A minister at Prestonwood Baptist Church faces a charge of online solicitation of a minor after police say he drove from Plano to Bryan to have sex with a 13-year-old girl.

The "girl" was a police officer pretending to be a teenager as part of an ongoing Internet sex sting. Joe Barron, one of about 40 ministers at the 26,000-member megachurch, could face up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine for the second-degree felony.

Computer equipment was seized from Mr. Barron's home, and police said they were investigating evidence he had online conversations with more than a dozen girls.

Bryan authorities say the minister began crying Thursday morning as police arrested him. "He said he was feeling guilt and shame and grief," said Bryan police Officer Lesley Malinak, a Police Department spokeswoman.

Mr. Barron, 52, was released Friday evening from the Brazos County Jail after posting $7,000 bail. Neither he nor his attorney could be reached for comment.

Church officials did not comment late Friday on Mr. Barron's current employment status. He has worked at Prestonwood for about 18 months as a minister to married adults, ages 42 to 58.

"We are disturbed and saddened by the reports we have heard and we are praying for the Barron family," said Mike Buster, executive pastor at Prestonwood. "We are fully cooperating with the police in their investigation."

Mr. Barron served from 2000 to 2003 as senior pastor at Northrich Baptist Church in Richardson, and before that was adult education pastor at First Baptist Church of Lewisville for 10 months, according to those churches.

Bryan police said Mr. Barron had been chatting for about two weeks with the officer who he thought was a juvenile. Police declined to talk in detail about the conversations, but they said they were sexually explicit.

On Tuesday, Mr. Barron asked the girl to skip school and meet him, police said.

"Of course, our officers replied that they would," Officer Malinak said. "He had been on a business trip and was coming to see her after he was done with this business trip."

Two days later, he made the three-hour drive to Bryan to meet the girl at a parking lot, chatting by phone with his potential victim on the way, police said. Police said he was arrested without incident.

Inside the car, which Mr. Barron had borrowed from his wife, police found a box of 10 condoms, a Web camera and headset that authorities believe he was going to give the girl, police said.

"It is common for people that are engaged in this type of activity" to give gifts to the minors that "they are grooming," Officer Malinak said.

Bryan police discovered that Mr. Barron was a minister when he was asked during questioning what he did for a living, police said. "This is the first person that is this prominent that we've arrested" since undercover stings began in November 2006. Mr. Barron is the 12th man arrested in the stings.

On Thursday, Bryan officers also searched Mr. Barron's Plano home, where they seized a desktop computer, two laptops, numerous computer disks and memory cards, police said.

Prestonwood church staff also gave police officials access to his computer at the church, authorities said. Police did not seize the computer because church officials told police the church had software on the computer that would not allow a person to go into a chat room, Officer Malinak said.

But she said church officials were going to have the computer checked to make sure "there's no inappropriate material" on it, she said.

Bryan police also are looking into whether Mr. Barron may have engaged in previous sexual contact with minors.

"Going through the computer equipment will be very telling," Officer Malinak said.

She said it would be some time before authorities knew what the computers contained.

Mr. Barron does not appear to have a criminal history.

The Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) has in recent years expanded its focus, with attention to abuse by Baptist pastors.

"Baptist officials, we believe, need to compile a thorough, online database of proven, admitted and credibly accused pedophile clergy, so that kids can be protected and parents can be warned," said David Clohessy, SNAP national director.

A work group of the Southern Baptist Convention has been studying the feasibility of such a database and will make a report at the denomination's annual meeting, set for next month in Indianapolis.

Matthew Watkins of the Bryan-College Station Eagle contributed to this report.

What man my age (in his right mind) would want to be involved with a girl that young?

Any child that age that feigns interest in a grandfather has to be screwed up.

You'd think that fact alone would give these middle age crazy, would-be predators a moment of pause.

I mean, would he want to have sex with a profoundly retarded or comatose 13 yr old? Is it all about the flesh regardless if a functioning heart and brain are involved?

I can't picture myself in that absurd scenario.

I cringe as it is when I see some rich old dude with an adult woman his daughter's age on his arm.

He has to be fooling himself.

There is something really fundamentally wrong with the Southern Baptist denomination.

First, they began almost worshipping Bush as their newly-installed fourth member of the Trinity, which I suppose would be renamed the Quadrinity.

I sat through many sermons at the local First Baptist Church calling on us to all but bow before GodBush, the Holy American Flag and the Preemptive War Doctrine for which it stands.

GOP stood for God's Own Party and the preacher left the clear implication that voting for a Democrat was to put one's soul in danger of eternal hellfire.

Finally, I left. God had long ago left that place, I concluded. Why should I keep going out of habit?

As for the particulars of this case, I don't like the entrapment aspect of it, but his making the 200-mile trip to meet the nonexistent 13-year-old IS a criminal act and not merely a chat room fantasy.

As for your blanket condemnation of sex between people of different age groups, I would suppose the Baptists (and especially the FLDS Mormons) would cite you all the countless examples of this in the Old Testament. It is just a biological fact that a man can father children for a much longer span of time than a woman can bear them.

The FLDSers would even contend, as we see in the Eldorado case, that 13-year-olds can "marry," although Baptists and most other "mainstream" churches wouldn't go that far.

I have no problem with old men liking young women, but the key word is women, not girls.

I'm old, and I like em young, but no one under 21 admitted, thank you.

I like em old too. I like em all ages. I am an equal opportunity slut.

I shall not vote for evil, lesser or otherwise.

Agree with the first but re: child brides consider this:

I wouldn't want my 13 yr old daughter's childhood to be abbreviated by some old lech who has the candy to lure her.

Her judgment and values are just what one would expect from a child, and few girls would make the right decisions or be aware of the dangers of exploitation.

If my daughter thought that her suitor's affection was natural, how then could she object when she turns 17 and is then discarded because she's too old (and used up) for him?

If there were no laws to protect young girls they could be bought with DVDs and consumer electronics, cosmetic surgical enhancements (to improve their self esteem at a time when they almost always feel inferior and are unhappy with themselves) and a promise to buy them cars just like Barbie's and Skipper's pink convertible.

If their most value is as breeding stock then of course 13 is a fine age to auction their tight little asses off. They'd have many good child bearing (and firewood hauling) years ahead of them.

But, darn few (at least few of the attractive ones) would ever finish college and become professional anythings. (Strip clubs are filled with young women who were taught that their sex was the most valuable asset they'd ever possess. Too many were taught too young by fathers, uncles and trusted males who were wrongfully allowed inside the family's defenses)

My daughters are just as entitled to grow up first and be fore warned and fore armed against exploitation as my sons. I'd be no more supportive of the idea of my 13 yr old daughter becoming a commodity to old leches than I'd be supportive of giving my sons to NAMBLA for the pleasure of rich old chickenhawks.

To suggest that her ability to have a child should be the criterion used to determine her suitability for emancipation is just too self serving and predatory for me.

I feel real sorry for those guys who just can't get excited about grown women's snappers. But, they'd live a lot longer if they found tight, young sheep that please them than they would trying to lure my daughters away.

"that always happens when one gets caught."

He was crying for himself. A "poor me" ain't exactly the same thing as remorse that springs from knowing someone was about to be exploited by you and the thought hurts because you care about them.

People like this disgust me, and he should not ever be given a leadership role in his faith ever again.

That's what I don't understand yet it seems to be more common than I once thought.

Well, I've offered this theory several times over the years and it never gains any popularity, but here I ago again. (By popularity I mean when I see it as an article in Penthouse, Playboy or ASK MEN.com)

As America collapses under the soul crushing weight of pop culture media, American males are experiencing an epidemic of arrested emotional development.

Specifically, women are reduced to objects of pleasure or scorn, and only in girly films (you know, the tearful psychological dramas that have no machine guns or car chases) are woman portrayed as thinking, feeling humans deserving of empathy. (And even then the message is never specifically tailored for men, but is presented in such a way as to allow already sympathetic suspected metrosexuals like me to watch)

The best example I can give of the disconnected objectification of women is when we see truly disgusting slobs sporting "NO FAT CHIX" bumper stickers on their broken down, rusted out shitboxes. Or, worse, men who offer opinions (on a scale of one to ten) about the charms of passing females when they themselves couldn't get laid in a woman's prison with a handful of pardons.

Many women will look for the inner prince in some truly revolting FRAWGS but, unfortunately few examples of the North American manchild understand what a woman is, never mind what a good woman is. And, fewer still look for the qualities that make for happy relationships, preferring to grade women like beef on the hoof. Then, when their attempts at relationships inevitably fail we see bitter posts about how American women are all fucked up, self absorbed mercenary bitches.

When I see and hear some of my less fortunate brothers complaining I try to explain that the problems may be theirs. More often than not they shut their ears and quickly forget what I tell them because they're simply not emotionally equipped to deal with the truth.

Why? Because emotionally, they never developed beyond the maturity of the average 12 year old.

As luck would have it, they can function as adults in the job market (having been trained in public schools for that purpose) but that required no more training or emotional maturity than that received by 19th century industrial child laborers.

America is paying a terrible price for the consolidation of power over our minds in Hollywood, and further exploited on Madison Ave with the help of the Tavistock Institute, the CIA and other nameless mind control/behavior mod specialists.

(I'll stop here rather than write the whole article)

Summary: Men cannot love themselves or their country or the values that sustained this once great nation if they don't love and respect their women and their children. Real men are defined by their families (or their defense and support for same) not by their Beevis & Butthead roommates and fellow lost souls, adrift in a sea of moral uncertainty. Too often these stunted growth men become enablers and reinforce in each other the very problems that will doom them to lives of confusion, frustration and unhappiness.

I only wish that hard core man haters and those that criticize women who love men would wear lapel pins or bones in their noses or something.

That way, if I see one struggling with a flat tire in a blinding rainstorm, I'll know not to "insult her abilities" by offering to help! ;)

I suspect that in those situations many NOW-type ultra fems become Blanche DuBois with that "I have always depended on the kindness of strangers" jazz, though! ;)

LOL! That works.

Hey gender issues aside I think those who can change a tire should stop and help those who can't. Occasionally this may mean a woman is helping a man.

I came out of class during my college years to discover a flat tire. There were two other girls riding with me. I didn't think a thing of it, just got out the jack and changed the tire. That's why you carry a jack and spare tire right? I did do one thing wrong however. It was the first time I had actually changed one myself so I tried to loosen the lugs after jacking the car up. Not a mistake you will make twice that is for sure and certainly not a major mistake at that.

Still, you changed it, and that's what counts.

My wife and a woman singer from the band we were on the road with got caught in some flooding (I think Memphis maybe) many years ago.

Wifey was driving my pickup and they had to go through a flooded underpass, and when they saw all that high water they responded by crying on each other's shoulders in sheer terror.

The nesting/homing instinct eventually overcame their fear, and Wifey told the other gal that "Jim says you have to keep the engine idle high and drive through slowly" (it was a standard tranny in my pickup). So, she revved it up to about 80,000 rpm and traveling at a snail's pace she drove through the high water, and came on home! :) (and she only burned out about a half a tank of gas!)

That was a high point for all women so, I just thought I'd mention it!
