Want a reason for war with Iraq? Here are 21. A study by Devon Largio, a recent graduate of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, reveals that between September 2001 and October 2002 10 key players in the debate over Iraq presented at least 21 rationales for going to war. Largio examines the public statements of President George W. Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle, Sens. Joseph Lieberman and John McCain, Richard Perle (then chairman of the Defense Policy Review Board), Secretary of State Colin Powell, National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, and Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz.

Poster Comment:

Here is a list of 21 different rationales given between 9/01 to 10/02 by leading figures in Congress and in the Administration for going to war in Iraq. While it does not constitute a list of "lies", it gives an interesting look into the excuses fed to the public by our leaders. Note John McCain's multiple rationales and Democratic leaders' rationales. One question begs to be asked: Why didn't anyone state the obvious --> OIL? It's not necessarily the oil in the ground in Iraq per se, but the oil that is underneath the Middle East region in general that is of concern. The leading figures of the Council on Foreign Relations stated publicly in the 1990s that the most important area strategically in the entire world is the swath of territory from Israel to Pakistan. This is because 65% of the world's oil and natural gas reserves exists underneath Central and South central Asia. America needs cheap energy and our trustworthy Establishment is getting ever more desperate and fearful that the markets will not tilt the scale in our favor in the not-so-distant foreseeable future. Their hunger for war as the only solution has now guaranteed that market forces will not be favorable in the future. (1 image)

Why didn't anyone state the obvious ...OIL? It's not necessarily the oil in the ground in Iraq per se, but the oil that is underneath the Middle East region in general that is of concern.

Oil did not motivate warmongers like Lieberman, Perle, Wolfowitz and Feith.

A few days ago Joe Klein of Time magazine stated that the primary motivating factor for the neocons re: the Iraq Invasion was so Israel could be made safe - Iraq would be the first piece of the Clean Break paper domino effect.

Klein's truthfulness has caused great consternation among the Usual Suspects.

Kudos to Philip Weiss for bringing this "scandal" to light.

1. Klein stands his ground in the face of Usual Suspects' outrage:

www.philipweiss.org/mondo...te-edges-into-the-center- ring.html

...You want evidence of divided loyalties? How about the "benign domino theory" that so many Jewish neoconservatives talked to me about--off the record, of course--in the runup to the Iraq war, the idea that Israel's security could be won by taking out Saddam, which would set off a cascade of disaster for Israel's enemies in the region? As my grandmother would say, feh! Do you actually deny that the casus belli that dare not speak its name wasn't, as I wrote in February 2003, a desire to make the world safe for Israel? Why the rush now to bomb Iran, a country that poses some threat to Israel but none--for the moment--to the United States...unless we go ahead, attack it, and the mullahs unleash Hezbollah terrorists against us? Do you really believe the mullahs would stage a nuclear attack on Israel, destroying the third most holy site in Islam and killing untold numbers of Muslims?...

2. Klein's original statements that got him into hot water:

www.time- blog.com/swampla.../06/surge_protection.html

...The notion that we could just waltz in and inject democracy into an extremely complicated, devout and ancient culture smacked--still smacks--of neocolonialist legerdemain. The fact that a great many Jewish neoconservatives--people like Joe Lieberman and the crowd over at Commentary--plumped for this war, and now for an even more foolish assault on Iran, raised the question of divided loyalties: using U.S. military power, U.S. lives and money, to make the world safe for Israel...

Most of these "reasons" are just variations on the "they hate us for our freedom" crap that the Bush administration and the neocons have been repeating non-stop for the past 8 years.
