LONDON (Reuters) - The United States will announce in the next month that it plans to establish a diplomatic presence in Tehran for the first time in 30 years, a British newspaper said on Thursday. In a front-page report, the Guardian said Washington would open a U.S. interests section in the Iranian capital, halfway towards opening an embassy. The unsourced report by the newspaper's Washington correspondent said: "The Guardian has learned that an announcement will be made in the next month to establish a U.S. interests section in Tehran, a halfway house to setting up a full embassy. "The move will see US diplomats stationed in the country." Senior U.S. diplomat William Burns said in testimony to Congress last week the United States was looking to opening up an interest section in Tehran but had not made a decision yet. The Guardian said the development was "a remarkable turnaround in policy by President George Bush who has pursued a hawkish approach to Iran throughout his time in office." -Snip

Diplomats would carry pouches that are immune to customs inspections, and hand held sensors can evaluate RADAR defenses and pinpoint targets, everything from mullah playrooms to hardened underground compounds. Nightly uploads of data to a dedicated geostationary comsat can assist in the prep of a detailed map in order to guarantee maximum effect of smart weapons. It's been a long time since 'Merka has had opportunities to case the place with the CIA's best white people. If the last five years in Iraq has taught us anything it's that we can't trust "them dam browns". Sometimes they feed us bad intel because they wanna please their handlers (and get paid) sometimes they have transient attacks of shame or guilt, and sometimes they're double crossing us or, they're just plain stoopid shits.
The correct phrase may be covert vs. overt. The covert war's been underway for a few years now, IMO, since 2004 or 06 latest. Overt, let's see, either there is a major change of postition by Cheney or we are delivering ultimatums to the Iranians in Switzerland.
