ELMONT, N.Y. -- Big Brown's bid for a Triple Crown might be getting a little easier.

Casino Drive, considered the primary challenger to Big Brown's Triple bid, has a bruised hoof, but still is expected to run in Saturday's Belmont Stakes.

The lightly-raced Japanese-based colt skipped his morning gallop today when his connections noticed he was walking oddly after leaving the barn at about 5 a.m.

A bruise -- perhaps from stepping on a stone -- was discovered on the bottom of his left hind hoof, said Nobutaka Tada, the racing manager for Casino Drive's owners.

Tada said Casino Drive was examined by a track vet and no further issues were discovered. "It's a setback," said Casino Drive jockey Edgar Prado, who had not heard about the horse's health issue when questioned at about noon.

Tada said the winner of the Grade II Peter Pan Stakes would be evaluated later today. Tada said there is no plan to scratch the colt from the Belmont, the final leg of the Triple Crown.

"There is nothing to stop us (from racing) at the moment," Tada said. "As long as he's going like this, there is no reason to stop him."

The undefeated 3-year-old will receive hot and colt treatment on the hoof, Tada said. Any decision on a possible scratch will be made based on his progress in the next 24 hours.

"It all depends on how he moves tomorrow," Tada said.

Casino Drive is 7-2 in the morning line and the other horse with odds of less than 10-1 in Big Brown's goal to become the first Triple Crown winner in 30 years. Meanwhile, Big Brown, the 2-5 favorite after winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, will have his cracked left front hoof patched.

Hoof specialist Ian McKinlay, who will perform the 45-minute procedure, guaranteed the quarter crack will not be an issue in Big Brown's bid to win the Belmont.

"Yeah, I will guarantee that," he said. "There's really not anything that can go wrong at this point."

It's interesting that both Big Brown (last week) and now Casino Drive suffered injuries to their hooves during practice. I hope both horses are healthy enough to give their best tomorrow at the Belmont Stakes. It should be exciting!

Who was it a goodly number of years ago, Spectacular Bid maybe, that stepped on a safety pin (like a saddle blanket pin or some such), and lost the Belmont-- seems like it was close, but a loss, nonetheless.

I'm not saying that Casino Drive is a Spectacular Bid by any stretch--I don't even think BB is in the same class as The Bid.

Oh well.......neither are my choice(s) for tomorrow.

1/4,7,10/4,7,10 is my trifecta. When I read about Casino Drive's problems today, I took him out of my exotics. It could be a ploy or gaming but I don't think so.

I find the way they train their horses interesting..........all the long walking and stuff..........timewise. As noted somewhere, here our horses are essentially kept in their stalls except to work out on the track or be washed or hand fed a few minutes.

I think they'll run Casino.......

Did you see where War Emblem has finally been convinced that BREEDING is good and fun? LOL....after all this time! They have him breeding l or 2 mares a day all the time. Good article at Bloodhorse magazine......New Bolton was among those who worked on the 'problem'....

If these babies turn out as good, proportionately as the small handful of actual babies already are, then he will be a force to contend with as a sire. He was certainly an eye catcher, and could run, too.

I've got about twenty or so bets to run up to the track tomorrow, for me and my fellow racing friends. Then I'll come home to the tavern where the brews are cheap and watch all my winners come in.

Someone gave me a tip today. The #5 horse in the first race at Churchill Downs. I'll come back and brag here if he wins - it is a race for two-year olds - you know how those go - anything can happen.

Good luck with all da bets....

Used to enjoy going to the races in so- cal....Del Mar was a beautiful track. I even liked Los Alamitos........Tbreds and Q horses. They had a nice club house; we'd go for dinner with a group of friends; knew the general manager; I loved to watch the babies race---they'd hold the mommas at end end of the straight away and the babies at the other end......and then turn the babies loose. Some of them could really put a move on to get to their momma!

Shucks, I even enjoyed going to the county fair faces up in Montana. Our vet had some tbreds.

Good luck with all da bets....

I do this once a month or so; it is an adrenalin rush to me.

We watch TVG (horse racing) at the tavern. Every once in a while we'll throw down a quarter on a horse in a race. We're like teenagers who never grew up.

I used to get TVG, but my state wouldn't let us go the betting routine; otherwise, I'm sure I'd pay a lot more attention to racing again and place a bet or two myself.
