"Spin-orbit coupling" to blame; effects could last decades.

A new paper published by the Astronomical Society of Australia is warning of upcoming global cooling due to lessened solar activity. The study, written by three Australian researchers, has identified what is known as a "spin-orbit coupling" affecting the rotation rate of the sun. That rotation, in turn, is linked to the intensity of the solar cycle and climate changes here on Earth.

The study's lead author, Ian Wilson, explains further, "[The paper] supports the contention that the level of activity on the Sun will significantly diminish sometime in the next decade and remain low for about 20 - 30 years."

According to Wilson, the result is a strong, rapid pulse of global cooling, "On each occasion that the Sun has done this in the past the World’s mean temperature has dropped by ~ 1 - 2 C."

A 2 C drop would be twice as large as all the warming the earth has experienced since the start of the industrial era, and would be significant enough to impact global agriculture output.

Earlier this year, astronomers from around the world noted solar activity was suspiciously low; some began predicting global cooling at that time. Since then, activity has remained far below average, with it now being over two months since a single sunspot has appeared on the surface of the sun.

In May, a team of German climatologists published research stating that, due to "natural effects", global warming would halt for up to 15 years.

The new paper appears in the June issue of PASA, Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia.

Think Down Coat.

However, the Global Warming scare has been so thoroughly sold that there will still be people who insist we are experiencing Global Warming with an overall decline in Global temperatures.

Such are the discussions I'm having on other forums. I think past climates are the key though I believe there are problems with climate proxies. The last time the sun was like this we had cooling. Stands to reason we will see cooling again.

If it gets cold enough, they will change their toon. It may be a short cooling of a couple to several decades, a little ice age of 200 years, or a full blown Ice Age lasting 100 centuries. The later would destroy the USA as we know it and reduce the world's population by half or perhaps much more.

The good news is that a lot of them are "upside down" on their homes and have to stay put.

I'm warning them also. There is really no "welfare" to speak of in Texas. Sure, you can go to the ER for treatment. But that's about it.

The last time this happened in the early 1980s, we had a joke comparing Yankees to hemorrhoids. They come down and won't go back up.

By the mid-80s, Texas' energy-based economy had collapsed and the rest of the country was on the way up. So that's another reason to stay put. Our Texas economy is like Texas weather--if you don't like it, just wait a day or two. It'll change. The economy will fall apart again here, within a few years. And then the Yankees will be stuck here in an alien culture where no one does things "the way we did things back home."

A new paper published by the Astronomical Society of Australia is warning of upcoming global cooling due to lessened solar activity.

This is typical alarmist bullshit written by those who should know better, and more than likely do.

There have been articles floating around recently with dire predictions on "global cooling" since there are few sunspots occuring right now. Any scientist who can honestly refer to him or herself as such should know that we are currently in the minimum swing of the new solar cycle, where activity is about to pick up in a month or so.

Here's a graph of solar activity dating back to the year 2000. The graph starts at the peak of the former solar cycle and goes up to the year 2016, which is towards the end of the current cycle which began in January of this year. The current cycle is not expected to peak until 2012, and is thought to more than likely be a VERY active cycle. We ARE however at the minimum point of activity in the new cycle, where there are still sunspots occuring from the prior cycle. A new cycle is determined by the appearance of sunspots of the opposite polarity from that of the former cycle. The first sunspot of the new cycle, cycle 24, appeared on January 4th of this year.

There are two expected activity curves in red, one being the minimum activity, the other the maximum.

Here's a couple of graphs showing solar activity back to 1760. As you can see, there is nothing unique or unusual with our current point in the solar cycle.

One has to wonder why scientists who should know better are publishing such utter crapola.

However, the Global Warming scare has been so thoroughly sold that there will still be people who insist we are experiencing Global Warming with an overall decline in Global temperatures.

Those same people understand very little about how the greenhouse gas CO2 actually warms the Earth. It does it in two narrow bands, one of which is insignificant because very little IR radiation form Earth is radiated in that band, the other one is already mostly covered by water vapor now. Water vapor is the number one greenhouse gas by far on Earth. If runaway greenhouse gasses were possible on Earth then it would have already occurred by now. The Earth does not have a relatively static atmosphere like Venus has, its constant winds at the jet stream level ensure that most heat from Earth leaves through convection. The Global warming scam never was about concern for the Earth and its people, but rather a way to control people and reduce population.

Did you notice the graph on the source page of your article, and the caption below it? It states "A 2005 prediction of solar activity. The sunspot number should now stand close to 100, instead it is zero."

It is obvious that whoever wrote that is hoping that his readers all just swallow whatever is handed them as gospel. Solar cycle 23 did NOT end in 2004 and solar activity did NOT drop to its minimum in 2006, it occured THIS year instead.

The last cycle, cycle 23, lasted several years longer than shown in this graph. The authors should have known that.

Again, here's an actual graph showing actual solar activity up to the end of May 2008.

Those same people understand very little about how the greenhouse gas CO2 actually warms the Earth.

And people like you are among those that falsely report solar activity and lie about what is really happening, for whatever agenda you serve.

Some people, when presented with actual facts, modify their postition and understand that they may have been led to believe something contrary to what is true. You are not one of those people, in fact you'll simply post your own opinion as if it were scientific fact, with nothing but hot air to back up your arguments.

... Record cold high temperature in Springfield Illinois on July 3...

The high temperature in Springfield yesterday was only 69 degrees. This is the coldest high temperature on record for July 3. The old record of 70 degrees was set in 1892.

The normal high temperature for the date is 86 degrees.

69 for a high in July despite all that extra CO2 in the atmosphere? Could the global warming scientists be wrong? I think so.

The situation with sunspots from July 2007 to June 2008.

The cycle 23 that began already in 1996 still reigns superior. There was no cycle 24 spots in June.

From cycle 24 there are three tiny signatures: one in January (1 day), one in April (2 days) and one in May (2 days).

In 2008 there has been 16 groups from cycle 23 lasting together 91 days, and 3 groups from cycle 24 lasting together 5 days.

From July 2007 to December 2007

-------------------------------------------------------------------

June 2008
spotless days 19
one sunspot group from cycle 23 (SH) on 4 days (10.-13.5.) msize 40
one sunspot group from cycle 23 (SH) on 7 days (16.-22.5.) msize 20
no sunpot groups from cycle 24
sunspot number 3.1

-------------------------------------------------------------------

The 12-monthly best fit gives around the year 1797. The Dalton minimum reigned 1798-1823. It's anybody's guess what happens next. At least the Earth is already cooling.
Sunspot number from Jan to June = 3, 2, 9, 3, 3, 3 = 23.7 = 22.55(from 23) + 1.15(from 24).
Spotless days Jan to June = 20, 21, 16, 20, 23, 19 = 65%.
Can Sun continue this way for long? Yes, it can. The lack of cycle 24 spots, the almost ghost-like 23-spot in 16.-22.6. really had only one spot, and at the same time radio flux of 10.7 cm was amazing 65. What is lacking? Wholly spotless months. Whatever perspective one has, my educated guess is that either July or August will be wholly spotless. Almost all solar parameters are so low, that at least it would not be surprising.

Since then, activity has remained far below average, with it now being over two months since a single sunspot has appeared on the surface of the sun.

The above quote from the article is an absolute lie. Below is the number of sunspots per day up through the end of June 2008. Apparently the author doesn't count very well, or doesn't know where to look up sunspot data.

Note: The values at the bottom row of the table below indicate the average number of sunspots per day for that month. One person here had to tried to say those were the actual number of sunspots for the month, where it is quite obvious that is not the case.

You're quite good at posting meaningless gobblygook in an attempt to confuse the subject. There have been MANY more than just one sunspot this year, unlike what you were trying to say on another thread.

If runaway greenhouse gasses were possible on Earth then it would have already occurred by now.

Really? That's not what physicists and various researchers who study the Earth's climate have to say on the subject. What evidence can you provide, that you, RickyJ, an anonymous poster on an Internet forum, are correct and they are wrong?

The Earth does not have a relatively static atmosphere like Venus has, its constant winds at the jet stream level ensure that most heat from Earth leaves through convection.

How do YOU know what the Venusian atmosphere was like prior to its oceans evaporating, or how it was millions of years ago? Are you a planetary scientist who has studied the data, or are you just giving us your uneducated opinion?

How do YOU know it ever had oceans?

Are you just giving us your uneducated opinion, or are you just parroting the global warming scientists who are funded by the government and the elite?

Actually that is exactly what the MAJORITY of them have to say about it.

The high temperature in Springfield yesterday was only 69 degrees. This is the coldest high temperature on record for July 3. The old record of 70 degrees was set in 1892.

ANY legitimate scientist will agree that short term weather patterns do NOT reflect long term global trends. Then again you probably already knew that, right?

That is what planetary scientists have been able to determine. Funny how you agree with those calling themselves scientists when it suits your agenda, but claim they don't know what they're talking about when the data disagrees with your position.

No, YOU are wrong. It is the most widely accepted theory. We of course can not know for SURE what was there millions of years ago, we have to rely on geological features and other data to determine how the planet may have been back then.

Well it's certainly a large list, but since there isn't any contact info for any of the individuals listed, for all I know they either made up the names or ran a webcrawler that found anyone with the Phd next to their name and inserted it into their list.

I'll see if I can actually verify if any of those people did in fact sign the list.

Yeah, they've got the petition in one pocket and a submission for a gubmint grant in the other.

I think I'll have to agree with you on that...

Those who have signed such a petition are dismissing global warming out of hand, and I can't see how a neutral scientist can do that in regards to the subject, when those with the resources and backgrounds to study such things have said the opposite.

If anything, a neutral person would advise caution on the matter, even if they may not totally agree on the chance that we are in danger of major climate changes if the current trend is not stopped.
