Police: Coach Told Player to Harm Disabled 8-Year-Old Teammate

By Allison Schlesinger Associated Press Writer
Published: Jul 15, 2005

PITTSBURGH (AP) - A T-ball coach allegedly paid one of his players $25 to hurt an 8-year-old mentally disabled teammate so he wouldn't have to put the boy in the game, police said Friday.

Mark R. Downs Jr., 27, of Dunbar, is accused of offering one of his players the money to hit the boy in the head with a baseball, police said. Witnesses told police Downs didn't want the boy to play in the game because of his disability.

Police said the boy was hit in the head and in the groin with a baseball just before a game, and did not play, police said.

"The coach was very competitive," state police Trooper Thomas B. Broadwater said. "He wanted to win."

Downs has an unpublished telephone number and could not immediately be reached for comment Friday. It was unclear whether he had an attorney.

He was arrested and arraigned Friday on charges including criminal solicitation to commit aggravated assault and corruption of minors. He was released from jail on an unsecured bond.

The alleged assault happened June 27 in North Union Township, about 40 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, authorities said.

The boy's mother asked state police to investigate her son's injuries because she suspected Downs wanted to keep the boy off the field, despite a league rule that required each player to participate in three innings a game, Broadwater said.

Eric Forsythe, the president of the R.W. Clark Youth Baseball League, said Downs had two daughters on the T-ball team.

League organizers investigated accusations against Downs before the T-ball season ended earlier this month but could not prove that he did anything wrong. If Downs is convicted of any crime, he won't be allowed to be a coach next year, Forsythe said. The league is not affiliated with Little League International.

Over a freaking T-Ball game? Most leagues don't even allow keeping score at the T-Ball level.

Yet another posterchild for "I'll do anything to win" crowd. What a fucking loser. If I was the disabled kid's dad, I'd put my foot in this dude's ass. What a fucking loser.

He probably posts at CP, or LP too.

So many morons, so few bullets.

Oh, for crying out loud. I was a t-ball coach for two years, and while it WAS pretty competitive, there was never ANYTHING like that. This guy is a sociopath. Both years, BTW, I had the Bad News Bears teams and both years, we were undefeated. Which is not THAT big a deal in T-ball since there are a lot of ties, but still, I was proud of my kids.

No, the coach was a fucking sicko who wanted to hurt little, disabled kids to make himself look like Pete Rose or somebody.

He should be punished severely, and I suspect if word of this leaks out while he's serving his sentence, he'll get the shit kicked out of him for it.

That was my first thought as well.

IMO? He's just like BTK, Ted Bundy and all the rest.. only to a lesser extent.

It's all about him and his glory. His personal enjoyment.

That's a pretty frightening concept, isn't it?

You're right..

And likewise, what sacres me about that is it indicates (to me, anyway) that there's people out there yanking the levers of power who are the moral equal of our favorite T-Ball "Coach" above.

That's exactly the point I was trying to make..

At a Billion Dollars a week, we could ammend the Constitution, re-appropriate the money and end up with .44444 Government subsidized lap dances per year, for every man, woman and child in the US.

(Even more, if we un plug some old people who wouldn't enjoy them anyway.)

(I'll be sure to smear someone unimportant and fire them for my oversight)

.4444 per week!

Think of the savings!

Baseball Coach to Stand Trial on Charges of Paying Player to Hit a Disabled Boy With a Ball

The Associated Press
Published: Jul 28, 2005

UNIONTOWN, Pa. (AP) - A youth baseball coach Thursday was ordered to stand trial on charges he offered one of his players $25 to hit a 9-year-old mentally retarded teammate in the face with a ball.

Keith Reese, 8, testified at a preliminary hearing that Mark R. Downs Jr. made him the offer before a playoff game June 27.

Keith said he had a warm-up catch with teammate Harry Bowers and hit him in the groin with his first toss. As the boy walked away, the coach "told me to go out there and hit him harder," Keith said. "So I went out and hit him in the ear."

The boy was not seriously hurt.

The boy's mother told police that the coach had been looking for ways to keep her son out of games because he was not as good as other youngsters.

Downs, 27, faces charges that include conspiracy, corruption of minors and soliciting an assault.

Downs' attorney, Thomas W. Shaffer, denied the allegations.

Heck, it's just a game, and most who participate in sporting activities are semi-retarded anyways.
