PITTSBURGH -- James Henry Smith was a zealous Pittsburgh Steelers fan in life, and even death could not keep him from his favorite spot: in a recliner, in front of a TV showing his beloved team in action.

Smith, 55, of Pittsburgh, died of prostate cancer Thursday. Because his death wasn't unexpected, his family was able to plan for an unusual viewing Tuesday night.

The Samuel E. Coston Funeral Home erected a small stage in a viewing room, and arranged furniture on it much as it was in Smith's home on game day Sundays.

Smith's body was on the recliner, his feet crossed and a remote in his hand. He wore black and gold silk pajamas, slippers and a robe. A pack of cigarettes and a beer were at his side, while a high-definition TV played a continuous loop of Steelers highlights.

"I couldn't stop crying after looking at the Steeler blanket in his lap," said his sister, MaryAnn Nails, 58. "He loved football and nobody did (anything) until the game went off. It was just like he was at home."

Longtime friend Mary Jones called the viewing "a celebration."

"I saw it and I couldn't even cry," she said. "People will see him the way he was."

Smith's burial plans were more traditional -- he'll be laid to rest in a casket. Subscribe to *Utter Nonsense*

No hypocrisy here, I must admit that.

He couldn't have been a TRUE Steeler's fan - where was his Terrible Towel???

Not a bad idea for a funeral though

At first repulsed, now I see the beauty of it all - we can be staged nude, or in our underwear, posting happily...

Dear God, we have all lost our minds.

Are you stewing it or pickling it?

I think you just described Badeye's funeral, although there are many who post almost as often as him.

I actually think it's a nifty idea as far as "theme funerals" go. Death should be celebrated and not morned.

Hell, my dad was buried with 3 bottles of good Irish whiskey, a case of cigars and some home brew.

I personally want to be sent to a good taxidermist.

Scooping it up with little flat-nosed shovel if I can get near it without puking, and tossing over the fence if I can keep my balance. I never figured on evil looking squirrel mummies when I decided to buy a house, I just wanted to get away from the crackheads throwing barbeque grills off their balconies at three in the morning.

Really? I know where at least one is hiding, I'll sell it to the highest bidder.

Agree on both counts...I AM going to re-do my will to provide for a wake with all bills paid.

It's a mindless job - but someone has to do it! Thank you, I appreciate the opportunity to help lighten everyone's mood - even if my post is about a funeral....

Even so, the joys of homeownership are HIGHLY overrated once you pass the double nickle.

You should have found a complex with cocaine addicts - they tend to be more affluent and calm in their partying.

Cheers, Daks.

Yeah, like anybody would actually show up for that asshole's funeral service.

It's like what the sheriff told John Wayne in his last movie The Shootist: "What I do on your grave won't pass for flowers!"

If a man has nothing that he is willing to die for, then he has nothing worth living for.

I'm pretty much used to that. What bothers me though, is being shot.

I can bring you a tomato or a cucumber, maybe a jalapeno, always a jalapeno, there's never enough damn jalapenos.

For being this involved, one would think he could have picked a better team.

I thrice invoke the name of Kordell, thereby relegating the Steelers to a full season of choking during the really important games. Particularly intra-division ones. :)

And I invoke the name of Chuck Knoll (blessed coach of all coaches!) so that you shall ever forth hear Myron Cope in all who speak to you.

But I do have to admit - your curse has worked well BEFORE you ever invoked it!
