I was on my way back from the store and waiting at a stoplight and next to me was a brand spanking new champagne colored FLEETWOOD DISCOVERY RV (Starting at $200,760*) with a tow bar pulling a late model champagne colored FORD EXPLORER, and they both had Delaware vanity plates.

The RV plate was "PRAIZ HM" and the EXPLORER's WAS "PRAZ HM"

The RV had a Club Lazydays plate on the back.

So, at a time when fuel prices are forcing trucking and delivery companies and airlines under and America is teetering on the brink of things too terrible to contemplate, we have at least "friend o' GAWD" out there whose faith is unshakable. Yep, GAWD Almighty helped him accrue all that wealth (He sent an angel in the middle of the night who said, Invest in private prisons for profit!" and, he did!) and, he's determined to reap the bountiful harvest of that faith. And, to let us sinners know that it pays to publicly praise him from who all blessings flow!

I just hope that he isn't the only one to show up at a CLub Lazydays RV site. Most folks may be too ashamed of such an ostentatious display of wealth and fuel gluttony at a time like this. But, then again, most aren't shielded by the cross, the sword and the Arm Of The Lord!

If God has been this good to him, then surely he has passed on many blessings via helping the poor and afflicted and less fortunate among us. We can only hope so.

And if he hasn't/doesn't, then God will take care of him in His own way and in His own time. When that occurs, we wouldn't want to be jealous or envious of this guy's playthings--at least I wouldn't. To paraphrase, "If you've done it to the lesser among you, you've essentially done it to Me" comes to mind....and from the One who said the poor will always be with us.

Apparently I should have taken a picture, so, you wouldn't feel obliged to defend something that was just God damned obscene!

And, those who know me know that I don't give a damn about material wealth.

And, I wouldn't be caught dead in a white Rolls like the one I saw Michael Jackson in years ago. I'm more attuned to ABBA's philosophy. I've never even worn pricey jewelry (that I received from admirers) other than a Timex watch and wedding ring, even when I was a well paid glam musician.

But, think of it as jealousy if you must be defensive about it.

American Economist Thorsten Veblen invented a couple terms for people like this. Most people have heard at least the first one:

Conspicuous Consumption.

The other I think is just as telling:

Pecuniary Emulation.

People who, falsely, believe that ostentatious displays of petty material wealth somehow imparts to them a specialness not found in the little people.

I do not begrudge success to anyone but tasteless displays, and false idols of materialism, are not exactly spiritual values.

Exactly. All the happiness you will ever have lies within the spirit which you are.

The true meaning of a happy life IS NOT "buy a Mercedes".

If I ever buy a Mercedes it will be because they are sturdy reliable automobiles. However, I probably would not buy one because I don't care to be associated with the types of people who presently buy them.

Now a Jaguar is another matter. It is interesting to note the differences between people and their cars. Mercedes drivers are, almost invariably, solid, humorless, and pretentious. Jaguar drivers are either reserved or content.

I sometimes wonder what kind of a sad shallow world that people who feel compelled to follow the herd live in? All I know is I don't want to join them.

I knew Ford had decided to sell the brand, but I didn't know it was to Mercedes.

Damn! There goes that option.

Although, I really don't have anything against Mercedes per se - it is a quality automobile - it is their pretentious self inflated clientele that annoys me.

However, Jaguar still carries for me the cache of what I aspire to - genteel sportiness and gentlemanly behaviour without being pretentious about it. Just observing - people who buy Jags have fun and those who buy Mercedes have no sense of humor.

I'll go with humor any day.

Interesting you say that. The E class is a reliable work horse of the luxury car market, whereas Jags are very pretty but often unreliable, so imo Jags could be viewed as the more frivolous ostentatious purchase.

Don't get me wrong - I think Jags are beautiful to look at, but one needs to have alot of $ and patience to keep a Jag running.

It was just something I noticed a few years ago and have followed up by observing over time. Like all generalities it does not hold up to every case - there are pretentious Jag Owners just as there are fun loving and humor filled Mercedes drivers, but as a generalized stereotype it seems to hold true often enough to be amusing to note.

The key really is "materialism". Those people who regard material things as the end all and be all tend to have no sense of humor and not a lot of fun in life. A lot of Mercedes owners are very much into materialism.

Very well said.

The day I arrived in CA we stopped in Palm Springs to visit a friend of the fellow band member who was riding with me.

At the gas pumps was a tanned fellow with a boat trailer combo, and he had a brass plaque on the rear gunwale that read "He who dies with the most toys wins". (Is that from the Bible?) I'm quite sure that others here understand how stupid that looked.

I don't know if he was a Christian or, just an ordinary asshole who believed that everyone envied him.

Sadly, that did become true for a while. Just like Triumph and the MG which were murdered before them the British Trade Unionists wanted to be paid for "showing up". The poor work ethic and shoddy workmanship that ensued is what brought Jaguar to such low dudgeon that they were able to be purchased at a big discount.

However, when Ford bought Jaguar they went to work in restoring the quality which had once made Jaguar popular (along with the understated elegance of their designs). To a large degree they were successful but as your post proves the lingering image of unreliability prevented the brand from regaining its former glory. Thus sales lagged despite great improvements in quality. People are reluctant to shell out 60K+ for an unreliable automobile.

We'll have to see what the new owners do with the brand. I am hoping that they will continue to work to restore people's trust in Jaguar.

I didn't mean to imply that you, or anyone else for that matter are jealous of this man's material goods. I was trying to comment that if this person's heart isn't in the right place there is no room for jealousy or envy because of Gods' wrath...something I certainly don't want.

Neither do I feel any bit of defensiveness, or need to defend this person and what they do. Wealth does snot prevent a person from entering into Gods' presence; it is difficult because as a general matter, wealth is worshipped, whether it is set on a pedestal, or is obsessively thought of all the time.

You're not alone is not caring about material things, Dawgie. I need clothes because it is immoral, or in my case obscene, to run around butt nekkid! My home is modest; cute, but modest. My car is a 94, but I couldn't care less if it was 94 years old!!! So long as it runs when I want it to run to get me where I want to go. And I could go on, but......

All of this, of course, IMO, and how I am reading/understanding scriptures--something many don't do or like to do, or whatever, and that's ok by me. It's how I live though and I can't/won't deny it.

Sorry if you felt I was denigerating, or trying to, denigerate your character, dawgie--that would be one of the last things on this old mind.

Turn your back on the sun and you only see the shadows.
