TSA's new policelike badges a sore point with real cops

By Dennis Drenner for USA TODAY

Transportation Security Officer Derrick Ward sports a new policelike uniform and badge as he screens passengers in Baltimore. Screeners will receive the new uniforms throughout the year, as the Transportation Security Administration aims to professionalize its workforce.

By Thomas Frank, USA TODAY WASHINGTON — Screeners at the nation's airport checkpoints are going to start wearing police-style badges — but real officers aren't too happy about it. Some sworn officers fear airline passengers will mistake screeners for law-enforcement officials with arrest powers.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is starting to equip its 48,000 screeners with 3-inch-by-2-inch, silver-colored, copper and zinc badges that will be worn on new royal-blue police-style shirts.

The attire aims to convey an image of authority to passengers, who have harassed, pushed and in a few instances punched screeners. "Some of our officers aren't respected," TSA spokeswoman Ellen Howe said.

Actual airport police, who carry guns and have arrest powers, worry that their own authority will be undercut by screeners who look like police. Every major airport has its own police department or is patrolled by local police.

Any guesses on how long it will be before they're issued Tasers?

If they are classified as security officers, they probably do have police powers in that airport.

I used to work as a guard, and I had police authority where I worked. But this may vary by state, I dont know.

Invest in wool. It's going to take yards and yards of wool to make the uniforms of some of the oinkers I see doing this work.

The only place I see the oinkers is when delivering or collecting folks at the airport. I won't fly until, and unless, things change.

It's a beautiful country. Except for Detroit, and anything within 50 miles of NYC and certain LA area cities. I'd rather drive and see it, than fly over it.

The airlines can turn their planes into giant dildos and fly them right up their collective you-know-whats for all I care.

Jealousy is so ugly. Real LEO's just WISH they could push people around like the TSA goons get to do, and with full gov't sanctioning to boot.
