I went to Hubbard Park in Meriden, CT to eat lunch and take some photos. Here are two birds that I've never seen before:

This bird looks like this one. Unfortunately, no mention is made of the breed.

This specimen is larger than a Canadian Goose.

The other bird that I saw is not a water fowl.

Can anyone identify them? (5 images)

Close, but the orange coloration isn't there, so I don't think that's it.

Domestic Swan Goose (Anser cygnoides)

Another species of goose that has been domesticated is the Swan Goose, native to eastern Eurasia and sometimes called a Chinese goose. A domestic swan goose usually has a large knob at the base of the bill (the wild form lacks this). It also can show a white patch behind the bill. It varies from wild type coloring (mostly gray with a dark line down the back of the otherwise white neck) to pure white.

Domestic Geese: The African Goose

African geese are not from Africa! They are the same colour as the Chinese goose, and originated in SE China. They were imported into the USA in the nineteenth century, and reached Britain too as the 'Hong Kong' goose in Victorian times. Good examples of the African were more or less lost in the UK in the 20th century. Most Africans here now come from birds imported from the USA from the 1970s onwards. Exhibition Africans are imposing birds, ganders standing one metre tall. Hand reared, they are very tame. There is a great deal of variation in weight. Some varieties are quite small, reaching only 16-20 lbs. Big exhibition birds in the UK and the USA reach 26 lbs - the same as their stated weight in SE China.

African Goose

The African goose is a massive bird. Its heavy body, thick neck, stout bill and jaunty posture give the impression of strength and vitality. Its name is not indicative of its place of origin. Historical studies show that the African has been known by many names, and its origin has been attributed to many continents. It seems to have arrived in North America on ships that traveled around the world so its exact origin is ambiguous (Johnson, et.al., 1909). It is known, however, that the African is a relative of the Chinese goose, both having descended from the wild swan goose native of Asia (Holderread, 1986). The physical differences between the substantial African and the lithe Chinese goose demonstrate the effect of selective breeding.
