That parallels my thought before I even read your comment. Any place that allows the peons to piss in the field and crap between the rows is a place waiting to export disease. There is no human fecal matter on my 'maters, and I ain't hirin' Mexicans to pick'em.

Years ago I went over to South Joysee to service some water treatment equipment and I ended up on a farm working in a migrant shack. I was ashamed to see how poorly maintained the place was. The American owners of that farm apparently held the workers in very low esteem, and the workers were apparently in no position to object to the conditions. The veggies from NJ are very popular and tasty. But, most are harvested by you-know-whats, and that means that there will always be a chance of a biological warfare sneak attack. We grow most of our on maters and other veggies during the season but in winter we've bought some. Maybe we'll start freezing and canning more and stop rolling the dice.
There are lots of great gardening minds here at 4um...one of the reasons I like it so much. Perhaps it is a time for a 'survival gardening' ping list, or some such? A place to gather all those concepts and ideas?

Great idea, and some members have some great recipes that even a "bachelor who doesn't cook" could prepare, and, I love to see those posted. "Pour one cup of milk into medium skillet and bring to a boil. Add one cup of hastily chopped tomatoes and simmer for ten minutes while channel surfing for something to watch while eating. Serve over toast with cold beer." Mmm, mmm, good!
