Rep. Nancy McLain would like to set the record straight on recent comments made by the Mohave County Minutemen. "I did not vote in favor of the North American Union," She said. "I am not for the establishment of a North American Union." During the last session, the Arizona Legislature sent a memorial bill to the U.S. Congress asking that Congress not consider a North American Union. "It's kind of like a postcard," McLain said. "It has no force or legislative effect." She generally votes against such "postcards" because she considers them a waste of time and effort. That was one of two reasons why she voted against the North American Union memorial bill. The second reason was that first draft of the bill, which originated in the Arizona House of Representatives, was so poorly written that it almost didn't make sense, she said. The bill was defeated once in the House and then passed when it was reintroduced. It was sent on to the Arizona Senate, which improved the language, approved it and sent it back to the House for final approval. McLain voted for the much-improved bill. "I don't think they (the Mohave County Minutemen) know that I voted for it the second time," she said. McLain said she also voted for a bill that requires employers to verify their employee's status through the Basic Employment Verification Pilot Program. She missed the first vote on the bill because she was testifying about another bill in front of a Senate committee at the time. She also supported Proposition 200, the Employer Sanctions Law, which penaalizes employers that hire illegal immigrants. McLain and the Minutemen do agree on one thing. "Out of the 25 or more immigration bills that have come before me during my service, I have only voted against one," she said. That bill would have charged illegal immigrants with trespassing if they were caught in the state of Arizona. She voted against it because the bill raised constitutional issues and would most likely be unenforceable. It could also involve the state in another lawsuit, which would cost taxpayers more money. McLain is running again this year for one of the two District 3 Arizona House of Representatives seats.
