Barr campaign to white supremacists: ‘Don’t let the door hit you on the way out’

Monday, June 2, 2008, 04:34 PM

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Libertarian blogs are reporting that Bob Barr is having it out with the same group of white supremacists who sullied Ron Paul’s Republican presidential campaign.

A pair of web sites, including something called Stormfront.org, on Monday ran an endorsement of Barr by James Buchanan:

“A vote for Bob Barr would at least send a message to the Republican Party that conservatives and Whites won’t sit still as they are stuck with a liberal presidential candidate like McCain.”

David Weigel at Reason.com offers this bit of essential background on Libertarian politics, and why that endorsement struck a nerve:

One of the bigger media blunders the Ron Paul campaign made was its handling of endorsements from the bigots at Stormfront. White nationalists slithered around the fringes of the Paul movement, and Paul refused to return a donation from Stormfronter Don Black on the grounds that he’d rather the money be spent on the Paul campaign than spent by racists.

Thirdpartywatch.com reports Barr campaign manager Russ Verney is having none of it. He immediately issued this statement:

”The Barr campaign is not going to be a vehicle for every fringe and hate group to promote itself.

“We do not want and will not accept the support of haters. Tell the haters I said don’t let the door hit you on the backside on your way out!

“Anyone with love in their heart for our country and for every resident of our country regardless of race, religion, nationality or sexual orientation is welcome with open arms.”

I am sorry to see that Bob Barr chose to be a divisive candidate and robotically reject the support of some fine Americans while his campaign regurgitates a ton of PC-like cliches about sexual orientation, race and the color of one's undies. The way the rejection was staged shows lack of class.

There seems to be a systematic effort underway to undermine the effectiveness of party politics. The disgruntled New Yorker who was unhappy at being unable to participate in the Democratic rules meeting is just one more example. Barr seems highly unlikely as a libertarian having voted for the Patriot Act. It seems they could do a lot better. But like the DNC and the GOP, they're not. Honestly speaking I can't quite come to terms with Chuck Baldwin, either. The Constitution Party should be leading the way against the TV evangelists, and I don't think we want people who are tainted by Falwell in charge of the country.

It's sad all the way around, but one positive aspect about it is that people are starting to talk. That's important.

Ron Paul was right to accept a contribution from a group of American citizens. Bob Barr is wrong to reject it.

After all, it's the stupid politicians who should be representing ALL the citizens and it's outrageous that they have the arrogance to refuse representing certain citizens because some of their views disagree with today's PC dogmas.

Ron Paul frequently sets a very high bar. Barr set a low one.

AIPAC is made up of american citizens, as is every other lobbyist group. Money buying loyalty is one of the reasons we are in this mess.

I bet you would be happier in the dem or rep party. They take all the money they can get, and you get the added bonus of voting for the lesser of 2 evils.

Either stand on principle or be a part of the problem. If you lose, then the people get what they deserve.
