Huge Crowds Left with Mixed Feelings By Mark Waffel and Josh Ward Some cut and paste: Expectations were sky-high for the speech US presidential candidate Barack Obama delivered in Berlin Thursday evening. Enormous crowds welcomed what the senator had to say, but not everyone was convinced by his delivery. Patricia Gusovius, 48, of Berlin, brought her 5-year-old daughter Hanan to the speech particularly because of Obama's background. "I'm here because my daughter has an Egyptian father and I'm German," Gusovius told SPIEGEL ONLINE. "She can see that Obama is a mix, like her. Mixed race families have a hard time in Western culture, and he can be her role model." After excitedly awaiting her turn to speak, Hanan added: "We spent a whole day at school learning about him." Reactions to the almost 30-minute speech hit both extremes. "It was excellent, not good, but excellent," said Henry Aikins, 63, a pensioner from Berlin, though originally from Ghana. "It was good he didn't just talk about America, but Africa and other continents as well. … He really moved me in my heart." Anton Kliegl, however, a 50-year-old managing consultant from Regensburg, didn't see things that way. "In general I have to say I was a bit disappointed," Kliegl said. "The coverage of the primaries created this impression that he was an amazing speaker who could carry away his audience. He didn't do that tonight. I really expected more."

German public broadcasters ARD and ZDF, along with all-news channels ntv and N24 trailed Barack Obama every step on his one-day visit. All four nets carried Obama's speech in front of Berlin's Victory Column live in both English and German. "This is an unprecedented level of coverage for a U.S. presidential candidate," Bernhard Mullmann, a program exec at ZDF told The Hollywood Reporter. "But I think it is justified because of the level of interest with Obama in Germany. ... It is comparable with President Kennedy's legendary visit (to Berlin in 1963). Both in the hopes Germans have that Obama will bring change in the U.S. and also in the hype and way his speech is being staged for political purposes." Berlin police said that as many as 1 million people were expected to show up to hear the speech. German weekly Der Spiegel summed up the mood with a cover headline over a grinning picture of Obama: "Germany meets the Superstar."

With Europeans clearly favouring Mr Obama over his Republican rival John McCain, the reality back in America is that their presidential race is close, with many voters still harbouring significant doubts about the Democrat's lack of experience and core values. Although it is early days in the general election campaign, and with Mr Obama still favoured to win, the polls show that since he captured his party's nomination a month ago, Mr McCain has actually gained ground on his opponent. Such a dynamic is all the more surprising because Mr McCain has suffered a bad fortnight. His campaign co-chairman resigned after calling Americans worried about the economy "whiners"; his opposition to a timetabled withdrawal in Iraq is in danger of being eclipsed by events on the ground; and a series of gaffes and sheer bad luck have contrasted poorly with Mr Obama's almost flawless foreign tour. Yet a Wall Street Journal/NBC survey has underscored voter unease with Mr Obama and the fact that his poll lead over Mr McCain remains small, in part because more Americans identify with Mr McCain's "background and values" than with Mr Obama's. Many voters feel that they still don't know Mr Obama. The poll gave Mr Obama a six-point lead over Mr McCain, but the Republican held significant advantages on the issues of experience, who would make a better commander-in-chief and leadership. They key question for voters was what type of president Mr Obama would make, indicating that if he can quell lingering doubts, he could win handsomely - but if those doubts grow, Mr McCain has a great chance of victory. While Mr Obama met with Israeli and Palestinian leaders on Wednesday, Mr McCain was holding a campaign rally in north-eastern Pennsylvania, in a reliably Democratic region. "For the past two days on talk radio here, pretty much every caller wanted to know why Barack Obama was in Europe and the Middle East rather than talking to people back home about the issues here," said Andrew Seder, a reporter for the Times Leader in Wilkes Barre who covered the McCain event. With record-high petrol prices, rising unemployment, and a gloomy economy, Mr Seder said: "They just don't understand why he's over there right now. They see the trip as a political stunt." Mr Seder said that the normally reliably Democratic area was up for grabs this year, because of doubts about Mr Obama. "A lot of Democrats were in the McCain audience and are going to vote for him," Mr Seder said. "I haven't figured out if it's a racial thing, his experience, or his lack of ties to the military, but a lot of people just can't get on board for Obama."

Or maybe the anti-war/anti-police state Democrats are pissed that Obama has stabbed them in the back. At this point Obama promises more Police Action nonsense than McCain does while at the same time refusing to undo Dubya's TSA/DHS cluster-fuck. Combine that with spending policy that would make even the most tax and spend loving "D" recoil in horror and it's little wonder the shine is coming off the Obamania.

I guess I haven't paid attention much lately, but this seems to be a particularly strange election cycle. I've grown accustomed to the required Israel trip during a campaign, but what is with all the different countries the candidates visit and make speeches in? Last time George P. Bush was sent into Mexico to campaign for George W. Bush, and McCain went to South America, and here Obama is having rallies in Germany. I don't recall the various Russian Presidential candidates coming to New York City to campaign (or Israel for that matter), so why are US Presidential candidates travelling all over the world to speak to foreigners about how great they would be as the latest Captain of the ship of fools? It's not like any of those foreigners have any say in the matter. Though, upon reflection, they might have as much say in it as we do.

Good observation. On the bright side, we're not the only ones who have been screwed. Hillary must be fuming at this point. Obama is revealing himself to be an arrogant empty suit day by day on his around the world glad handing foreign tour. And what does McCain do? Instead of taking advantage of Obama's mis-steps, McCain buries himself in some obscure German restaurant in Pennsylvania. hehehe Hillary was stabbed in the back by TPTB big time. She was supposed to be the presumptive President in waiting. Polls showed that she had the best chance of beating McCain. It was supposed to be a close neck and neck race but she would prevail. Polls showed Obama would lose big time against McCain. She had all her ducks in a row and then...a new script was written and her role was ended. McCain's role changed, too. Instead of playing a tough tireless campaigner, he was told to go on snooze control. Obama was given the starring role of dynamic winner Messiah world citizen. That's what TPTB wrote and that's how the plot line will be played.
Isn't it out of character for her to be laying this low??? Her ego has never been silenced like this before, I smell a Clinton-scheme in the works.
I think she's silent because that's the bargain she made with the Dem Party machinery. She'd be assisted in ridding herself of campaign debts ( and she had accumulated a ton) if she kept her silence. Also the other carrot dangled before her eyes was a cushy new cabinet post like Universal Health Services Czar or a Supreme Court Justice position to replace Muttface Ginsberg who is hanging on by a claw waiting for a Dem Pres to be elected in November.
That's because the sheeple are too stupid and weak to do anything about it.
