ORLANDO, Fla. – Democrat Barack Obama challenged Republican opponent John McCain on Tuesday to stop questioning his "character and patriotism."

Addressing the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention, Obama reaffirmed his early opposition to the U.S. invasion of Iraq and said the so-called "surge" strategy of sending 30,000 additional troops to Iraq last year had not produced the political reconciliation necessary to achieve lasting peace in the country. McCain supported the Iraq invasion and was an early champion of the surge.

"These are the judgments I've made and the policies that we have to debate, because we do have differences in this election," Obama said. "One of the things that we have to change in this country is the idea that people can't disagree without challenging each other's character and patriotism. I have never suggested that Sen. McCain picks his positions on national security based on politics or personal ambition. I have not suggested it because I believe that he genuinely wants to serve America's national interest. Now, it's time for him to acknowledge that I want to do the same.

"Let me be clear: I will let no one question my love of this country," Obama said to applause.

McCain stood before the same audience a day earlier and said Obama "tried to legislate failure" in the Iraq war and had put his ambition to be president above the interests of the United States. He said the Illinois senator did this by pushing for a timetable for withdrawal of U.S. combat troops from Iraq and by voting in the Senate against a major appropriations bill to help fund the troop increase.

Responding to Obama's comments, McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds said: "Barack Obama has made it clear that unconditional withdrawal in Iraq is more important to him than victory in Iraq. That's not a criticism of his patriotism, that's a criticism of his judgment."

A decorated Vietnam war veteran and member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Arizona Sen. McCain has sharply questioned whether the 47-year-old Obama has the experience and character necessary to serve as commander in chief.

McCain also has spoken out strongly against Russia's invasion of the Republic of Georgia, using Obama's absence from the campaign trail last week when he was on vacation in Hawaii to take a hard line against the Russian government. His tough talk led some of Obama's foreign policy advisers to suggest McCain may have complicated the conflict.

Obama strongly condemned Russia's actions Tuesday but said the U.S. involvement in Iraq had imperiled its ability to take a leadership role in the matter.

"We failed to head off this conflict and lost leverage in our ability to contain it because our leaders have been distracted, our resources overstretched, and our alliances frayed," Obama said.

The Illinois senator also praised Joseph Biden, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman thought to be among the top contenders to be Obama's running mate, for calling for an additional $1 billion for reconstruction projects in Georgia.

stop questioning his "character and patriotism."

Fair enough in my view. McKooK was no hero.

Therefore, IF Obummer wants to show character and patriotism, I would suggest he enlist in the Army as a Private (character) and volunteer for 6 months Iraq duty (patriotism).

Then Mouth McKooK would have to shut up.

And why must the US take a "leadership role" in anything?

More importantly, if the Iraq war has degraded the options you would choose, just what kind of "options" are you thinking about in the first place? Maybe attaining what Kosovo Clark couldn't at Pristina?

Err, he's too old and would be a PFC or Specialist at the lowest rank if he was of age and could. A college education really gives you a leg up over anyone else if you enlist with one.

POJ...

The above little clip, Obummer is talking about the 100,000 more grunts he wants for the Army.

Surely when he becomes President, men will be standing in line to fill the ranks, wont they????

Dont you make fun of the lower ranks. Not nice.

Believe me, I'm not making fun of the lower ranks. I myself started as a private E-1 and made Sergeant E-5 two years and three months later (early seventies).

We had a PFC in basic (BCT) who was kicked out for lying about a physical profile in BCT who came on board at that rank because of his college education.

Having an education isn't anything if one has no real interity.

Ranks... PRIVATE...PRIVATE FIRST CLASS...CORPORAL...ETC ETC...

Ok so far????

I was such a disgraceful soldier that they called me PNC...A Private with NO Class...

I made it a four year career to make Uncle Sam pay every day, one way or another.

Went two years without wearing a uniform, sold mine for $60 to a lifer. Beer money.

Uncle Sam stole four of the best years of my life and I made him pay as much as possible.

If only a fourth of the white guilters who are cheerleading for him will sign up he should be able to get more than enough. As for the quality, well, I don't imagine that would be too great but he would have plenty of them, or so it appears.

What is rather difficult to accept is that the 100,000 man increase was made by Bush in his state of the Union message. Not a word of complaint or interest by anyone.

Now along comes Obama with "change" in mind saying he will do the same as Bush and not a peep from anyone. Odd. Almost as if it makes no difference who is president.

Other than skin color there is so little difference between Obama and McCain--and you can throw Bush in too--that it is laughable when people actually think they have some big decision to make when it is between establishment annointed clowns. And those people who really run things don't care if the sheeple vote for McCain or Obama because they control both of them.* People have been dumbed down in the government schools to the point they can't think, at least too many of them have.

I don't know why people can't accept the reality that stares them in the face day after day. Some combination of willful ignorance and cognitive dissonance I guess.
