I have to be honest, I'm completely distressed at what's happened to this forum. The fighting and the distrust between those for and those against Obama has gotten to the point where, in my opinion, it's destroying the forum. What's the point of having an open free speech venue when everyone is bozo'ing everyone else? When I read my mission statement and what Freedom4um was created to be, I don't even recognize the place anymore. There will be changes made in the near future as I decide what is best for the continued growth of this forum.

"Debate" is not necessarily the be-all end-all. What's wrong with a magazine that gives different opinions about world events? Sure the writers may not read one another's articles, but the general readership will. Do you want to FORCE the writers to read each other's articles? If you want all the articles to agree, maybe, but that may be because some writers walk away.

Since the bozo has become a tool to demoralize in my opinion (I just picked up another during this thread) I think a MAXIMUM number might be the way to go. LF had a goofy rating system that was misused in a similar fashion. If anyone has more than three to five people they can't stand, perhaps they're in the wrong place.

If the webmaster can't be trusted, as you have said, you have your rights to do whatever you want, then, of course, it's up to everyone to decide whether it's worth it to accomodate your nose in their butt.
I'm afraid it was too subtle, but I enjoyed it. I once suggested a similar idea for Bush/Cheney - we create this alternate reality for them to live in with simulated war/torture/destruction/rape/offshore-accts so they can leave the world alone and still be happy. Rather like the joke about Baptists in heaven, they have this huge wall around them so they can think they are the only ones in heaven. Hey, that's almost like the bozo filter - I've made a full circle.

Chrissy, that's only true if there are only 2 sides. If you need a break, you might consider temporarily banning anyone you feel might be causing a problem. If that includes me than I'll gladly honor that for you and it's okay. I would come back when you decide. I now agree there is a problem that should be addressed.
I agree with robin. That is the right of anyone, regardless of their opinions. I also admit to bozoing two, one of which is a shill, Mister Clean, the other for his absolutely foul mouth, which I do not appreciate. I have come close to doing the same for another, but have resisted. I am also on bozo from considerably more, which may have something to do with my opinion about Obama.... perhaps? Just my opinion, but if you do away with the bozo, you will need to establish a committee to resolve banishments, at least I would think so. Or, you may find that the spam from shills will overwhelm the genuine posters, of which there are many in 4um. The bozo filter is a wonderful tool for limiting the shills in their ability to disrupt the free exchange of ideas. I think that most of this problem will disappear once the queen is elected anyway. This, of course, is just my opinion for what it is worth.

I bozo nobody. I want to know everyone's views whether I agree with them or not. With open free speech there is bound to be some disagreement. After this election I think things will settle down around here. There are a lot of people here who are really into politics.

You were told at the sign up that the PM's weren't secure and that you should act accordingly. This was done for Neil's protection more than anything else. There was an incident in the past where PMs did get read. People assumed THOSE PMs were secure when they weren't, so a different tact was taken here, i.e., here you were told not to assume security in the PMs. Neil is right. He can't prove that he didn't read them and it's silly to ask him to. But I've known Neil for many years and I seriously doubt if he does read them. It simply isn't in character for him.

I started off with a just a few on bozo for the beyond rude. Then I expanded it to blatant racists, the generally annoying and trolls. I intend to remove names over time and see how it goes, but it is what I need now.

I think part of what you're watching is exactly what Claire Wolf describes when she says we are in that in between state of attempting to work through a broken and corrupt system and outright shooting the bas-. I spend time reading through another forum's general discussion board and the same discussion is going on. So far, the only guideline has been to keep the conservation as civil as possible and let the debate take it's course. Even with that guideline, harsh exchanges happen. So know you're not alone. My two cents is to do nothing. Nothing other than do your best to keep the conversation as civil as possible. At the very least, I would be slow to implement any change and wait until the Primaries conclude, re-evaluate and go from there. My other two cents, is if you can arrange for it, take a couple/three days away from the board to rest, de-stress and come back re-energized.

There is no guarantee of privacy in the PMs. That's the only way to defeat a charge that they are being snooped into. If you want a secure link, use the PM to give the person a one off hotmail address and use that for your private discussion. Be that as it may, I seriously doubt if anyone is reading your PMs.

Continue what? Breaking down into tiny, non communicative camps? LF was ruined by an organized "rating system" and now the bozo is being used in the same way. I think some modicum of respect needs to be enforced and a limit to the number of bozo's. People can rotate "offenders" on and off as needed, but the current system is being used as a tool.
regarding the bozo, i think the solution is a compromise. we'll keep the feature, but limit the number of spaces. i'll be making the decision on what that number should be.
Perhaps you need to MYOB about who puts who on bozo. The kill file function has been a part of this software for years. And opponents in an argument or lively discussion almost never change their minds in the course of an argument or lively discussion so the smart money has always been on a lurker focus in forum comments in the first place. I have no sympathy for this sort of attack based on such a naval contemplation point.
I can ignore with a simple scroll by, I don't need the bozo function. In this tangent of attack, the malfunction lies with the Prima Donnas whining about who bozos them, not those using the function as designed.
You admitted it neil. Like i said, it's between you and Christine. Perhaps a software change where access to read is permitted only by the forum owner.
I am confused. Why should anyone give a rats ass if someone has them on bozo? I think the real solution is to take the bozo count off the set up page. Then you wouldn't know how many people had you on bozo.

Which is why the bozo counts are not publicized. If people weren't starting threads about how many people have them on bozo, JT, then maybe this wouldn't rise to the level of a rating system. Is that why you started that thread? Have you been campaigning for this change?
