i have a little sony mini DV recorder, which can be bought for a few hundred bucks or less, the quality is good and can be uploaded to the computer with a cable. it uses small MINI DV cassetts. some people prefer the digital which record onto the hard drive, (they cost more) but i think the mini dv is fine. the quality is just fine.
