This link provides very simple instructions on how to get free internet. All you need is a free AP within line of sight of the antenna. Antenna height helps.

This can be some rest areas along the interstate, Starbucks, McDonalds, Office Depot (I think...) and many others. You can get surprisingly good range. Please dont use this to rip off people that have home wifi. But unless it has an obvious AP name, you wont really know. Just be assured that you will find many signals in a city.

I have build this antenna, using a parabolic shaped heat lamp used in barns. $10.00 for the "antenna", $2-$3 for hardware, abotu %50 for the USB wifi adaptor, and maybe 1 hour to assemble it. It works.

Once you have the antenna, use NetStumbler to locate signals. It's automatic. Then use your USB adaptor software to connect to that signal. It is so much easier to use netstumbler to find signals, because you can just move the antenna by hand until it locates a signal.

You're welcome.

I built this a few years ago. I had to if I wanted reliable internet on the road. Sometimes I just used it to boost weak signals at truckstop APs. BTW, anyone living in Salt Lake City, the Bosselman truckstop has free internet. There is also a county in OR that has it. I have found many places with free internet that I could not access without this antenna.

And, it provides a nice layer of anonymity to those without pay websites. It doesn't help me much. I get .gov and .mil visitors all the time, and its a new site... I wish I could keep them off, or make them go thru the effort of using a proxy at least.

This may be a dumb question but if someone has wireless signal that they choose not secure or password-protect, how do you figure it's 'stealing' if others pick up and use the wireless signal? What is it costing them?

What is it costing them?

Bandwidth?

From what I understand, they have monthly bandwidth usage. Exceed that limit and they cut you off. And, it can be real easy to use up someone elses bandwidth.

Am I wrong?

And, it is illegal.

Ketherine Albrecht spoke about this on her show regarding one case in which a guy was arrested for something he allegedly downloaded.. she warned that if you have a wireless signal make sure no strangers can use it unauthorized , . they can potentially get the owner of the account in big trouble.
