Frank Marshall Davis: a forgotten voice in the Chicago Black Renaissance.

Like many creative and intellectual African Americans of the thirties and forties, Davis circulated in what the government and white society considered radical political groups, which signed petitions, sponsored rallies, forums, and poetry readings, and generally exhibited an anti-government progressivism, declaiming the existing inequalities of class and race, and proclaiming what they felt ought to be a true democracy. These activities served in the long run to effect a change in the national political consciousness of the public, heighten the awareness of the values and issues of democracy, and lay the groundwork for the Civil Rights Movement which was yet to come.

When Davis joined the powerful Chicago labor movement, he risked calling attention to himself in a period rife with government suspicion and censorship:

From now on I knew I would be described as a Communist but frankly I had reached the stage where I didn't give a damn. Too many people I respected as Freedom Fighters were listed as Red for me to fear name calling (1992, 276).
