A Gwinnett County man is wanted for allegedly killing his 4-year-old daughter, hiding her in the attic and fleeing to Mexico with the rest of his family. Police believe suspect Christian Vasquez, 23, is still in Mexico with his wife, Amy Yesemia Ruiz, and her older child from a previous relationship, Gwinnett police spokesman Corp. David Schiralli said. Investigators haven't said how Prisi Vasquez, 4, died.
Police believe Prisi was killed before the family fled to Mexico in April 2007.
Acting on a tip from a family friend, Gwinnett County police found the body Friday in the attic at the home on the 700 block of Stillwater Lane in the Lawrenceville area.
The current resident of the home, a man who is not affiliated with the family, was unaware of the child's body, which went undiscovered for more than a year.
The man said he had noticed a foul odor, but thought it was coming from the garbage disposal or sewer pipes, police said.
The child's mother had told a family friend that the child died of natural causes but that her husband panicked and hid her in the attic. That friend then tipped off police.
An autopsy showed the cause of death as homicide, Schiralli said.
Investigators have an arrest warrant charging the father with murder, but, first, U.S. officials have to find him and convince Mexican officials to return him to the United States for prosecution.
So far, no charges have been filed against the mother.
