Noonan, Murphy trash Palin on hot mike: 'It's over'

Ben Smith

Wed Sep 3, 5:24 PM ET

After a segment with NBC's Chuck Todd ended today, Republican consultant Mike Murphy and Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan were caught on a live mike ridiculing the choice of Sarah Palin.

"It's over," said Noonan, who then responded to a question of whether Palin is the most qualified Republican woman McCain could have chosen.

"The most qualified? No. I think they went for this — excuse me — political bullshit about narratives," she said. "Every time the Republicans do that, because that's not where they live and it's not what they're good at, they blow it."

Murphy chimed in:

"The greatness of McCain is no cynicism, and this is cynical."

Noonan's blunt call contrasted with her conflicted column today saying Palin "could become a transformative political presence."

"The Sarah Palin choice is really going to work, or really not going to work," Noonan wrote. "It's not going to be a little successful or a little not; it's not going to be a wash. She is either going to be magic or one of history's accidents. She is either going to be brilliant and groundbreaking, or will soon be the target of unattributed quotes by bitter staffers shifting blame in all 'The Making of the President 2008' books."

Peggy, you're becoming a pundit sqwerter.

Leave it alone, and see how it plays out.

It will be interesting to see what McCain has to say - if anything - about this one.

He's smart enough to ignore it. He was dumb to do this too extreme and too transparent/cynical tokenism but he won't discuss Noonan. In fact, I read somewhere that he stopped doing the 'straight talk chats' or press conference since early August.

Just watched her for a few minutes on TV giving her speech. Only one way to describe her isto be blunt - a lying, anti-American, hateful, twisted neocon. If America ends up electing McCain and Palin it will be time to look outside the U.S. for a job and move away from this communitarian disaster. Stalin would be proud of the RNC. Every day I keep thinking about Matthew 7...

15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?

17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.

18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:

25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.

26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:

27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

Those were not her words. She was only reading stuff from a teleprompter. It's the work of McCain's speech writer.

Kristol was pushing Palin hard in the McCain camp. It occurred to me, why would a Ron Paulette be getting such the big push from arch neoconservative Kristol?

"The Sarah Palin choice is really going to work, or really not going to work,"

This is very true, but, you either win the election or you don't.

There is no "kinda won" the election just like there is no such thing as being "a little bit pregnant".

"A leader, for a change." - Jimmy Carter, 1976 campaign slogan. Sound familiar? Here it comes again!
