I went to Hubbard Park in Meriden, CT to eat lunch and take some photos. Here are two birds that I've never seen before:

This bird looks like this one. Unfortunately, no mention is made of the breed.

This specimen is larger than a Canadian Goose.

The other bird that I saw is not a water fowl.

Can anyone identify them? (5 images)

Is this bird native to US?

Since you've ID the bird, I searched and found that these bird might be useful for controlling Lyme disease (seems improbable to me, but they are in CT).

Is there some CT state program to put these birds into the wild as controls? Don't know. Have no info on this.

Thanks for the ID.

Found this about Guinea Fowl:

www.beardsleyzoo.org/teac...ents/animal.asp?mc_id=110

The guinea fowl roam the Zoo grounds looking for tasty insects. One of their favorites is Japanese beetles and a second is ticks! Their two "hang-outs" are near the Rainforest and in the New England Farmyard.

There are six species of guinea fowl in Africa. One can also be found in Madagascar and other Indian Ocean Islands. The ones scurrying around the Zoo are the west African subspecies - Numida meleagris galeata. These helmeted guinea fowl are the most widely distributed of guinea fowl and have been domesticated since the time of the Romans.

I'm guessing that they were imported.

Top one is a Swan Goose.

I don't know for sure offhand, I'm guessing a goose of some sort? Should be listed here:

Edit: oops, didn't see the post of wudidiz above mine before I posted, I was searching.

Close, but the orange coloration isn't there, so I don't think that's it.

Domestic Swan Goose (Anser cygnoides)

Another species of goose that has been domesticated is the Swan Goose, native to eastern Eurasia and sometimes called a Chinese goose. A domestic swan goose usually has a large knob at the base of the bill (the wild form lacks this). It also can show a white patch behind the bill. It varies from wild type coloring (mostly gray with a dark line down the back of the otherwise white neck) to pure white.

Thank you!

I'm very surprised that this bird is domestic.

I searched for an hour before I posted about this bird.

I guess that the orange coloration is variable.

Again, thanks.

I enjoy waterfowl identification and it was quite a challenge. Domesticated and hybrids were last on my list.

You're very welcome of course.

Seems there are alot of variations in the domestic version.

I don't know if CT has a program to release guinea hens to control deer ticks (thus controlling Lyme Disease) but I do know that a lot of CT residents are raising flocks for that very reason. I considered it when I live in CT, but I lived in an area thick with coyotes, and I would have just been providing easy pickings for the varmints.

I shall not vote for evil, lesser or otherwise.

Domestic Geese: The African Goose

African geese are not from Africa! They are the same colour as the Chinese goose, and originated in SE China. They were imported into the USA in the nineteenth century, and reached Britain too as the 'Hong Kong' goose in Victorian times. Good examples of the African were more or less lost in the UK in the 20th century. Most Africans here now come from birds imported from the USA from the 1970s onwards. Exhibition Africans are imposing birds, ganders standing one metre tall. Hand reared, they are very tame. There is a great deal of variation in weight. Some varieties are quite small, reaching only 16-20 lbs. Big exhibition birds in the UK and the USA reach 26 lbs - the same as their stated weight in SE China.

African Goose

The African goose is a massive bird. Its heavy body, thick neck, stout bill and jaunty posture give the impression of strength and vitality. Its name is not indicative of its place of origin. Historical studies show that the African has been known by many names, and its origin has been attributed to many continents. It seems to have arrived in North America on ships that traveled around the world so its exact origin is ambiguous (Johnson, et.al., 1909). It is known, however, that the African is a relative of the Chinese goose, both having descended from the wild swan goose native of Asia (Holderread, 1986). The physical differences between the substantial African and the lithe Chinese goose demonstrate the effect of selective breeding.
