MSNBC anchor Andrea Mitchell issued an on-air apology Monday following a remark last week in which she referred to an area of southwestern Virginia as “redneck, sort of bordering-on-Appalachia country.” Mitchell last Thursday was discussing a campaign stop by Barack Obama alongside popular former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner — a current U.S. Senate candidate — when she began describing the territory where Obama’s campaign trail led him that day: Bristol, Va. “Interesting images today: Barack Obama, Mark Warner in southwest Virginia. This is real redneck, sort of bordering-on-Appalachia country. This is not the Northern Virginia, you know, sort of high-tech corridor, and these are voters that he would not logically be, you know, gravitating to. This is the beginning of a pivot,” Mitchell said, speaking on-air last Thursday with NBC political director Chuck Todd. Click here to see the video clip on YouTube. The local newspaper, the Bristol Herald Courier, seethed: “To correct Mitchell, Bristol doesn’t border ‘Appalachia … country.’ It is part of the Appalachian Mountain region. While the region faces challenges, it doesn’t deserve to be the butt of jokes.” On Monday, Mitchell issued an apology. “I owe and apology to the good people of Bristol, Virginia, for something stupid that I said last week. I was trying to explain based on reporting from Democratic strategists why Barack Obama was campaigning in southwest Virginia. But without attribution or explanation, I used a term strategists often use to demean an entire community,” Mitchell said.

Golly gee - if the adl had been able to force anti-1st amendment legislation thru Congress, dear Andrea Mitchell ( wife of Greenspan ) would be guilty of "hate speech."
Andrea Mitchell should be FORCED to live in the woods of WV all summer with no deet-spray and eat rabbits/possum-stew/collard greens.
This gives a nice hint of what the Mediarati think of the inhabitants of Flyover Country. Condescension towards America is one of the hallmarks of the BiCoastal media types.
Southwest Virginia is one of the prettiest and peaceful spots you can find on the east coast...Mrs. Greenspan is an elitist idiot.
Another point, Mrs. Greenspan...southwest Virginia is a DEMOCRAT stronghold...DEMOCRAT Congressman Rick Boucher has been re-elected so many times there I have lost count. What an ass.
Just imagine if Mitchell had referred to Laredo, TX or Nogales, AZ as "wetback, bordering-on-Mexico country." She'd have to do more than apologize to have any hope of keeping her job.
It has always been open season for the the elite to demean red necks, hill billies, white trash, on and on. That is fine with me, I fit all of the above, but I find it difficult to accept that it is nearly a crime to call her husband a kike. To do that is a hate crime, but those small towners and hicks, not a problem.
Almost Heaven, SW Virginia. You're correct, stunningly beautiful, not in the grand sense like the Rockies but like butter!
It is the city elite slicks that live in the human sewer.
