it will burst through in a geyser of considerable force. Deprived of any other outlet, this eruption could shake – and even shatter – the very foundations of our constitutional republic

Well, Justin, many key tenets of the republic are kaput.

Secondly, anticipation of a people's revolt in America has been proclaimed with certitude for decades. Ain't gonna happen, televised or not.

The mechanics of America mitigate against any huge popular movement. The Founding Fathers were as fearful of a mob as of the British. The beauty of the American System is that it essentially absorbs and neutralises any ideology that is against it.

It's not the war, it's the price of gas. Bush's approval is a reflection of the gas price, not anything about the war.

We know he's against it: you can hear it in the phrasing of his evasions, in his plea for "direct talks" with the Iranians and his call for a regional settlement. Yet he fails to take an unequivocal stand. He could hit Hillary over the head with her own hawkishness, yet he fails to do so. Whether this is a product of his inherent indecisiveness – indicated, in another instance, by his failure to ditch Jeremiah Wright soon enough – or some ideological-political glitch in his thinking is hard to say. In any case, neither possibility bodes well for his presidential prospects.

Nevertheless, Raimondo clearly prefers Obama to the alternatives.

To reason, indeed, he was not in the habit of attending. His mode of arguing, if it is to be so called, was one not uncommon among dull and stubborn persons, who are accustomed to be surrounded by their inferiors. He asserted a proposition; and, as often as wiser people ventured respectfully to show that it was erroneous, he asserted it again, in exactly the same words, and conceived that, by doing so, he at once disposed of all objections. - Macaulay, "History of England," Vol. 1, Chapter 6, on James II.
