Title: Question about uploading video. Any experts?

Ok, I'm a novice at computer tech and video stuff and have a few simple questions. I have some videos on dvd disk and want to upload them to my computer, and then to windows movie maker, and then to the internet via youtube. I originally put these vids on dvd disk via my DVD RECORDER. some of the footage originated from VHS tapes, and others originated from my videocam. When i put the contents of the dvd on my computer they show as 2 folders: VIDEO_RM and VIDEO_TS. I can watch the vids on my computer but 'm having a hard time isolating the actual video to save to my computer. I believe the vids themselves are in the VIDEO_TS folder, but everytime I try to save them or upload to windows movie maker, my windows movie maker freezes up. One idiot offered me the suggestion to 'just upload them directly using a cable from your videeocam to the computer!' There are several problems with that 'answer', the primary being that it completely avoids the problem i presented. I dont want to upload anything from my videocam. because the footage is not ON my videocam. IT IS ON A DVD. If i wanted to upload something directly from my videocam, i can do that. Furthermore, among the billions of youtube videos from news footage and tv programs, etc, how does the footage originally get put on youtube? does the person use a digital source,? They probably don't use a VHS recording of it? Does anyone know the answer to this question? Thanks in advance. I have some great footage i need to put up and any help is appreciated. Meanwhile here is something I do know how to do, upload photos. here is a funny picture of my dog and a cow staring each other down in Houston TX last week. ;-D

You seem to have the slideshow thing going on very well, so I'm betting that someone will come up with movie-maker info that is needed.
I've uploaded them from wmv files and .flv files. It seems to me that youtube converts all files to .flv after you upload them, no matter what format you upload, since .flv is the format I was able to download them from youtube. Perhaps use a dvd ripping program to pull out clips you want, like www.dvd-ripper.com/ or something similar (free licensed) from downloads.com. Use it to pull out the clips you want, save them in a video format, and upload them. But I tell you, when I did it, the video and audio did not synch well and I had to use another program to get it right. But this was some time ago, and that problem might not exist anymore with better software.
yeah, the slideshow, with music, and isolating audio files etc , i got figured out. (I make those with windows movie maker also, by the way). it's just the video i need to work on. im sure its easy, just a matter of learning exactly how to do it. thanks

I suppose i shouldnt have even mentioned youtube since the only problem i face is getting the video files uploaded to windows movie maker., in order to to start editing. (after that is done i can post it on youtube easily.) thanks

I'm no expert, but I've played with video for a few years. Does the Video_ts folder have file extensions such as .BUP .IFO .VOB?
when i open the folder it says it is 2.30GB. my computer is always very extrenely fast but whenever i try to look at this one it freezes everything up and slows everything to a standstill. right now its not responding when i say to open the TS folder. but earlier i did, and yes i think i remember there beinf the BUP, IFO and VOB files, . arent the VOB files the ones i want, which ahve the actual video on them? I tried saving the vob but still, my windows moviemaker freezes up when i tried to import the VOb to the windows movie maker story board,. thanks.

Whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ. Whoever denies the Father and the Son, this is the antichrist." Free version of MovieMaker won't accept VOBs, and yes, both video and audio are in the VOBs. Only Vista premium and ultimate versions accept MPEG2 streams. I'm trying to think of the easiest way for you to put your vids into another container.
Go to www.doom9.org, then to the "Download" page, then the "full software" page. Get the codec Huffyuv 2.1 and install it. Then go get VirtualDubMod here: http://virtualdubmod.sourceforge.net/ You should be able to open the VOB's with VirtualDubMod and save it in an AVI container using the Huffyuv codec. It might be that if one of the vids is longer than ~30 minutes it will be split over 2 VOB's. That would need to be handled differently.

Whoever denies the Father and the Son, this is the antichrist." i downloaded virtualdubmode and when i click on it, i see a long list of folders that includes a list of 21 things. so how do i ''open'' a VOB with a list of 21 things? i don't get it., i must be missing somethin.

To open a VOB, you start VirtualDubMod, click on "File" in the Menu bar, then navigate to where the VOB's are located. Double-click on the one that you want to open. In a few seconds, the program will "parse" the file and the video should show in both screens. If you go to "File > File Information" it will give you information about the VOB. I've searched for a tutorial for VirtualDubMod but only found ones for VirtualDub (VirtualDubMod is a modified "unofficial" version of VirtualDub). Things are similar. Latest VirtuaDub is incorporating some things that are in VirtualDubMod and VirtualDub-MPEG2. There are similarities between VirtualDubMod and VirtualDub-MPEG2. I have all three plus VirtualDub-asf. All are built upon the original code of VirtualDub, now at version 1.81. So, I wish it were easier than all this, but it isn't for free stuff. Actually, most of this free stuff is better than what you can buy for less than a few thousand dollars: Non-Linear Editor: this is what VirtualDub is in all it's various offshoots. With all the "plugins" for it, and with the use of the frameserver Avisynth, this is more than a bargain. Avisynth and it's plugins simply doesn't exist in the commercial world. Avisynth: a frameserver that can use scripts and plugins to do some rather fantastic things with video, for free. Nothing like it is available commercially. Several sites that can be helpful: forum.doom9.org - If you join, it takes 5 days before you can post. Why? To make you use the Search function for commonly asked beginner questions. Many members are professionals in the video field. www.videohelp.com - I'm not a member. General answers to beginner questions. forums.virtualdub.org - Questions reguarding VirtualDub, bug reports, etc, but not generally about any of the varients.
I should add: I'll give you a "leg up" if I can on this. But MS MovieMaker is, from all that I've read, rather terrible, ie, too simplistic. Making a YouTube vid that looks good is more involved than putting video and audio into MovieMaker and uploading it. There is a procedure to make "decent" YouTube vids, and it isn't terribly complicated once you understand what you're doing. When I first started about 3 years ago, I had little idea as to what I was doing. After one year, I thought that I got the general gist of it. After two years, I knew that I knew only a smidgin. I'm now 3 years in to this and I'm sorta comfortable with handling various "situations" with video. Have heart :)
From what I've been able to gather WRT posting a vid on YouTube: This is for Windows users, mostly. Make your video size 320x240 Make the audio samplerate 22050 and convert to MP3 Mux them together and use FFDSHOW to make the .flv file (Get the "ffdshow_beta3_rev1324_20070701_clsid.exe") Upload your vid. Why make your own .flv? By doing so you can be certain that your file isn't re-encoded and degraded by YouTube. One other thing: Check that the combinded bitrate of your vid is under 350Kbps. THATS LESS THAN 350 KILOBITS/SEC. If it is equal to or greater than that it will be re-encoded. To be certain that your vid is <350Kbps get MediaInfo and open you .flv and examine the video and audio bitrates. That's the best that I can do at the moment.

Hey rack sorry bout that, i just got back online, didn't mean to ignore you. I went to the links you gave an actually had downloaded VIRTUALDUBMOD. it froze up the computer, then i went and did some searching, and a microsoft employee who runs a forum on WMM said it did the same thing for his computer. Then i went and saw a step-by step deal on how to use VIRTUALDUBMOD and it listed, about 21 steps. Given the fact that whatever it is always freezes up people computers and i couldnt use it, i removed it and just sent the vid to a friend of mine who will convert the VOB and upload it. I appreciate your help but i just dont have the knowledge, interest or time investment thats necessary to learn all that. wasn't tryin' to be rude. we had a 911 event today so i was gone most all of friday and sat.
