Afghan officials are reeling over what they say is a second US-led air raid which has killed civilians. The latest strike is said to have occurred on Sunday morning in Nangarhar, and according to local witnesses, targeted a wedding party.
The Deh Bala district governor Hamisha Gul has told the AFP newsagency 22 people were killed in the strike, nineteen of them women and children.
Scores more were wounded.
A witness, Lal Wazir, who was covered in blood after carrying some of those wounded to hospital, said outside the hospital, "The wedding participants were on their way to the groom's house. They stopped in a narrow location for rest. The plane came and bombed the area. There were between 80 to 90 people altogether."
The U.S. military said the air attack was targeting militants, and denied any civilians were killed. The strike is the second in two days that local officials say killed civilians.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai has ordered an investigation into Friday's attack by U.S. aircraft on the border of Konar and Nurestan provinces that killed at least 15 civilians.
The US has denied any civilians were killed, saying those that died were militants.
Karzai said Sunday he wants to know what happened and why there are conflicting reports.
The United Nations says nearly 700 Afghan civilians have been killed this year in the war between Taliban insurgents and foreign forces.
Mr. Karzai has previously called on foreign troops to minimize civilian casualties.
Separately, Afghan officials say three children were injured Sunday when a suicide bomber detonated a car bomb near a German police training mission in northern Afghanistan.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

On the bright side, at least PM Harper is not also calling about an encore snuffing performance of Canadian soldiers...
