Title: Cheney Makes Incest Joke About West Virginians

***UPDATE*** Akers reports that Cheney has now apologized for his West Virginia incest joke:

Vice President Dick Cheney has apologized through his spokeswoman for making an offhand joke during a speech at the National Press Club Monday stereotyping West Virginia as a state prone to incest.

Cheney spokeswoman Lea Anne McBride tells us, "The Vice President's offhand comment was not meant to hurt anyone. On reflection, he concluded that it was an inappropriate attempt at humor that he should not have made. The Vice President apologizes to the people of West Virginia for the inappropriate remark."

Mary Ann Akers of the Washington Post asks if West Virginia was just handed to the Democrats when Dick Cheney made an incest joke at West Virginians' expense:

Cheney was at the Press Club to congratulate this year's winners of the Gerald R. Ford Journalism Prize for Distinguished Reporting on the Presidency. During a question-and-answer session toward the end of the luncheon, someone asked the vice president about his wife Lynne Cheney's revelation on MSNBC last year that "Dick and Barack Obama are eighth cousins."

The questioner jokingly asked the vice president if he and Obama were going to have a family reunion, to which Cheney replied he would "have no objections" though he said he doubted Obama would want one - "certainly not before November."

Then came the offensive punch line. Cheney explained that during the course of researching his family lineage for Lynne's memoir "Blue Skies, No Fences" last year, he learned there were Cheneys on both his father's and his mother's side of the family. There was a Richard Cheney on his mother's side, the vice president said.

"So I had Cheneys on both sides of the family and we don't even live in West Virginia," Cheney quipped.

Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia was not amused:

"That a man who has ascended to the seat of Vice President of the United States would openly display such contempt and astounding ignorance toward his own countrymen is an insult to all Americans. Now that he or the Administration he represents no longer needs their vote, Mr. Cheney apparently feels that he is now free to mock and belittle the people of West Virginia. With his trademark arrogance, the Vice President even added 'You can say those things when you're not running for re-election.'"

"This pitiful comment is not entirely surprising when you consider the source. Vice President Cheney's words reflect the attitude of an administration and a party that says what they must to get elected and then turns their backs on those they promised to represent."

Heh. You can't stand it that a charismatic young upstart with soaring rhetoric and a compelling life story is now the Democrats' candidate of destiny.

McCain is toast, in part because of the selfish, myopic, self serving war criminals of the chimp administration like Snarl here. Sure sucks to be him, dude.

soaring rhetoric

Glad you admit being mesmerized by another human.

Human failing that many never overcome. There is one good thing about being cynical, a person is under no spell or illusions about the BS coming from the mouth of a politician.

You profess to being a self thinker, so take the test yourself on a purely neutral subject, namely poetry. This test is done to show people how gullible they really are.

Attend some poetry reading accomplished by an expert, listen to them, the next day read the same poem to yourself. William L. Shirer explained all of this in great detail in his book, how people are mesmerized and swindled by politicians, preachers and assorted pied pipers.

You are so rattled and irritated by Obama's win you forgot to name the book, The rise and fall of the Third Reich by William L. Shirer. Read it long ago and loved it. You should do that to let anyone lurking know what you talk about.

No, Cyni, I am happy he won, and willing to poke at you a wee bit in a good natured fashion, but being glad the best man won the nomination of the party most likely to win in November is a common human thing. Nothing to get THAT excited over. The ones who need to read the book are those in the thirty or so percent of die hard Bush Bots still clinging to their man, not me.

There is no need to get self-righteous and throw that book at me in any event. I mean, have you seen it? It's huge, if it had hit me here as I wandered peacefully here checking my pings, it would have laid me out cold. Good thing I am young enough to duck. ;-D

Never occurred to me that you had NOT read it.

Surely you recall Shirer attending Hitlers huge rallies and his monumental harangues, with Shirer in amazement at the enthralled masses.

Another non neutral test was done years ago to show the malady that you do suffer from (hehehe). After a Billy graham Saturday night special and his gift of oratory, a pastor took nearly the same sermon for his Sunday service and as usual half the people slept thru it and NO ONE gave him a word of praise as to the sermon.

You have been swindeled Mike, admit it.

"You have been swindled Mike, admit it."

Gore and the American People were swindled in 2000, not me or even Obama here. I made a reasoned choice and will watch the process of Barack Obama make pretzel boy out of McCain and giving the chimp a new bump on the head of his legacy with him.

The process will tell me even more then I know whether Barack Obama is as promising a leader as I suspect he is.

Then I will watch him preform as POTUS. Alas Cyni, I am 54, all the rock star heroes of my youth are dead or old men and women. I don't run anyone up that sort of hero flag pole anymore. Rest assured, that in another few decades, I am sure I'll be as old and cynical as you should I make it that long.

Especially if people like Obama disappoint me as much as other U.S. politicians have. He hasn't yet, but if he does, I will let you know if and when this happens. ;-)

Mike...

If we had three equal branches of the government, I would not vote for any of the three but would live with whatever the majority decides on.

Presidential powers have usurped the other two and that is the downfall of this country. Endless wars, untold deaths and misery, countless trillions of debt, all in violation of the Constitution.

Ron Paul was NOT an orator and it showed, a pragmatic man indeed, colorless and uninspiring with oratory.
