WELLINGTON, New Zealand - A family court judge in New Zealand has had enough with parents giving their children bizarre names here, and did something about it.

Just ask Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii. He had her renamed.

Judge Rob Murfitt made the 9-year-old girl a ward of the court so that her name could be changed, he said in a ruling made public Thursday. The girl was involved in a custody battle, he said.

The new name was not made public to protect the girl's privacy.

"The court is profoundly concerned about the very poor judgment which this child's parents have shown in choosing this name," he wrote. "It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap, unnecessarily."

The girl had been so embarrassed at the name that she had never told her closest friends what it was. She told people to call her "K" instead, the girl's lawyer, Colleen MacLeod, told the court.

In his ruling, Murfitt cited a list of the unfortunate names.

Registration officials blocked some names, including Fish and Chips, Yeah Detroit, Keenan Got Lucy and Sex Fruit, he said. But others were allowed, including Number 16 Bus Shelter "and tragically, Violence," he said.

New Zealand law does not allow names that would cause offense to a reasonable person, among other conditions, said Brian Clarke, the registrar general of Births, Deaths and Marriages.

Clarke said officials usually talked to parents who proposed unusual names to convince them about the potential for embarrassment.

I'm guessing that the parents are Pacific-Islanders who have been infected with the "thug-lifestyle".

I have a firm conviction that parents who give their children weird names are closet sadists. I had a neighbor who named their kid "Devo" after the Rock Group Devo. Fucking perverts - pardon my french. Doing that to a child is simply cruel and does provide a disability built in to their name.

Personally I think the parents who do this should be subject to a Whipping in the Publick Square for child abuse.

As in Bush? Hell, imagine if they had named one of their clan IAN (as in EyeIN)...

Zappa was a sharp character but was also an iconoclast and bordered on anti-social. While I can appreciate that he was a gifted artist I do not agree with everything he said or did.

In his case the weird names, while not excused, are understandable. He USED the naming of his children as a vehicle to proclaim his iconoclasm and it was not intended as any benefit to the kids - they were just "expressions" of his iconoclasm.

I had friends that liked Zappa, but I never thought of him as highly as they did. Myself, I thought he was just baked on too much acid, but he claimed he never did drugs. He was baked on something.

Zappa was very much anti-drug. I think he saw too many friends fry their minds on them. However, he was also chronically antagonistic, with a genius level I.Q., and was not at all tolerant of those he regarded as fools, and with society in general. I think he may have felt isolated as do some people with very high I.Q.'s as we live in a culture which worships mediocrity.

Any fan of Zappa has to watch this. What he was saying in 1986 has proven to be quite prophetic.

If the parents are stupid enough to give their kid a name like that, the judge should have done more than just rename the girl. He should have ordered both of the parents sterilized.
