Clinton Touts White Support

By Kate Phillips

As if the divisions between race and gender in the Democratic Party hadn’t been further exposed through Tuesday night’s exit polls — and by a very heated exchange on CNN between Donna Brazile and Paul Begala — Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s interview with USA Today on Wednesday is further mining those tense depths.

“I have a much broader base to build a winning coalition on,” she said in the interview, citing an article by The Associated Press. It “found how Senator Obama’s support among working, hard-working Americans, white Americans, is weakening again, and how whites in both states who had not completed college were supporting me.

“There’s a pattern emerging here,” she said.

While she said her remarks weren’t meant to be divisive, they’re already whipping around the Internet. “These are the people you have to win if you’re a Democrat in sufficient numbers to actually win the election. Everybody knows that,” she said in the interview. (Hint, hint, message to the superdelegates still undeclared.)

In Indiana alone, six in 10 white voters went for Mrs. Clinton, where she narrowly won the primary.

Bill Burton, a spokesman for the Obama campaign, told the newspaper that Mr. Obama had made inroads in Tuesday’s contests. And he added that her comments “are not true and frankly disappointing.”

On Tuesday night, we mentioned the dustup between two Democratic pundits, Ms. Brazile and Mr. Begala, who engaged in a prime-time debate about the coalitions being built by Mr. Obama or Mrs. Clinton. Mr. Begala, a Clinton supporter, said the party could not win in November with just “eggheads and African-Americans,” that the party could not ignore white middle-class voters. Ms. Brazile, who said she was not “undecided but undeclared” when it came to her choice for a candidate, shot back that Mr. Begala’s notions were dividing the party. (And that she’d chugged down many a beer with Joe and Jane “six-pack” in an effort to woo white voters.)

We’re revisiting their spirited exchange to demonstrate how divided party loyalists are right now.

You can say that again.

Especially since she said this right after the North Carolina primary, i.e., the last primary in which large numbers of blacks will vote.

To reason, indeed, he was not in the habit of attending. His mode of arguing, if it is to be so called, was one not uncommon among dull and stubborn persons, who are accustomed to be surrounded by their inferiors. He asserted a proposition; and, as often as wiser people ventured respectfully to show that it was erroneous, he asserted it again, in exactly the same words, and conceived that, by doing so, he at once disposed of all objections. - Macaulay, "History of England," Vol. 1, Chapter 6, on James II.

I agree Hillary's remarks are trash. But unfortunately they are also newsworthy.

You aren't really saying that 90% of Blacks voting for Oh'bummer means that they were voting for him because he is not white are you?

You mean blacks can be racists too?

Why just walk through any Black neighborhood at night after dark and see how safe you are whitey.

I'll send flowers to the funeral.

Forget about after dark. Broad daylight is actually worse. They can see your skin color easier then.

I guess you weren't around in 1952 or 1956.

I have a feeling the tactic won't work as well for McCain as it did for Ike, by the way.

No. ANY black neighborhood regardless of economic status is not safe for whites. Yet there are plenty of poor white neighborhoods where you are safer than even rich neighborhoods.

Ever been in South Boston? I'm Irish, and I felt unsafe there. I also can't say I felt very safe walking through Portuguese East Cambridge late at night (as I often had to do in grad school).

By the way, I grew up in the Bronx and live in an integrated neighborhood with lots of blacks and Hispanics right now. I feel reasonably safe.

Maybe your definition of Egghead is different than mine.

Maybe you mean just people that like to be called professors?

That may be true in some areas but not in others. So, take a nice stroll through the 'hood after ten and get back to me.

The reality is that yes, you might get away with it a few times, or even quite a few, but a single individual walking through such a neighborhood is taking their life in their hands if you aren't the right color (or if you are black wearing the wrong colors).

I do not like that reality. I had an uncle who lived in the hood, but he looked Indian, and just made a rep for himself by waving around a .357 on his porch, and so no one would mess with "that crazy Indian".

However, if you are guilty of looking white there are neighborhoods where that marks you as a target, and sooner or later someone is going to "hit the target".

I don't like that it is that way, in fact is saddens me that there is that much animosity. Take a nice stroll in Compton or West L.A., etc., ...

The real denial comes from people who won't own up to the fact that blacks make up about 12% of the US population while being about 50% of the violent felons in our prisons (not to mention close to half of welfare recipients).

I can say that blacks are by and large poorer than whites, and they are by and large the first arrested and last released, the first fired and the last hired. It wouldn't surprise me that there are a bunch of 'em on welfare

So it's not their fault...

I could give a crap about prison statistics. They don't mean anything when you jail 5 times as many people as every other nation on earth, except that we are a prison state. As for the welfare recipients, I couldn't actually find a demographic breakdown on race and welfare recipients, so I can't answer that one

The reason we have more murderers in prison is that we have more murders than the rest of the western world. The reason for that is that we have more blacks than the rest of the western world.

You say prison statistics don't mean anything. I'm not talking about victimless crimes like pot possession, prostititution, and so on. I'm talking about murder, rape, armed robbery - the sort of offenses that even the most "liberal" society agrees people ought to be put away for.

If we have more people in prison for violent felonies, it's because we have more violent felons when compared to western European countries. So the statistics on who commits murders, rapes, and armed robberies mean a lot to anyone who isn't holding on to "equality" BS.

Surely you don't believe that preposterous statement.

I don't agree with the absolute "ANY" but...

The single best indicator of the level of violent crime in an American census area is the percentage of the population that is black or hispanic and under the age of 18. Poverty is actually one of the weakest predictors.

Jazmyn Singleton, a black Duke senior agrees. After living in a predominantly white dorm freshman year, she lives with five African-American women in an all-black dormitory. “Both communities tend to be very judgmental,” says Ms. Singleton, ruefully. “There is pressure to be black. The black community can be harsh. People will say there are 600 blacks on campus but only two-thirds are ‘black’ because you can’t count blacks who hang out with white people.”

If the supers threw to Hillary, they would be subsequently vindicated by the behavior of blacks. If in the face of that behavior the party establishment stayed calmly firm, McCain would be toast, and probably the Republican party would too, for a long time.

Dems probably ain't that smart though.
