Afghan officials are reeling over what they say is a second US-led air raid which has killed civilians.

The latest strike is said to have occurred on Sunday morning in Nangarhar, and according to local witnesses, targeted a wedding party.

The Deh Bala district governor Hamisha Gul has told the AFP newsagency 22 people were killed in the strike, nineteen of them women and children.

Scores more were wounded.

A witness, Lal Wazir, who was covered in blood after carrying some of those wounded to hospital, said outside the hospital, "The wedding participants were on their way to the groom's house. They stopped in a narrow location for rest. The plane came and bombed the area. There were between 80 to 90 people altogether."

The U.S. military said the air attack was targeting militants, and denied any civilians were killed. The strike is the second in two days that local officials say killed civilians.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai has ordered an investigation into Friday's attack by U.S. aircraft on the border of Konar and Nurestan provinces that killed at least 15 civilians.

The US has denied any civilians were killed, saying those that died were militants.

Karzai said Sunday he wants to know what happened and why there are conflicting reports.

The United Nations says nearly 700 Afghan civilians have been killed this year in the war between Taliban insurgents and foreign forces.

Mr. Karzai has previously called on foreign troops to minimize civilian casualties.

Separately, Afghan officials say three children were injured Sunday when a suicide bomber detonated a car bomb near a German police training mission in northern Afghanistan.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

On the bright side, at least PM Harper is not also calling about an encore snuffing performance of Canadian soldiers...

The U.S. military said the air attack was targeting militants, and denied any civilians were killed.

The definition of a militant: Any Afghani who isn't wearing a USA flag lapel pin and a 36"x48" flag on the roof of his vehicle.

How in the name of Photobucket can these assholes identify "militants" from the air?

Answer: They can't. Unless you consider that everyone in the country hates the US because of these indiscriminate killings, and all are "legit targets" for state of the art jet fighters and A to G weapons.

Yeah, boy, we shore wouldn't want any of them dam terrorists to get a foothold in Afghanistan, would we?

Do you recall how long the soviets tried to subdue the afghanis/mujahadeen/whatever? We've been there about 7 years now and while I've read of bragging on how well we're doing, it seems like quite the opposite is happening.

More than seems. The numbers of deaths of US soldiers was higher last month in Afghanistan than in Iraq.

Afghanistan is very rugged and unyielding much like its very primitive people. We need to exit that nation because we can't "civilize" it, or colonize it, or persuade the people to like us. Staying there will kill our people needlessly.

Of course we're not there to 'win' and then move on. There's poppies to protect/worry about, for one thing.

And what's the death of some young dumb 'merikan son or daughter worth in the overall scheme of things--after all, it isn't 'their son or daughter' who is getting their head blown off, etc.

I don't know what was in 'their' thinking........but the soviets were a hell of a lot closer to AFghanistan, and they didn't 'mission accomplish'. And yet our PTB think sending a handfull of troops there is gonna solve anything.

And our choice of 'friends', i.e., Pakis.......

Seems like we've been stuck in stupid for several years now.

Nine years.

And, we cannot win. The rebels are fighting for their homes, their families, their culture and their very lives.

Americans are fighting to get a good night's sleep sometime between now and when they hopefully rotate out of that Hellhole.

Poppy routes need to be in secure places. Afghanistan is the opposite and will never be anything than what it is today and what it was 1000 years ago - a primitive, rugged, unyielding hellhole and the Afghan people want to stay the way they are - primitive and unsubdued any foreigners. Laura Bush's do-gooder-pie-in-the-sky dreams about Afghan women attending Harvard and becoming the suffragettes of Islam is beyond laughable. We're throwing good $ after bad in that nation.

If there is one thing we should have taken from our "good friends", the Pakis, that is the message: DON"T MESS WITH THE AFGHANS! If you will recall, Mushareff was always loathe to send any Paki troops to the lawless mountainous area between Pakistan and Afghanistan because it was like sending them on a suicide mission. So believe me when I say - we don't want a larger troop force in Afghanistan - it wouldn't bring us any closer to "civilizing" them anyways - we need to do what the Soviets did ie. forget Afghanistan! - we need to get our butts out of there while we can. No good will come out of Afghanistan - it's like Africa of the East.

Forgive me for my long-winded rant about the hopelessness of staying in Afghanistan. We all can see it but it is so frustrating that DC refuses to admit that Afghanistan occupation is another very bad judgment call. As you said earlier, we...correction: THEY...seem to be stuck in stupid mode.

Rants aren't long winded when they hit the mark.......its when people dance on the head of a pin while trying to convince you of something that is so far=fetched even a short bus rider can spot it that it needs to have something done. :)

Besides, whenever you rant, it is with backed up facts and precision. :)
