A few weeks back I took a trip here in Ecuador to a river canyon and had a great opportunity to try out the panoramic feature of my camera. The above is a composite from about 10 different photos, and the original, full size is about 12,000 pixels wide. The image covers about a 270 degree arc. As context, you can see both the sun on the right side and the shadow of a tree near my position on the left.

The river visible below is about 1100 feet lower in altitude than I was. The canyon is about 7000-8000 feet above sea level, and near a village called Isinlivi, several hours south of Quito.

Here's a link to a bigger version that is 720 pixels tall and about 5300 pixels wide. Should fit on most screens without vertical scrolling.

Isinlivi Satellite view

You have to zoom out a bit to see it.

Looks like they farm on the sides of hills there. That's neat, but I would suspect it doesn't work very well with most crops.

Mile-wise, it's really not that far, but in the Andes, "you can't get there from here" is about as true as it gets. Maybe 80 miles as the crow flies but someone on google earth could probably give an accurate figure.

In spite of the distance, it took us about 4 hours of traveling to reach this place. That was 2 separate buses, plus ending the last half hour standing in the back of a pickup as we drove around the winding road to reach this point -- a great ride and views in of itself.

Thanks. It looks like it's closer to 40 miles from Quito, but like I said, "you can't get there from here" as roads and mountains don't mix well. It's well of the main highway that runs N/S through the Ecuador Andes.

Nice scenery!! Reminds me of New Mexico a little bit.

Actually corn is one of the staples here and there is a lot more varieties that grow in the mountains at altitude than grow at sea level. The farmers here will work the sides of hills. The lack of thousands of flat acres is one thing that will keep corporate farming away from Ecuador for a while. At least the mountains. Food has to be grown by hand.

You'll see cattle standing on a 45 degree slope hundreds of feet up from the nearest flat ground too.

Is there a wine industry down there? It seems like every country we've ever visited had it's vineyards going on - even Switzerland. When I asked about that, I was informed that they drank all that they produced and had none to export.

I don't know of any wine makers in Ecuador at all. The only South American wine I know of comes from Argentina and Chile. I think grapes do best in a more moderate climate off the equator.
