BAGHDAD - Two Iraqi officials say the U.S. and Iraq are close to a deal under which all American combat troops would leave by October 2010 with remaining U.S. forces gone about three years later. ADVERTISEMENT

A U.S. official in Washington acknowledges progress has been made on the timelines for a U.S. departure but offered no firm date. Another U.S. official strongly suggested the 2010 date may be too ambitious.

A timetable is part of a security agreement being negotiated by U.S. and Iraqi officials. Both sides stress the deal is not final and could fall apart over the issue of legal immunity for American troops.

One of the U.S. officials said Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki had a long and "very difficult" telephone conversation Wednesday in which she pressed the Iraqi leader for more flexibility, particularly on immunity.

If no colonial style immunity for both soldiers and contractors, particularly the latter, there is essentially no way the occupation can continue.

And if the Irakis make a deal with a timeline, Bush pulls out the rug from under Obie.

Not bad for a stoopid guy.

If there is a timeline announced, you can bet it was decided awhile ago.

Or maybe the recent Bilderberg Society meetup in VA came with new orders. ;-)

This troop withdrawl plan is completely phony. I can see through it even if Obama, Hillary, McCain and Bush cannot.

A troop withdrawl will turn Iraq over to Iran. The Zionists have no intention of doing that. The plan is to attack Iran with ukes. When Muslims in Iraq and elsewhere object, they will exterminated too. Of course America will be destroyed too.

Or do they? Who's to say that Iran hasn't been playing their part in the creation of the Middle East / Persian Gulf Union??

Ahmadinejad arrives in Saudi Arabia

Analysts say that Iran is in Saudi to make sure its views and positions on Arab issues are heard [AFP]

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian president, has arrived in Saudi Arabia for talks which are likely to cover the crises in Lebanon and Iraq and Tehran's nuclear programme.

"In the meeting with King Abdullah, we will discuss those issues that should be carried out jointly in the Islamic world and also the region," Iran's IRNA news agency quoted Ahmadinejad as saying shortly before leaving Tehran.

Iranian state radio said the talks would also cover "Iran's nuclear case", adding that Manouchehr Mottaki, the foreign minister, and other senior officials were accompanying the president.

US and its allies are also curious about Iran's influence in Lebanon, the Palestinian territories and Iraq, where Saudi Arabia blames Iranian-backed Shia militias for sectarian killings.

Prominence

Analysts say that Iran wants to address these concerns ahead of an Arab League summit in Saudi Arabia in late March.

A Saudi-based Western diplomat said: "Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia have taken up the role of an alliance speaking in the name of the Arab world.

"So Iran is making sure its views and positions on Arab issues are heard at summits."

Saudi and Iranian officials have met several times in recent weeks to mediate between Lebanese opposition forces led by Hezbollah, a Shia group backed by Iran and Syria.

Hezbollah demands veto power in Lebanon's government and early elections, but Siniora has refused.

The standoff has paralysed parts of Beirut and occasionally led to violence.

Regional divisions

The crisis in Lebanon and Sunni-Shia fighting in Iraq has led to fears of growing sectarian divides across the region.

Saudi Arabia, Iran and Syria have accepted Iraq's invitation to a regional conference in March on easing tensions in Iraq.

Riyadh has led a drive in recent months to counter-balance Iran's influence in Lebanon, Iraq and the Palestinian territories.

The effort has been led by veteran diplomat Prince Bandar bin Sultan, who, Western diplomats in Riyadh say, is very close to the US administration.
