Two teens attacked by gang with machetes in Brooklyn BY TANANGACHI MFUNI, JESS WISLOSKI and JONATHAN LEMIRE DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITERS

Sunday, July 13th 2008, 1:02 AM

A machete-wielding mob marching down a gritty Brooklyn street stabbed a pair of teenagers Saturday during a bloody night in the city that left two other men dead, police said.

About 15 suspected gang members, wearing T-shirts over their faces, stormed down S. Third St. in Williamsburg around 2 a.m. brandishing 18-inch blades and yelling for their intended target to show himself, witnesses said.

"People were screaming; they were saying, 'We want Melvin!'" said one witness too afraid to give his name.

But when they reached Melvin's home, the gang couldn't find him. So the rabid crew - who said they belonged to the Trinitarios gang - turned on two of Melvin's friends.

Different country same result

Young criminals are the most violent Francois Rank and Victor Khupiso

The younger the criminal, the more violent

Young criminals are more likely to rape, torture and kill householders and their families during robberies than their older counterparts, researchers reveal.

# Crime stats: Police claim easy victories

House robbery figures rose by 13.5%, or 1720 cases, which defies police efforts to stem the tide of attacks they say lead many to believe that crime in South Africa is worse than it is.

Despite reports of families being seriously injured by armed robbers, victims were seriously assaulted in only 2% of house robberies.

Half of all armed house attacks occurred in Gauteng, and a quarter in KwaZulu-Natal.

Although many people believe house robbery victims are predominantly white, research shows that the victims’ race does not matter.

Institute for Security Studies senior researcher Dr Johan Burger said these criminals “target people based on whether they will be able to enrich themselves”.

“They target both black and white and race plays no role in the selection,” he said.

Unisa police practice lecturer Rudolph Zinn said research conducted for his doctorate — in which he studied 30 convicted hijackers and 30 jailed house robbers — found that race and prejudice played little part.

“The guys in prison for house robbery represent the demographics of South Africa. There are white house robbers too. It has moved to a point where colour and culture no longer play a role,” he said.

Burger said it was difficult to understand why some house robbers harmed their victims. He said most research identified two types of violence.

“The first phase is the attack phase, which is used to intimidate the victim and achieve control. Criminals go into the target home violently, with the idea of subduing their victims and asserting themselves. But once they have achieved this, then normally there will not be any further violence — unless there is resistance,” he said.

The second phase of violence kicks in when criminals want to extract information, such as PIN numbers and safe keys. It can include assault and even torture.

“This amounts to only about 2% of cases,” Burger said.

Zinn’s research showed that SA’s most violent criminals are aged between 18 and 24.

Criminals involved in crime before the age of 18 are more likely to become violent, and graduate to house robbery and hijacking, which has increased by 4.4% or 602 cases.

“Criminals in SA tend to be younger. And the younger they are, the more violent they are. I found some of them get involved with crime from the age of 12,” Zinn said.

Burger agreed. “Our main group of criminals, especially violent criminals, come from the age group of 18 to 28. But we are not certain why that is.”

“Personally, I believe this has a lot to do with the conditions that these people come from. It makes it difficult for them to get employment if (their) education is lacking.”

Nathi Myoyo was 18 and had finished matric when he became a criminal. This was because he could not find a job, he said.

He began with petty theft and soon graduated to robbing affluent homes, owned by blacks and whites, in the Eastern Cape, Western Cape and Gauteng.

Armed with revolvers and pistols, Myoyo and his gang of five would “research” a house and establish the type of cars the owners drove, their security and how many dogs they had. They would strike when the family was at home to be sure to “get everything”.

“We would intimidate our victims so that they would be frightened and realise we mean business. We tied our victims’ hands behind their backs with wire, very tightly, which hurt. That made it impossible for our victims to make stupid moves,” he said. “We would take jewellery, money and cars. We sold the cars and spent the money on clothes to impress girls, and (buy) drugs.”

Myoyo, 29, spent time in four different prisons and now hosts a talk show on Alexandra community radio. He claims he never injured his victims, but said he did cause harm. “It would be torture for them not to know whether we would kill them afterwards. Sometimes I felt sorry, but I had to suppress that and act mercilessly to get what we wanted,” he said.

Police said this week the worst-affected policing area was Sandton, including the wealthy suburbs of Bryanston, Rivonia, Morningside and Sandhurst.

Other Gauteng areas plagued by house robbers include Honeydew, Randburg, Midrand, Tembisa, Wierdabrug, Douglasdale, Roodepoort, Brooklyn, Garsfontein and Parkview.

The worst-affected KwaZulu-Natal areas include KwaMashu, Umlazi, KwaDukuza, Esikhawini and Inanda.

Criminologist Anthony Altbeker said criminals understood that their victims’ fear helped them, and Zinn added that they used “maximum force” if they encountered resistance.

“House robbers use torture to get victims to disclose where the valuables are in the house. They have learned from experience that people tend to hide their valuables in more than one place in the house,” Zinn said.

And some among us still maintain violence doesn't work. Having fled the violence of Brooklyn, and looking at what SA has become, I'd suggest both represent evidence that violence does work. If anyone thinks these occupied areas can be recaptured by voting, faxing or petitioning, they're dreaming.

Ever since someone came up with the idea that you cannot beat your children this is the result....from the comment page

WHY KIDS KILL The bottom line is boundries. If you are not given boundries as a child you do not know right from wrong. How do you give boundries when you may not phisically restrain a child, you may not punish a child in any way or form that might be construed as physical or mental abuse. How are these children supposed to learn what is acceptable and what is not acceptable in society?

They dont, instead society changes and what was not acceptable 10 years ago becomes common place. The age of adulthood gets changed to 18, the age for sex gets lowered because everyone is doing it earlier and earlier instead of standing up and saying no more people are just turning a blind eye and hoping it does not affect them.

Take a look around, have you noticed that the parent that gives in to their children all the time have children that are rude to them and others, think only of themselves and often resort to outragous behaviour in an attemt to find a boundary.

Layers of liberalism rolled over intact, nuclear families in the 60s making boundaries blurred and creating a new normal. Since that insult came follow up waves of political correctness, diversity and multiculturalism all delivered to our living rooms thanks to TV and formal "education." One parent families gave way to same sex families who in turn raised/raise test tube children. Every one of this nations problems, and those of your former homeland, can be laid at the feet of the political left. Those who embrace it are my enemy. Those who fail to at least speak out against it, cowards.
