Near the close of his visit to Israel on Wednesday, Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama met with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. A major topic of their long conversation was Obama's declared willingness to engage in direct dialogue with Tehran.

Obama reportedly told Olmert that he is interested in meeting the Iranians in order to issue clear ultimatums. "If after that, they still show no willingness to change their nuclear policy, then any action against them would be legitimate," an Israeli source quoted him as saying.

Obama said it is clear that the Iranian nuclear issue would be a top priority for him as president, but said that as part of the diplomatic effort to end Tehran's enrichment program, the Iranians must be given an opportunity to change.

The presumptive nominee also emphasized the importance of solving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He said he had been impressed by the Palestinians' assessment that there has been substantial progress in the talks.

Obama also met with Noam Shalit, whose son Gilad has been held captive in the Gaza Strip for over two years, as well as with the Goldwasser and Regev families. Shalit said Obama sympathized with the family and its public struggle to bring Gilad home. He declined to comment on whether Obama would intervene personally in talks for his son's release.

I guess his "coercive diplomacy" means to simply make demands one is sure the other party will be either unwilling or unable to comply with.

It's been said that every time we have a war B.H. Liddell-Hart's book "Strategy" goes into another printing. Perhaps someone should send a copy of it to Obama. Hart was rightfully pilloried for misattributing credit to himself in the version of Guderian's book that he edited, but his book "Strategy" is really quite good. It's been a decade or so since I read it, but one of the things that has stayed with me was his advice on diplomacy. Paraphrasing, it said that one should always leave the opponent with a way out that saves face, since they'll take it, and also ensure that you leave yourself with a way out that saves face.

King George the W forgot that part, so in the runup to the Iraq war, even if he wanted to change his mind, he had so effectively painted himself into a corner that there was no way out that wouldn't damage his male pride or make him (and by extension, America) look weak. At many points throughout the '90s we could have changed the way we dealt with Hussein. I remmeber around 1995 reading articles talking about normalizing relations with Iraq. But once Billy Jeff "Crooked Stick" Clinton made it official policy that nothing in Iraq would change until Hussein was out, there was no way that Hussein was going to do anything we desired. And right up to the beginning of the Iraq War, Hussein allegedly offered to step aside, if allowed to go into exile. King George the W promptly ruined that opportunity by saying that we'd hunt him to the end of the earth to prosecute him.

Presenting demands to Iran that tell them to stop what they're authorized to do is a non-starter. Perhaps once Ahmadinejad is gone they could try a demand so stupid, but he's kind of based his whole persona around not doing what we want and defying us, so it would be a disastrous loss of face for him. That's ignoring that we're a signatory to the NPT, and that Iran, also being a signatory, is authorized to pursue peaceful nuclear technologies. I've posted the pertinent paragraphs a couple of times. So we'd be violating that treaty in that way, plus we're going to violate it by giving India various technologies for their program.

To keep track, McCain openly says we need to attack Iran without qualification, while Obama says that we need to present unrealistic demands to Iran that they'll be sure to reject, and then we can bomb. Real difference. Hope for change, indeed. At least McCain has the more honest stance.

Your whole post was most excellent reading. I only pasted your last sentence because it was such a sad poignant ending - it summed up what we sheeple are left with - scratching around looking for one single redeeming quality in 2 equally disastrous Presidential candidates. This is what it's come to - an honest madman vs a dissembling empty suit.

Glub, glub, glub...going going gone...America we hardly knew you...just a little over 200 short years, not quite 250.

I wonder if there's any hope for life to flourish on Mars? If yes, beam me up, Scotty.
