels denounced Pope Pius XII for his 1942 Christmas message criticizing the Nazis (the New York Times lauded the pope for doing so in an editorial for two years in a row). Much to Hagee’s chagrin, Gilbert also says that Pius XII saved three quarters of the Jews in Rome, and that more Jews were saved proportionately in Catholic countries than Protestant countries. Indeed, Israeli diplomat Pinchas Lapide credited the Catholic Church with saving 860,000 Jews. Hagee said that McCain “is a man of principle, [who] does not stand boldly on both sides of any issue.” McCain, who had been courting the endorsement for over a year, said that he was “very honored by Pastor John Hagee’s endorsement.” Demonstrating how wildly out of the American religious and political mainstream Hagee’s views are, McCain’s acceptance of Hagee’s endorsement was condemned today by conservative William Donohue, president of the Catholic League. I knew Hitler was bad, but I never knew he was the best man at a Protestant wedding. No wonder the Church excommunicated him.
