UPDATE JULY 22: McCain campaign sources confirm to CNN that there have been discussions high in the campaign about naming a running mate this week. They also say that the choices have been "narrowed" to the point where McCain could make a decision by the week's end.

Robert Novak reports:

Sources close to Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign are suggesting he will reveal the name of his vice presidential selection this week while Sen. Barack Obama is getting the headlines on his foreign trip. The name of McCain's running mate has not been disclosed, but Mitt Romney has led the speculation recently. The news set off a flurry of reporting, with Politico's Jonathan Martin appearing to throw some water on Novak's story:

John McCain has narrowed his vice-presidential possibilities to the point where he considered a decision this week -- but he's likely to hold off, say sources close to the campaign.

The prospect of stepping on Barack Obama's much-anticipated overseas trip with the headline-grabbing news was discussed among the small inner-circle of McCain aides and advisers privy to the running mate decision, according to a McCain source. [...]

One inner-circle McCain adviser said the longtime plans are to name the selection close to the Republican convention, on the theory that all that really matters is the final sprint to Election Day.

"No one is panicking about this week," the adviser said. "Frankly, it is excellent for the press to be getting Obamamania out of their system."

Meanwhile, Chris Cillizza reports:

John McCain will huddle with vice presidential aspirant Bobby Jindal during a trip to New Orleans later this week, sources close to the campaign confirm to The Fix.

McCain's trip to Louisiana on Wednesday was the cause of much head scratching in the political world as it was not in keeping with a week of planned stops in battleground states.

But, the meeting with Jindal, who has been the state's governor since 2007, suggests that McCain himself is deeply engaged in the process of picking his second-in-command and that the youthful Jindal is under serious consideration.

Lets see, Dole chose Kemp (he disappeared off the political radar after that loss). Before that, Bush #1 had Dan Quayle (who is now out of politics and into lobbying), so where am I going with this? Anyone McCain chooses will be banished to the political third ring of hell after McCain hits his 42% of the popular vote (if that). No way Romney, or anyone else looking to extend their political future buys on to a McCain ticket. Look for a fellow over the hill loser or Leiberman.

that's what i'm thinking...at this point, i don't think it much matters as i believe that Obama is the selection. his *choice* of VP will be the interesting one. (particularly since the report that Obama is more popular among jews than is Lieberman)

Does that mean that McCain won't be considering Hillary Clinton for VP? Too bad, they would be a perfect match.

Anyone that would run with McCain given the present situation would be insane.

They all should run away from him.

Maybe a candidate who wants some to establish a profile, gain instant visibility in politics who may be contemplating a run at state Senator ( California) in the future? ie. Carly whatsherface ( I'll know her last name after she gets some visibility in politics)

I would not want to be seen in public with McKooK under any circumstance.

He is an egoistic megalomaniac that should NEVER have power in his hands.

Beside that, he is a common run of the mill SOB that I do not like.

Mel Martinez.

He's the asshat who gave away the store when Bush signed the minority housing giveaway - "The Dream Act."

This choice makes complete sense for an open border freak like McCain.

Bush and McCain are in the same boat - they're despised by conservatives and liberals alike.

Mad Mac couldn't even see that repeated loud, public endorsements by a President with a 25% approval rating was a political kiss of death, so he can count on finding somebody to tag along with him.
