Obama Capitulates

– to the Israel lobby

by Justin Raimondo

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's visit to the U.S. is part of a concerted effort, by the Israeli government and its American lobbyists, to convince U.S. lawmakers – and, most of all, President George W. Bush – that the time to attack Iran is now. The Israeli newspaper Yediot Achronot reports that Olmert will tell Bush "time is running out" on diplomacy and that he'd better launch an attack.

In his speech to the AIPAC conference, Olmert's message was harsh and unrelenting: Iran, he said, "must be stopped by all possible means" from acquiring a nuclear capability. Yes, sanctions must be tightened, but these are only "initial steps": what's needed, he averred, are "more drastic and robust measures" – and that can only mean one thing.

Israel would rather not act alone, but Olmert signaled that he was willing to do so if pushed: ""Israel will not tolerate the possibility of a nuclear Iran, and neither should any other country in the free world," he declared, in what was clearly a threat of unilateral action. Citing Israel's record in regard to Iraq in the eighties and Syria last year, Tim Butcher warned in the Telegraph: "The speech shortens the odds significantly on military action against Iran's nuclear program."

The U.S. would almost certainly be drawn into the conflict if Israel carried out its threat, and Olmert knows that. So does Bush, who, in any case, may not need much persuading. After all, in his speech to the Israeli parliament last month, the President declared:

"Permitting the world's leading sponsor of terror to possess the world's deadliest weapons would be an unforgivable betrayal for future generations. For the sake of peace, the world must not allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon."

For the sake of peace, we must make war: a familiar refrain that echoes down through the years, mocking the living and the dead.

The clock is ticking, and time is running out for the War Party: they must get in their licks before the most pro-Israel president, ever, leaves office. As Butcher writes: "Among Israeli supporters of military action against Iran there is concern something must be done before Mr. Bush's end of office next January as Mr. Bush is perceived as closer to Israel than any potential successor."

Don't look to Barack Obama for deliverance from this looming conflict. In his speech to AIPAC, he clearly signed on to the Lobby's latest project, departing from his prepared text to declare:

"I will do everything in my power to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. Everything in my power. Everything."

"Everything" includes murdering tens of thousands of Iranians, mostly civilians – driving the price of oil up above $300 a barrel and destroying the US economy – and involving us in a war that will make the Iraq conflict look like a Sunday school picnic. And for what?

The irony, of course, is that Iran is nowhere near obtaining nuclear weapons, as the President's own intelligence agencies recently informed him: but no matter. That's a small obstacle to those who disdain "the reality-based community," and see themselves as Making History while the rest of us watch, helpless and aghast. As Ha'aretz recently reported

"Olmert will try to convince Bush to set aside the National Intelligence Estimate on Iran's nuclear program in favor of data presented by Israel, and determine the administration's policy on Iran accordingly."

The coming war with Iran has nothing to do with "weapons of mass destruction" – no more than the invasion of Iraq ever did. It's all about preserving Israeli hegemony in the Middle East by wiping any and all recalcitrant Arab-Muslim states off the map. First Iraq, then Iran – and Syria will have its turn soon enough, along with poor prostrate Lebanon, once the jewel of the eastern Mediterranean and now an economic and political basket case.

It is almost certain we will be at war with Iran before a new President is inaugurated: now that Obama has capitulated to the Lobby, nothing but Divine Providence can stop it.

God help us all.

I have to say I was wrong – dead wrong – about Obama. In my eagerness to find a bright spot in a rapidly darkening world, I grasped on to his alluring rhetoric and his at-times trenchant critique of the Bush foreign policy, like a sinking man holding on to a life-jacket. But looking for hope in all the wrong places doesn't create opportunities for peace – it only prolongs our illusions. We must face the prospect of a much more terrible conflict than we have ever known, and look it squarely in the face, without flinching or looking for false messiahs. I know many of you are disappointed, and some of you are now exclaiming "I told you so!" All that we can do now is hope, and pray, that our country – and the Iranian people – will somehow survive the coming catastrophe.

Raimondo, unlike many of the die-hard Obama supporters on this site, is willing to admit that he was wrong in the face of evidence. What will it take to turn the rest of the "Ron Paul voters for Obama" group around?

I appreciate the fact that Raimondo is not trying to "spin" obama's words like so many of the starry eyed Ophiles have done.

I don't blame people for originally thinking that one candidate or another might be the lesser evil. For a while, Obama seemed preferable to both McCain and Hillary to me as well.

What bothers me about the Obamites on this site is that they either ignore or spin every piece of evidence that ought to have wisened them up to what BHO is all about long ago. Neither Obama's global tax plan, nor his grovelling to AIPAC, nor his collaboration with the crooked Chicago political machine, nor his ties to the lunatic fringe of black activists bothers them at all. They're no different from the Bushbots of the 2000 elections, who, despite all evidence to the contrary, thought that Bush's team would restore decency to the White House and sanity to foreign policy.

there won't be any turning around by most of them unless obama is the anointed puppet and they see for themselves that it will be business as usual.

It took about 7 years to get some of the Bushbots to see that their chimp emperor has no clothes. I'm afraid it might take just as long for the Obamites.

I think that Raimondo has the right idea about the reasons for their self-deception:

In my eagerness to find a bright spot in a rapidly darkening world, I grasped on to his alluring rhetoric and his at-times trenchant critique of the Bush foreign policy, like a sinking man holding on to a life-jacket.

i can understand that, but what is troubling to me is that those of us who did not adopt that point of view have been called brownshirts, closet republicans, mcCain/Hillary supporters/lovers, nazis, racists, compromised, freeper-like, and worse.

Israeli minister says alternatives to attack on Iran running out

An Israeli deputy prime minister on Friday warned that Iran would face attack if it pursues what he said was its nuclear weapons programme.

"If Iran continues its nuclear weapons programme, we will attack it," said Shaul Mofaz, who is also transportation minister.

"Other options are disappearing. The sanctions are not effective. There will be no alternative but to attack Iran in order to stop the Iranian nuclear programme," Mofaz told the Yediot Aharonot daily.

He stressed such an operation could only be conducted with US support.

A former defence minister and armed forces chief of staff, Mofaz hopes to replace embattled Ehud Olmert as prime minister and at the helm of the Kadima party.

I think a lot of that has been invited on by the more verbally abusive on this forum who insinuate that the Obama sympathizers are traitors, or worse. Note the use of the term "sympathizer" meaning not necessarily committed to voting for him, but merely perceiving him as possibly not as bad as McCain/Hillary.

There is one poster here in particular, who while he touts Baldwin as his candidate is really rather deserving of the treatment that you are mentioning, given his own treatment of others. I, like Raimondo, have been a sympathetic skeptic regarding Obama (and I renounced the idea of voting for him some time ago). I can see both sides of this. Only a VERY few here actually deserve the treatment that you are mentioning, but they do nonetheless because they haven't engaged in civil discourse and essentially have been assholes.

That was me in 2000. It was hard to get off the Kool-Aide, but I somehow managed. I don't regret my NC Primary vote for Ron Paul for one second. Not one second. And I'll do it again in November- which ever candidate is best in line with the Constitution and the Founders is who I'll vote for.

With our nation is being lost to global socialism, it's past time to be abusive to those who support it. There is no in between in the coming battle.

I think there has been misjudgment regarding the motives and politics of some of the posters. You have to know that any illusions they have about Obama will disappear soon enough. Maybe even before the election.

If the goal is to drive dissenters off the forum then there seems to be some success. If the goal is to enlighten and convince then another approach needs to be adopted.

If the goal is to enlighten and convince then another approach needs to be adopted.

Reading history one finds that nearly all of the major socialist movements in the past have not been due to enlightenment, rather the socialists have crushed those that dare dissent.

Convincing anyone about politics is akin to changing their view of religion, it does not work.

The days of convincing are long gone, just as government reform is a myth held only by idealists.

This country was born in blood by Revolution of a small minority of people that were not willing to go along. We profited by it and now we have lost it.

Enlighten and convince posters? These folks have stood with us at tFR, LP, FU and here. And I should play nice w/people who know EXACTLY what they're buying? Eff em. They get the same medicine a FReeper would get. And BTW, they've scampered off to have a more pleasant experience (read, don't bother me with the obvious). No, the game is too close to the end to enlighten and convince the posters who refuse to debate. There aren't any Justin Raimondo's among them.

Thanks, PnbC. My goal/strategy is the same as it's been for years; to expose professional politicians as frauds when deserved. You and I know the clinical definition of insanity, and by expecting a politician to get us out of the mess they created is a perfect working example. Take away Obama's black, and you have red. Our friends in the collective know this full well.
