Dead Constitution See other Dead Constitution Articles Title: The Senate FISA Vote: Our 4th Amendment rights ENDED today. The following is a news story from the Electronic Frontier Foundation. IN A TRAGIC, SHAMEFUL AFFRONT TO THE US CONSTITUTION, THE SENATE APPROVED THE FISA AMENDMENTS ACT passed by the House last month. The bill radically expands the president's spying powers and grants immunity to phone companies that cooperated in the illegal warrantless wiretapping program. Many senators courageously opposed telecom immunity, and several amendments were offered in an attempt to remove or modify the immunity provision, but they failed. Despite this serious setback, EFF vows that the fight for accountability over the president's illegal surveillance is far from over -- we will continue to fight in the courtroom and in Congress to defend the cause of liberty. www.eff.org/press/archives/2008/07/09 EFFector Vol. 21, No. 23 July 9, 2008 editor@eff.org <>us.mc545.mail.yahoo.com/mc/compose?to=editor@eff.org> A Publication of the Electronic Frontier Foundation ISSN 1062-9424 --------- From a Ron Paul Meet-up Member: Our 4th Amendment rights ENDED today. They were summarily executed by our elected representatives in Washington DC. Fourth Amendment Protection from unreasonable search and seizure. The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized. Friends, The Senate FISA Vote was a shameful capitulation to corporate and presidential powers. No Statement against the Bill was made. The Cloture vote ending debate was 72-26, killing a filibuster. Most of the Democrats caved in. The final vote was 69-28 for the measure. This is a terrible tragedy for our Republic. Such a betrayal will not be forgotten by liberal democrats or libertarians. They will remember how the Democrats sold out the 4th Amendment for $95 Billion in pork. If it isn't obvious to the American people by now, it should be. Our so-called Representatives in Washington pay only lip service to the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Their agenda is to get reelected by pandering to corporate interests, and to retain power indefinitely at our expense. Keep in mind what the implications of this FISA Bill are. No electronic or telephone communication is now safe from executive snooping. You must assume that everything you write or say is being monitored, or at least stored and data mined for their purposes. It can and will be used to stifle dissent, harass, blackmail, intimidate, and to keep their political opponents at bay. Richard Nixon would be proud. We will not forget this decision, and will only double our efforts at fighting for our natural born freedoms.
