Obama Eyes a Running Mate Who Confers With McCain General James Jones Is Known Equally for Diplomatic Skills, Military Acumen By RUSSELL BERMAN, Staff Reporter of the Sun June 19, 2008 WASHINGTON — When the advisers tapped by Senator Obama to find a vice president met with lawmakers on Capitol Hill, one name that leaked out was that of a former NATO commander, General James Jones. But yesterday, as the presumptive Democratic nominee held briefings in Washington with dozens of military and foreign policy advisers, General Jones was not there. Instead, he was in Missouri, sitting on an energy security panel convened by Mr. Obama's Republican rival, Senator McCain, who praised him as "a great friend and a great patriot." That General Jones would be mentioned as a potential running mate for one party nominee and participating in a campaign event of the other befits the reputation forged by a man known equally for his diplomatic skills and his military acumen, foreign policy analysts said yesterday. "I had no idea whether he was a Democrat or a Republican. All I know is he was respected on both sides," a former Pentagon colleague of General Jones's who now heads the Center for a New American Security, Kurt Campbell, said in an interview. -Snip

(BA.N: Quote, Profile , Research) on Tuesday named retired Marine Corps Gen. James Jones, the former head of U.S. and NATO forces in Europe, to its board. The appointment is the latest in a line of retired senior armed forces and Pentagon leaders joining defense contractors, underscoring the tight relationship between U.S. arms makers and buyers. Boeing, which is the No. 2 U.S. defense contractor behind Lockheed Martin Corp. (LMT.N: Quote, Profile , Research), said Jones' appointment was effective immediately. Jones, 63, is a decorated Vietnam War veteran with a 40-year military career. After leading the U.S. Marine Corps from 1999 to 2003, he was the supreme allied commander Europe and commander of the United States European Command until 2006. He retired from the Marines last year. He is now president and chief executive of the Institute for 21st Century Energy, an affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Boeing, which last year settled two Department of Justice probes into its procurement practices, and is now facing questions over aircraft emissions, said Jones would be helpful on both military and environmental issues. Jones "has an in-depth understanding of military and global affairs," Boeing CEO Jim McNerney said in a statement. "As a result of the work he is doing for the institute, he also is knowledgeable about the energy and climate-change issues that are so important to the future of all of us." Jones is the only former military leader on Boeing's board, which now has 11 members. Boeing's main rivals already have former high-ranking servicemen and Pentagon officials on their board. In 2006, Northrop Grumman Corp. (NOC.N: Quote, Profile , Research) appointed retired Air Force Gen. Richard Myers, former chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, to its board. The U.S. No. 3 defense contractor has had retired U.S. Navy Admiral Charles Larson on its board since 2002. Lockheed's board boasts former under-secretary of Defense, E.C. "Pete" Aldridge.
I guess he needs someone w/military experience to continue to play Globocop in Afghanistan.
I still recall Eisenhowers farewell speech and was stunned at his comment about MIC. Having worked for Martin Acft during Ikes tenure I was aware of what he was speaking about. Martin did DOD work for all branches, fixed cost contracts and cost plus ten per cent contracts. On Saturdays we would be called in for overtime to work on "fixed" costs and the charge would be placed against the cost plus. There was a resident DOD person but we never saw him and business went on as usual.
I recently asked a dedicated Obama dude about his thoughts regarding Os desire to wage peace. We agreed that the MIC did a trillion-dollar a year business, and any threat to that type of income flow wouldn't be taken lightly (see JFKs exploding head - 11/22/63). I think he laughed and I can't recall a specific answer.

Cult of the personality, indeed. When I look at the current Obama mania, I can't help to think of this quote from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Energy with no direction or application. Doomed to failure then and now.

Have a barf bag ready is right! Hard to imagine that many deluded people on one video in three minutes (just watched the first one so far, We Are The Ones). Sure did hate to see Jessica Alba in that bunch of morons but I guess she has been brainwashed too. edit: I was thinking there were links to four videos but I guess it was just the one. That was enough anyway. One sickening video like that is plenty for one day. Now I can puke my guts out and lose weight.
