George Bush squares up to Vladimir Putin over Georgia

Tom Baldwin in Washington

In full: George Bush's statement | Journalist in brush with death | Ethnic violence warning | Text of the ceasefire agreement

President Bush dispatched US military hardware to the heart of the Caucasus yesterday and warned Russia that it could be frozen out of international bodies as punishment for its aggression in Georgia.

In his toughest criticism of Russia since becoming President, Mr Bush accused it of breaching the provisional ceasefire agreed with Georgia only 24 hours earlier.

He cited intelligence showing that Russian troops had again taken the town of Gori and could threaten the capital, Tbilisi. He insisted that Moscow respect the former Soviet republic’s territorial integrity. There were also reports of Russian-backed militia in South Ossetia looting ethnic Georgian villages and killing inhabitants.

“To begin to repair the damage to its relations with the United States, Europe and other nations, and to begin restoring its place in the world, Russia must keep its word and act to end this crisis,” Mr Bush said.

The US is holding talks with its allies, including Britain, about whether to suspend Russia’s prized membership of the G8 club of industrialised nations. There is a growing clamour to block Russia from becoming part of the World Trade Organisation and to rescind an invitation for it to join the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Mr Bush’s statement, delivered in stern tones outside the White House, was significantly stronger than that made last week, when his cautious comments reflected the State Department’s unhappiness with Georgia’s use of force against pro-Russian separatist rebels in South Ossetia.

Although direct military intervention is not being considered, Pentagon sources have hinted that a limited number of troops could be deployed to support what Mr Bush described as a vigorous and ongoing humanitarian mission headed by the US military.

The first US air force transport aircraft had already arrived last night Mr Bush said that more would follow. Meanwhile, the navy was heading to the Black Sea – at present controlled by Russian warships – to deliver humanitarian and medical supplies direct to Georgian ports. “We expect Russia to honour its commitment to let in all forms of humanitarian assistance,” Mr Bush said. “We expect Russia to ensure that all lines of communication and transport, including seaports, airports, roads and air space, remain open for the delivery of humanitarian assistance and civilian transit.”

President Saakashvili of Georgia seized on the announcement to say that Tbilisi airport and Poti port would be placed under US military control, a claim the Pentagon swiftly denied.

Condoleezza Rice, the US Secretary of State, was flying to France last night to meet President Sarkozy, who led EU efforts to broker peace, before heading to Tbilisi.

The Georgian President had accused the US of failing to stand up for liberty and of squandering its support among former Soviet republics. Western diplomats say that they have limited room for manoeuvre and little leverage against a Kremlin in which, they say, the strings are still being pulled by Vladimir Putin, the former President. The most likely sanctions are those that would damage Russia’s prestige.

Mr Bush said: “Russia has sought to integrate into the diplomatic, political, economic and security structures of the 21st century. Now Russia is putting its aspirations at risk by taking actions in Georgia that are inconsistent with the principles of those institutions.”

David Miliband, the Foreign Secretary, said that the EU should reassess plans for a partnership agreement with Russia. “We’ve got to make sure that the Russians realise that they do have rights in the international system but they must be allied with responsibilities,” he said. “And when responsibilities are not upheld, there are political consequences.”

John McCain, the Republican presidential nominee, reiterated his hard-line call for Russia to be thrown out of the G8 because it had failed to maintain democratic reforms. Barack Obama, the Democratic nominee, has been more cautious.

Richard Holbrooke, the former US Ambassador to the United Nations, has called for the West to reconsider participation at the 2014 Winter Olympics, which Russia plans to host in Sochi, 25 miles from the war zone.

For the time being, measures being taken have been limited to a US boycott of a Nato meeting with a Russian delegation and the likely cancellation of a joint naval exercise.

Contrast this lightning-fast "humanitarian" effort with the glacial response to Katrina. I don't think the Chimp responded at all to that for nearly a week. He was on vacation partying with McStrangelove when it hit.

If it's really true that some African-American mercs/SFs were among those killed by the Russians over the weekend, I've just got to say they were just too stupid to go on breathing. Darwin Award winners extraordinaire.

JOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOS! LOL ;-)

Now, lets see, if you are correct, how can anyone make sense of this affair with Georgia??????

Perhaps we could also start with the concept that those doing the bleeding and dying by and large are NOT Jews?

Now with our thoughts together, things fall apart, Israel/Jews backing Georgia Jews...American Jews backing Georgia Jews...Russian Jews with Christian soldiers doing the killing. Jew from France arrives as peacemaker.

Do I detect same dirty hands at top pulling ALL the strings or am I just an olde Cynic????

Buck...

The actual people working the strings are never seen nor heard about by the unwashed masses.

I would say however that Bush, Putin and Sakorzy know them by name.

In twenty years untold "Russians" have gone from nothing to multi billionaires. I believe all but one are Jews. Under Communism, the State owned everything, now they have a few oligarchs that own everything in a few short years. It is a true success story, unless one considers they merely traded their communist banners for capitalist banners. Same people.

This quote from one of their members.

"As Vladimir Potanin, one of their number, disingenuously remarked, ordinary Russians may find it hard to understand how any single Russian, no matter how hard-working, can have honestly amassed billions of dollars in the few years since the collapse of the Soviet Union, given that the Russians all had the same starting position: which was, roughly, on the Zero line. "

The powers of population control/world governance have used 'Israel'/'Jew' as a cover for all their house of horrors. Israel/Jews are no better or worse than anyone else.

It's the PTB and the traitors who de construct America on their behalf - NAMES!

Israel, Russia, America, (most of) Europe, Australia, etc. are ALL in the hands of the currency makers.

What's their NAMES?! Who are THEIR HAND MAIDENS IN OUR GOVERNMENT?! IN OUR MEDIA? IN THE 'THINK TANKS' and "SECRET ELITE CLUBS"?? AT the Universities? Etc.

WHO EXACTLY are they? Rockefellers? Rothschilds? Warburgs? Schiffs? Bushes? ???

The Jews hate Putin, though, because he repatriated a lot of the assets they stole under Yeltsin.

Most of the "oligarchs" (who are overwhelmingly Jewish) are now in exile in either the UK or Israel.

Think Bush might follow his excellent example ? [Just kiddin].

"Gentlemen," concluded Napoleon, "I will give you the same toast as before, but in a different form. Fill your glasses to the brim. Gentlemen, here is my toast: To the prosperity of The Manor Farm! "

There was the same hearty cheering as before, and the mugs were emptied to the dregs. But as the animals outside gazed at the scene, it seemed to them that some strange thing was happening. What was it that had altered in the faces of the pigs? Clover's old dim eyes flitted from one face to another. Some of them had five chins, some had four, some had three. But what was it that seemed to be melting and changing? Then, the applause having come to an end, the company took up their cards and continued the game that had been interrupted, and the animals crept silently away.

Somewhere months ago I read of massive amounts of money being transferred OUT of Russia but all in secret with no names attached.

When the Soviet Union collapsed, the people had nothing, but a handful of vultures picked the carcass clean.

I recall untold billions this country gave to Russia after the collapse. All justified as humanitarian aid. The people still have nothing.

Today, as I was treadmilling, I had CSPAN on and there was an American Enterprise Institute panel discussion going on about the Russian - Georgia 'war'.

A fellow named Peters, I believe, who is one of our retired military officers was having a fit. He nailed Arbusto as being so unconcerned as to attend a basketball game while Russian was doing this; and he said that the WARLORD Obama was on the beach in Hawaii.....so much for the us response.

He went on to say that we have consistently sent messages to newly formed country governments that are supposed to be our allies that we really don't give a damn. He named (crap, I can't remember for sure but I think he said) Hungary, in the 50s, and then the Iraqi resistance agaisnt Hussein--and how when they formed then we turned our back and they were annihalated by Hussein; and that we have now done the same thing to Georgia. This guy was really livid/angry/pissed.

While the events of the past immediately after the Soviet Union's demise may be true, I think Putin has helped Russia immensely to enjoy a turn around in fortune and he personally has put it on a forward path - Russia's economy grew 7% I read - so all Russians in the future may soon actually enjoy a future with a decent life style. Of course, Putin couldn't solve all of Russia's post communist bad baggage all at once, but I think Putin has given ordinary Russians hope for a better tomorrow.

Everything I read on the net suggests that Putin is adored by the majority of Russians - quite literally most of the Russians on the street love Putin, they see him as a savior of sorts - they're probably right - without Putin in power the past few years, Russia might have continued on its serious nose dive, with no end in sight - if there had been no electoral rules in place forbidding Putin from running for yet another term as President, and he had put himself on the ballot again for President, Putin would have won by a landslide and I don't mean a Uncle Saddam style of landslide.

One of the first major good things Putin did was applying the full force of Russian law to bear on the high-handed criminal theft of Russia's riches by the small group of oligarchs. Putin pulled a type of Elliott Ness move against the Russian Oligarch Mafia using existing laws on the books ( not brute force) to trip them up. Pretty smart, I'd say. Some of the oligarchs were caught and put on trial and jailed and the rest fled to London or Tel Aviv and claimed "asylum."

It will be a long journey for Russia but I think all signs are in place for a continued ascension to a level of First World economic power status. I think it still lags in the military power category because Putin has focused on Russia's economy, and I'm not sure that the new Russia is even to interested in spending all the $ it takes to challenge America in that area. Certainly after the Georgia betrayal, now Medvedev-Putin will make sure that Russia has "enough" military modern tech know how and trained human resources and prowess to defend itself and its neighborhood from poachers and encroachers.

Peters: Sarkozy landing in Paris with a piece of paper guaranteeing 'peace in our time'.

The phrase "peace for our time" was spoken on 30 September 1938 by British prime minister Neville Chamberlain in his speech concerning the Munich Agreement

Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.”—Samuel Adams

Oh grog, gack, barf - I recognize 2 PNAC names from the list.

There's good old reliable shill, Ralphie Peters - he uses his military background to make it seem as though he is an AmericaFirster even though his loyalty lies elsewhere.

Then there's Frederick Kagan. He's even worse than Ralph in his unstated agenda and his elsewhere loyalties. I think it was Freddy computer commando chickenhawk Kagan who was the architect of the T.H.E. surge in Iraq. Nice. Here we have a person, Freddy Kagan, who has not served 1 day in combat or for that matter has ever been in the military period, who is the "architect" of a war policy that the WH and Congress implements and funds. Sheesh.

The other 2 guys I have not heard of before but I suspect they both march along to the AEI/PNAC tune...choruses praising perpetual war...

Evil as he was, Hitler knew weak men when I saw them and that included Stalin.

Reason being that Hitler clawed his way up from the bottom.

The others, Chamberlain, Churchill, Daladier, Roosevelt and Stalin arrived at the top by reason of birth and status or by force.

As I listened to Hamilton, I knew he was there in Georgia; he gave a rundown of their military (???) prowess. He explained that we had trained their forces for handling duties in Iraq, but did not give them the training to be able to stand up to Russia.

I thought he was a propagandameister.

Likewise, I thought that with the Peters guy. Soon as he lambasted arbusto and obama with no likewise nailing of mchurian, I knew I was to consider him suspect.

Soon as I was done with the treadmill, I turned it off, so I didn't get to hear the last guy. I honestly can't recall anything the first guy said, but then I wasn't really trying to listen to that--it was just something on the tube to take away from the agony of the treadmill routine. :)
