WASHINGTON — Former President Ford secretly advised the FBI that two of his fellow members on the Warren Commission doubted the FBI's conclusion that John F. Kennedy was shot from the sixth floor of the Texas Book Depository in Dallas, according to newly released records from Ford's FBI files.

Ford, still a congressman at the time, also told a senior FBI official about internal panel disputes over hiring staff, Chief Justice Earl Warren's timetable for completing the final report on the assassination and what panel members said about the FBI.

In turn, Assistant FBI Director Cartha "Deke" DeLoach confidentially advised Ford of FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover's position on panel disputes; discussed where leaks were coming from; and, with Hoover's personal approval, loaned him a bureau briefcase with a lock so he could securely take the FBI report on the 1963 assassination with him on a ski trip.

The new details were included in 500 pages of the FBI's large file on Ford, released in part this past week in response to requests under the Freedom of Information Act that The Associated Press and others made on the day Ford died in December 2006. The FBI intends to release additional documents about Ford in several batches, all with parts censored for law enforcement and privacy reasons.

That Ford served as the FBI's eyes and ears inside the commission has been known for years. Long ago, the government released a 1963 FBI memo that said Ford, then a Republican congressman from Michigan, had volunteered to keep the FBI informed about the panel's private deliberations, but only if that relationship remained confidential. The bureau agreed.

It was also well-known Ford was an outspoken proponent of the bureau's conclusion that Lee Harvey Oswald killed Kennedy acting alone.

A newly released memorandum provides more details about Ford's role as the FBI's informant. DeLoach wrote on Dec. 17, 1963, to outline what Ford told him in the congressman's office about the commission meeting the day before.

"Two members of the commission brought up the fact that they still were not convinced that the President had been shot from the sixth floor window of the Texas Book Depository," DeLoach wrote. "These members failed to understand the trajectory of the slugs that killed the President. He stated he felt this point would be discussed further but, of course, would represent no problem."

There was no explanation of what Ford meant by "no problem."

Warren Commission records released in 1997 revealed that in the final report Ford changed the staff's original description of one of Kennedy's wounds. Ford said then he only made the description more precise. Skeptics said Ford's wording falsely made the wound seem higher on the body to make the panel's conclusion that one bullet hit both Kennedy and Texas Gov. John Connally more plausible.

DeLoach also wrote that Ford wanted to take the FBI's confidential assassination report on a ski vacation but had no way to do so "in complete safety." DeLoach recommended lending Ford a bureau briefcase with a lock. The bottom of the memo contains a handwritten "OK" over Hoover's distinctive initial "H," which he regularly used in commenting on memos.

Most of the newly disclosed documents describe the relationship between the FBI under Hoover and influential members of Congress or the judiciary once Hoover was convinced that they were allies.

Hoover rewarded Ford with personal notes that congratulated him on re-election and on awards, thanked Ford for publicly defending the bureau and expressed sympathy over the death of Ford's mother. In turn, Ford responded with private and public praise for Hoover and the FBI.

Like other friendly officials, Ford was granted favors. Some Ford sought: a photo of Hoover, background checks on a maid the Fords wanted to hire and on a man with a Swedish accent seeking public office in Ford's district but who had not answered all his neighbors' questions about his personal background. Others were surprise gifts, such as a signed copy of Hoover's book on communism.

Ford was elected to Congress in 1948. Hoover first congratulated him on his re-election in 1952 and thereafter. An internal FBI memo in 1965 said that, "though we did experience some difficulty with all the members of the Warren Commission, Ford was of considerable help to the Bureau."

Many of the newly released records describe the bureau's controversial surveillance of anti-war and civil rights protesters as the FBI reported on plans for protest demonstrations at Ford's public appearances as a congressman, vice president and president.

Two documents provide a rare glimpse of the depth of security fears during the Cold War:

—A memo from Nov. 9, 1965, said the FBI performed a security check at Ford's request of telephones at his home in Virginia, his line at the phone company's central office and all points between. The FBI found no bugs, but a foreman said installation of new touch-tone dialing equipment in the area may have caused "some inadvertent noise on Mr. Ford's line."

—A memo from Dec. 2, 1959, showed the Navy was considering inviting Ford to a strategy conference at the Naval War College and asked the FBI — fully 11 years after Ford was first elected to Congress — whether Ford had any "subversive nature." The famously tightlipped FBI had amassed a large file on Ford, but replied only that when Ford had applied to work for the FBI in 1942 its background investigation "revealed no pertinent derogatory information."

Poster Comment:

Many who lived through the assassination of JFK knew instinctively something was wrong with the entire event and explaination. With Jerry Ford now a known FBI informant, the Warren Commission result should be regarded as nothing more than a dime store novel.

With Jerry Ford now a known FBI informant, the Warren Commission result should be regarded as nothing more than a dime store novel.

As a Congressman, Ford was elected by the people to work for them, not as a spy, mole or informant for the FBI.

On paper the FBI works at the behest of the government and instead it is the other way around. Of the redactions on the 500 pages there must be some very interesting and incriminating information.

It is easier and takes less time to name who might NOT have been involved in plotting and executing JFK's murder.

I can think of only Bobby and Teddy as clearly not being culpable. Well, throw in "Loves Me Like A Rock" Rose as well.

The list of enemies who wanted him gone is almost infinite.

"These members failed to understand the trajectory of the slugs that killed the President. He stated he felt this point would be discussed further but, of course, would represent no problem."

The above is a loaded statement if ever I read one, especially given Ford's now known reporting back to the FBI. When I was on the street, the comment that someone presented "no problem" clearly meant they could be either controlled or co-opted. I'm quite certain it had the same import in the mid 60s. This article should be a clear indicator to how far real history has deviated from fact.

Kennedy changed directions once elected and those changes did not sit well with many people, so you are quite correct.

To me it means that Ford and "others" on the panel would see to it that the wanted and desired results would be forthcoming.

Very interesting reading.......so he wanted to be in the FBI. Hmmmm....being a rat for the bureau,I reckon, is the next closest thing.

I never cared for Ford to begin with, but this just seals the record in my mind.

Wouldn't ya like to know exactly what is being 'blacked out' in all these pages and pages and yet pages to come and even more pages to come. Who else could have been betrayed?

That's exactly what he meant. It's no different from the language of the Gotti's and Soprano's, save for the formal education and political status of our elected hires. There isn't a question in my mind that we're in the grip of a rogue government and any illusion some hold for political change are ignoring the lessons of history.

Well said, JT.

I had no idea about Ford's role as FBI mole or his significant influence in purposefully mis-directing the Warren Commission Report's findings.

It is interesting how Arlen "single bullet theory" Specter, a young lawyer nobody at the time who was appointed ass't counsel to the Warren Commission, and how Congressman Ford, a milquetoast politician, benefited so greatly after their positions on the Warren Commission. Was it coincidental?

So this is how Ford became a made man in the two-party fraud. Interesting. Of course it's only coincidence that he played such an important role in the coverup of the Kennedy assassination and later became president.

Found this little blurb at Answers.com.

US History Encyclopedia: Warren Commission On 29 November 1963, one week after the murder of John F. Kennedy, President Lyndon Johnson signed Executive Order No. 11130, creating the President's Commission on the Assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The executive order instructed the seven-man panel to "evaluate all the facts and circumstances surrounding [the] assassination, including the subsequent violent death of the man charged with the assassination," Lee Harvey Oswald. Johnson directed all federal agencies to cooperate with the special panel, which soon became known as the Warren Commission, after its chairman, U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren.

The panel represented a careful political balancing act by Johnson. Warren was a towering figure among liberals because of the Supreme Court decisions reached under his stewardship. To offset him, Johnson picked Georgia Democratic senator Richard B. Russell, whose reputation (among conservatives) was the equal of Warren's. Other members from Congress were Senator John Sherman Cooper, a Kentucky Republican; Representative Hale Boggs, a Democrat from Louisiana; and then-Representative Gerald R. Ford, a Michigan Republican. Because of the international repercussions and intelligence issues involved, Johnson also appointed two lawyers with broad government experience: Allen W. Dulles, former director of the Central Intelligence Agency, and John J. McCloy, a former assistant secretary in the War Department.

Over the next ten months, the commission reviewed and expanded upon FBI, Secret Service, and CIA investigations; weighed the testimony of 552 witnesses; visited the site of the assassination; and oversaw the writing of the 888-page final report, which was presented to President Johnson on 24 September 1964 and made public three days later. Subsequently, twenty-six additional volumes of testimony and exhibits were printed, making the full Warren Report one of the most voluminous documents about a single episode ever published by the U.S. government.

The commission unanimously concluded that Oswald, acting alone, assassinated President Kennedy, and that Jack Ruby was a self-appointed vigilante when he killed Oswald two days later. Contrary to popular belief, the commission did not conclude definitively that there was no conspiracy. Rather, the panel stated that despite its best efforts, it had been unable to find any evidence of a conspiracy. This finding reflected the commission's recognition that pertinent records in communist bloc countries were beyond its reach.

President Johnson formed the commission to provide a forum for fact-finding (in the absence of a purgative trial) and to prevent competing, televised investigations in Congress. Initially, these goals were achieved. Congress declined to investigate, and upon publication, the Warren Report persuaded most Americans that the truth was known, insofar as it was knowable. Over time, confidence in the commission's probity and the report's validity eroded. The commission, operating as it did in the midst of the Cold War, had to keep some facts secret, and some information was kept from it. None of the revelations that trickled out in the years following the assassination, however, altered the accuracy of the commission's findings. But critics, only some of whom were well-meaning, repeatedly exploited the contradiction between the need for answers and the need for secrecy to suggest that the commission was either incompetent or intentionally avoided the truth. The Warren Commission's reputation also suffered collaterally from later cynicism engendered by the Vietnam War and Watergate scandal.

* * * * * * * * * *

"His story", as this is written, would try to convince the reading public that LBJ was interested in the truth, and the integrity of such a commission. Would almost make you wonder if he didn't start Faux News Network with the idea of 'fair and balanced'. Where is the balance to Earl Warren? Oh, right--the stoolie, the stumbling, bumbling Gerald R. Ford!

Sheesh.....

But take a look....... Boggs--a Louisiana Democrat--Louisiana being one of, if not THE, most corrupt political entity in Los Estatos Unitos!! And Allen Dulles, and McCloy--all government hacks!

So who is this Cooper guy? I know next to nothing about Russell--reckon I never cared to know, other than there is a DC legislative building named after him.

2 people who were doubters, resisters initially, but who eventually were "persuaded" by ??? to acquiesce to Congressman Ford's points of view.

Gerald Rudolph Ford, Jr. (July 14, 1913 – December 26, 2006) was the thirty-eighth President of the United States, serving from 1974 to 1977, and the fortieth Vice President of the United States serving from 1973 to 1974. He was the first person appointed to the vice presidency under the terms of the 25th Amendment, "and became President upon Richard Nixon's resignation on August 9, 1974." Ford was the fifth U.S. President never to have been elected to that position, and the only one never to have won a national election at all."

Now note, Nixon was run of town by the Jew, Felt, as deep throat. Felt wanted Hoovers job, Nixon said no, so Ford became president. Being a "mole" for FBI does pay off. When the voters had a choice, Ford was thrown out.

Gerald Ford was so close to Hoover that he served as the FBI director's informant while he was on the Warren Commission. This is confirmed by an internal FBI memo of Dec. 12, 1963. Written to Hoover by his deputy Cartha DeLoach, it says: "Ford indicated he would keep me thoroughly advised as to the activities of the commission. He stated that would have to be done on a confidential basis; however, he thought it had to be done." The Washington Post disclosed the memo in 1991. Newsweek had earlier described Ford as "the CIA's best friend in Congress."

Thanks for that great sleuth work, Dee! The Kennedy assassination was a bit before my time so I'm afraid I know little about the event and the players except for the official gubment story that's written in school textbooks. I've read about some of the alternative Kennedy assassination theories since then on the 'net, but I can't say I've ever researched the matter deeply on my own.

However, now my curiosity is really really piqued with the revelations about Prez Ford - to think that I actually defended him when other posters slammed him at his death - brother, how naive I was then - so I'll need to get myself up to speed on the Kennedy assassination and Warren Commission cover up before I can do any "informed" posting on the subject. Thanks again for giving me some clues, dee!

And Allen Dulles, and McCloy--all government hacks!

Not just political hacks ... these two were thoroughbred NAZIS. Dulles brought them (nazis) into the U.S. under a variety of acts such as Operation Paper Clip and McCloy freed them from prisons after their convictions at Nuremburg, as he was the Commissioner in Europe overseeing the trials.

Both Dulles and Bush were Skull and Bonesmen. The Dulles bros were intimately involved in Kennedy's murder as was Bush, Nixon, Hoover, LBJ and McCloy.
