Police Bust Thru Attic To Detain "Democracy Now" Journalist

TheUptake reporting.

Added: August 30, 2008 (Less info) More at http://www.theuptake.org A live stream from The UpTake's Chuck Olsen as police in St. Paul conduct preemptive raids on people planning to protest at the Republican National Convention this week.

Note: this is a recording of a live video stream.

Elizabeth Press is a producer with "Democracy Now" and is in St. Paul to help the group "iwitness Video" document any police abuses during the Republican National Convention.

She was staying in a house on Iglehart in St. Paul (949 Iglehart) She says a Federal agent came to the door this morning and asked for someone named Fred who was involved with a bike ride a few months ago and they wanted to question him. He said it wasn't related to the Republican National Convention. He then left. The iwitness video group decided then to move from the house because they felt their meeting wasn't safe.

Around 1pm about 20 St. Paul police officers surrounded the house. A few of the group went outside and were handcuffed. They had to wait for the search warrant to arrive. When the warrant arrived, it was not for their house. It was for the apartment next door. Police went into that other apartment and then busted through the attic into where the journalists were.

"They came in with pistols drawn" said Press " I was pointing my video camera back. They said 'St. Paul Police, put your hands on your head' and then we were all detained for the next several hours in the back yard.

Police then searched the journalists' belongings, unhandcuffed them and let them go.

"I feel like these are intimidation tactics. iwitness video has been in the news recently, in the New York Times and all over the internet. Their video work has gotten over 400 people's charges dropped from the National Republican Convention in New York City and they are going to be here today and through out the week to document police behaviors at the 2008 Republican National Convention.

Three members of the group were biking away from the home at the time of the raid and were detained by police on the sidewalk. All of their belongings were searched. They went through their maps, their notes and wrote things down after viewing the notes. The police had riot gear and tasers.

One of the group members said she asked the St. Paul police how far they have to be away from somebody to shoot a taser. The police officer told her they can be any distance. She had heard that if you're too close they can be fatal or cause heart attacks.

She also said she doesn't know if they were targeted because they are with iwitness or because of the house they are staying in, or something totally different.

Political Activists Say They Are Not Terrorists

The Welcoming Committee... (Less info) More at http://www.theuptake.org. The RNC Welcoming Committee, an "anarchist/anti-authoritarian organizing body" which provided logistical support to individuals protesting RNC08 in St. Paul, gave a rare press conference on the morning of 9/4/08. The organizers of the group says they have maintained a policy of not speaking to the press until now. Group member Celia Kutz says they can no longer remain silent because Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher has targeted the group

"It's become personal" says Kutz.

Eight members of the group have been charged with conspiracy and acts of terrorism.

"There are no terrorists on this stage. There are no terrorists in the Ramsey County Jail," added Kutz

RNC Eve: Police Seize Sustainable Living Bus

Added: August 31, 2008 (Less info)
More at http://www.theuptake.org. Delyla Wilson tours the country with her family in the "PermiBus," a mobile permaculture demonstration. The group is in the Twin Cities to teach people about sustainable living practices.

On the evening of Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008 the bus was pulled over in what police eventually described as a routine traffic stop. After detaining the bus occupants, the police decided the bus was a commercial vehicle and impounded it for inspection, leaving the family and their guests stranded and homeless.

The police allowed the Wilsons to remove their dogs and chickens, but were not allowed to retrieve their computers or any other belongings, including their daughter's shoes.

This incident ended a day that saw multiple pre-RNC raids, which some legal observers believe is a coordinated pre-emptive effort by local and national law enforcement agencies to chill RNC protest action. Thanks to the right wing nut jobs running this country we no longer live in the land of the free and the home of the brave. This is what happens when we allow the government to take our civil rights in order to protect us. Sarah Palin made fun of the fact the suprem court said people in custody of the U.S gov have the right to have their rights read. she said Obama cares more about terrorist than our safety, when we loose our rights we have nothing. Huh.

Lesser of two evils disease. Sadly it infects everyone.

Edit: I saw on another forum where Palin tried to have books removed from the library because of the objectionable content. When the librarian wouldn't comply she tried to have her fired. If she is this fascist then she is the perfect match for McCain. Fascism, communism, it's all government control. Evil is evil. The elites win no matter what.

Main issues for me is that they assumed this was a terrorist outfit's mode of transportation (seizing private property) and that inter-agency cooperation spelled greater efficiency in the suppression of rights.

This would happen under Obama, too - especially if we were out at his convention appearance in 2012 protesting his leniency on illegal immigrants.

Palin asked librarian Mary Ellin Baker to remove certain volumes due to objectionable language and when Baker balked, the mayor tried to get the librarian herself removed from her post. The Origin of Species was presumably on the list of offensive tomes, since Palin, a fierce sceptic vis-à-vis "the theory" of evolution, supports the teaching of creationism in the schools.

For those of you who live in a country where the Enlightenment hasn't been repealed, creationism is the pseudo science that attempts to reconcile the fossil record with the biblical account of creation. Also known as "a breath of fresh air". John McCain's choice of a running mate was certainly bold and unexpected, in keeping with his maverick reputation. It was also cynical and sexist, insofar as it was designed to attract disaffected Hillary supporters

That's going to leave a mark. What is the JBS saying about Palin?

Massive Mass Media @ RNC - Watch more funny videos here

Massive Mass Media (the Uptake)

UT reporting 15k journalists (not all theirs) at the convention!

More at http://www.theuptake.org More than 15,000 media people are expected to invade St. Paul, Minnesota starting at the end of July to cover the Republican National Convention which is in September. Today media representatives got to look at how the convention will be set up. The UpTake’s Mike McIntee went along to watch the media. It’s interesting that as local media organizations try to trim expenses, the number of press attending the RNC is increasing. Four years ago there were 5,000 radio people covering the RNC. This year there will be more than 7,000 radio people broadcasting from the Xcel. One RNC spokesperson I talked to said that an increased interest by the foreign press in US politics may be the reason behind the increase. If you’re blogger and planning to rely on wireless to cover the RNC, better come up with another plan. With so many people using cell phones and wireless, it is very likely any network you use may not work reliably. One radio engineer I spoke with today was disappointed that the RNC had not yet assigned spaces on “Radio Row”, making planning for radio stations a bit more difficult. By the numbers:The media will occupy 450,000 square feet during the convention. The convention is using more than 100 hotels in the Twin Cites. Total attendance at the convention (delegates, alternates, volunteers, media and other guests) is expected to be about 45,000. «Less
