Evangelical faith drives Palin's pro-Israel view

ST. PAUL, Minn. | Sarah Palin displays an Israeli flag in her governor's office in Juneau, even though she has never been to the country, and attends Protestant evangelical churches that consider the preservation of the state of Israel a biblical imperative.

Her faith makes her a favorite with the staunchly pro-Israel neoconservative elements in the Republican Party.

But other Republicans may be concerned that a John McCain-Sarah Palin administration will disregard the caution of former President George H.W. Bush and some of his top advisers and continue the tilt toward Israel.

Most Republicans and conservatives outside Alaska know little about Mrs. Palin's foreign policy views - on Israel or anything else.

But Tucker Eskew, who holds the title of counselor to Mrs. Palin in the McCain-Palin campaign, left no doubt where she stands.

"She would describe herself as a strong supporter of Israel's, with an understanding of Israel's fear of an Iran in possession of nuclear weapons," Mr. Eskew told The Washington Times.

In June, Mrs. Palin told ministry students at her former church that in going to war with Iraq, the United States is "on a task that is from God," the Associated Press reported.

Mrs. Palin's brand of evangelical Protestantism is especially well-disposed to the preservation of Israel for biblical reasons, said Merrill Matthews, an evangelical Christian and a Dallas-based health-policy specialist.

Mrs. Palin was baptized as a teenager at the Wasilla Assembly of God Church. She frequently attends the Juneau Christian Center, which is also part of the Pentecostal Assemblies of God. Her home church is the Church of the Rock, an independent congregation.

"Historically, the Assemblies of God have been dispensationalists, which means they believe in 'the rapture' of Christians that takes them out of the world," said Mr. Matthews. "Central to that position is a very strong support for Israel. It's integral to their view of both prophecy and politics. Denying Israel is almost like denying the faith."

Meanwhile, she is getting rave reviews from Jewish Republicans.

"I think it is very telling that she has a flag of the state of Israel in her office," said Matthews Brooks, executive director of the Republican Jewish Coalition. "That was not inspired by domestic politics, since there is a very small Jewish population in Alaska.

"The fact that she keeps the flag of Israel in her office means she has Israel in her heart," Mr. Brooks said. "I am confident the Jewish community will be impressed with the strong pro-Israel views of Governor Palin as she begins to travel the country and ... discuss the critical issues in this campaign."

On the Democratic side, presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama and his running mate, Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr., while not identifying with neoconservatism, have put themselves solidly in the friends of Israel camp.

"The essence of neoconservatism is the protection of Israel - a shared priority with evangelical Christians," said Paul Erickson, the Republican strategist who managed Pat Buchanan's presidential bid in 1992.

Chief among the McCain campaign's foreign policy advisers known for their neoconservative worldview is Randy Scheunemann, a former aide to Trent Lott and Bob Dole in the Senate.

Other neoconservative foreign policy analysts who have Mr. McCain's ear are former Clinton White House CIA Director R. James Woolsey Jr., who predicted that Iraq's Shi'ite Muslims would flock to support the U.S. in the event of war, and Robert Kagan, a co-founder of the neoconservative Project for the New American Century.

The Republican presidential hopefuls who competed with Mr. McCain earlier this year tended to share the same interventionist approach in foreign policy that is integral to the neoconservative worldview.

"There is an overwhelming presence of neoconservatives and absence of traditional conservatives that I don't know what to make of," said Richard V. Allen, former Reagan White House national security adviser.

In June, Mr. Obama pledged his support before a powerful pro-Israel lobby, though not couched in biblical or religious terms.

"I will do everything in my power to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon," he told the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) in Washington. "Let there be no doubt: I will always keep the threat of military action on the table to defend our security and our ally Israel."

Not to be outdone, Mr. Biden appealed in person to elderly Jewish Floridians on Wednesday.

"I am chairman of the [Senate] Foreign Relations Committee," he said. "I give you my word as a Biden I would not have given up that job to be Barack Obama's vice president if I didn't in my gut and in my heart and in my head know that Barack Obama is exactly where I am on Israel. And he is."

On Monday, Mr. McCain told an AIPAC audience that a meeting with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad would lead to "anti-Semitic rants and a worldwide audience for a man who denies the Holocaust."

I have NO problem with Israel's existence and safety.

I DO have a problem with foreign aid, entangling alliances, foreign lobbyists, domestic lobbyists working for foreign interests and anything that resembles putting America anywhere but first.

What's really sad is the fact that a bible student "KNOWS" that those calling themselves "Israel" today have no ethnic connection to the Israelites led out of Egypt by Moses.

This has not been proven to my satisfaction, and some researchers like Kevin MacDonald claim there is proof that the heredity goes back all the way.. It strikes me as wishful thinking, especially among those who claim they're under the heredity of a "lost tribe" in order to take part in the ethnic supremacism that is inherent in Judaism.

buckeye, i saw an abbreivated version of this info on lewrockwell this morning and thought of you, lol!

isnt it funny, yet sort of sad, how we repubs are finally given someone who looks so normal and a cute woman who grew up in the 80's. hockey mom whose hubby appears to be a blue collar fisherman.. the complete antithesis of the likes of cheney and rumsfeld. this was a brillaiant PR move on the part of mccain's handlers and i admit it does make the whole thing more interesting and entertaining. however i knew all along it was a comical show and although palin may not be outright evil like the rest of them shes still a puppet actress., whether she knows it or not.

sad though how people, some even here, were so EAGER to jump and embrace this person because of her image presented! human nature is eternally hopeful!! the fact that even the most cynical political skeptics liked palin shows innocence and hope. which is cute and sort of sad at the same time.

Yup - she was selected, my best guess, for PR purposes only, and will be "told" when the time comes just where the body is buried, and where hers will be if she doesn't do what she is told.

As well I do not cotton to her dispensationalist theology - which amounts to acquiescing to any evil, no matter how foul, committed by Israel Sodom and Gomorrah because it would interfere with her interpretation of the the misrepresentation of the Christian Scriptures. To be a dispensationalist one must be willing to not oppose evil because it would be evil to oppose that evil because someone else said that God said that it was OK to ignore evil because that is what is required to sucker Jesus into coming back again.

The terrible war between Israel and Palestine known as Intifada II (the second uprising) erupted in September 2000, and has claimed over 2,000 Palestinian lives and almost 600 Israeli lives plus a few from other nations. It is time to name and condemn the responsible parties; this has not been done. Only then can the killing stop. Naming the guilty parties is easy because they have come forward publicly to name themselves. We American have simply not accepted their confession. Perhaps we too are implicated.

The guilty are neither the Palestinian nor the Israeli people, this becomes clear when you talk to both sides. That the American government is the financier of the war is a conclusion understood by just about everyone except the Americans. In my travels in the Mid East I found no one, including schools children, who failed to recognize that the American Government is providing the missiles, and that the war would end without American funding.

But to blame it on our government is shortsighted, for American is a 'Democracy.' This is what the students in Gaza told me. 'Why' they asked 'do you American permit your government to make war on us?'

At the root of the problem is a Christian subculture that has emerged within the American churches, supporting American Zionist leadership and the state of Israel. Without this unholy alliance there would have been no uprisings, because the West Bank and Gaza would not have been Israeli occupied territories. Without this Subculture the war against the Palestinian people, the war against the Afghans, and the currently promoted second war against Iraq would all be unsustainable in the Congress.

Ralph Reed, Chairman of the Georgia Republican Party and former executive director of Pat Robertson's Christian Coalition, and Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein, founder of the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews, have become co%u2011chairmen of a new anti%u2011Islamic hate group called the "Stand For Israel" campaign

The American Israeli Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) is called "American" but it is controlled by Israel. "Stand for Israel" will also be controlled by Israel. (footnote aipac). The "Stand For Israel" campaign has already shown it self to be a hate generating subculture designed to pit Christians against Muslims, and it is led by Israeli patriot Rabbi Eckstein. The Southern Baptist Convention, America's largest evangelical fundamentalist church, has officially declared itself committed to Israel, and at holy war with Islam.

Richard L. Land, a Harvard%u2011educated spokesman for the SBC, and a permanent fixture as head of the powerful Southern Baptist Ethics and Religious Liberties Commission, obviously thinks Southern Baptist ethics do not preclude declaring war on another religion (or race), for he levels his attacks on the Palestinian people as the enemies of Israel%u2011%u2011 some of whom are known to be Baptists! Land stated:

"God made an unconditional covenant (with the present day state of Israel), and he doesn't negotiate. It's God's way or the highway."

Dr. Land does not tell the Palestinians which highway to use or which desert they should march out into, or how they will survive. His interpretation of scripture dictates that each family give up all its worldly property and leave...or die like many already have.

Land continued: "supporting Israel is a matter of being obedient to god."

Dr. Land provides a childish explanation of why Baptists should support genocide against Palestinians; these are the incredible words he publicly proclaimed: "God has blessed them (referring to Arabs), and he will continue to bless them everywhere but Palestine, because God gave Palestine to the descendants of Isaac forever."

Land's logic is not traditional Baptist doctrine. This author is a former Southern Baptist and was for some years a Baptist Deacon. Rather, Lands doctrine can be found in the heretical footnotes of Oxford University Press's own dispensationalist bible, rewritten in 1967, at the time of the Six Day War, and named the Scofield Study Bible. Its impact is discussed in detail in the next chapter. His quotes come almost word-for-word from the Oxford bible's heretical footnotes, composed more than 500 years after the King James Edition was written.

Of course, there is not a shred of historical or genetic evidence to support any of these assumptions. Abraham's DNA has not been found. We would like to ask Dr. Land if he can name his family tree back 3000 years? Worst of all, based upon Dr. Land's (and Rabbi Eckstein's) interpretation someone's bible footnotes, we are supposed to decide who lives and who dies in the Middle East.

Land makes no concession for the Christian Arabs in Palestine, which includes some of my own friends who live in Gaza and belong to the Baptist Church there. Land says they must hit the 'highway" because God gave the land they live on to someone called Jacob who fathered a different tribe. Thus, on account of their race, they must die or starve, even if they are Baptists. How racist can you get? Does this also apply to Arab Jews in Gaza, of whom there are probably some?

In Gaza City, the Baptist church is located between the Library of Culture and Light and the Islamic Center on Omar Mukhter Boulevard. There I met and interviewed three Christian Arab members who consider themselves Baptists. Some of them have already been bombed by the Israelis. One, who asked that I not use his name, (Mr. J.) had to find a new school for his two boys because the Israelis had bombed their school into rubble a few days before I arrived. They used American%u2011made F%u201116s and 500%u2011pound American Smart Bombs.

The Southern Baptist Convention (which started the Gaza City Baptist Church years ago) has tacitly approve of every air raid because they believe the Israelis are of Jacob's seed and the Arabs are of Ishmael's.

Why don't you be honest about where you come from as you rip others' beliefs and how they view God's Word?

Look at it this way. My beliefs are personal. I don't readily share them. My secular philosophy is on display here. If you have a religious problem with it, and I know you do, then bring it on.

However, let us recall the major concerns that many of us have had with Islamic extremism. Their faith has begun to impinge on westerners. Your "faith" as it teaches "you" that "Israel" is sacred impinges on me, because my people are sucked into this mess by people like you who make wild claims about Israel being somehow special in the eyes of God.

Evangelicals have earned every right to be called America's Islamists. And you go along with them to the extent that you make these same claims. How does it feel?

Not that I am a pacifist as I most definitely am not, BUT I also believe that one can only justly use armed force, whether an individual or a State, to defend one's own life, the life of another, or to prevent a crime against an individual or group of individuals. With the exception of a few Sects, such as Jainism, which oppose all force on any grounds or Satanists who worship the gratuitous spilling of blood at their altar, that is a common thread that runs through virtually all religious thinking and philosophy.

Many generations have thought they were the ones that would witness the return of Israel and the end of times. So far none have ... yet God could have a sense of humor and allow this fraud to serve his purposes while demonstrating our propensity to "prefer a lie" to the truth.

Regardless of ones personal beliefs, the scriptures themselves deny any right of return to ashkenazi Jews because they aren't ethnically qualified. They are religious converts as opposed to blood relatives or descendants of Shem and therefore Abraham.

I have read such unfortunately I don't have any links. I have even debated individuals who held to the need to incite Armegeddon and the references to Prophecy supporting their support of allowing evil to fluorish, effectively by not standing in opposition, as a requisite to establish the conditions for the "Rapture" and the Second Coming. That "the Rapture" is nowhere mentioned in Christian Scripture does not seem to faze them.

The 'catching away' or whatever it is precisely called in the Word combined with "God will not pour his wrath out on His church (paraph)" could go either way.

Not one iota of DNA evidence exists that proves modern Jewry descended from Abraham through Jacob (Israel). (Actually no proof has ever been shown to support the removal of the Palestinians in order to "give back" Jersualem to these people calling themselves Jews). And think about this; what other state has been instituted because an invisible god made a secret deal with someones ancestor ??? I'm not interested in arguing about it. I've done a ton of research and satisfied my mind 100%. There could certainly be exceptions since thousands of years have passed and we don't have all of the facts ... but strictly using the Bible it clearly and specifically eliminates descendants of ashkenaz as being entitled to the Abrahamic covenant. That's not my opinion, that's the same bible being used to support the lie. The surprising thing is that those wishing to support the fraud refuse to read the biblical evidence right in front of their eyes. They prefer to believe a lie told by fake Jews and phoney preachers.

I think the proof is in the genetic studies. Right now I'm going with MacDonald's comments on the matter. He studies these things, and has some expertise. Sorry, but the Christian Identity movement is where most of this comes from, and it's pretty lame. They're not the super race (none such exists) and wanting to be one in order to reap God's blessing is just plain wrong.

I'm not an identity Christian. I'm a truth seeker ... I had all of the same notions too, until I did the research.

I'll look at MacDonald's stuff (I probably already have but don't know off hand).

Edit: I'm a serious student looking for the truth ... and the more I learn the less I realize I know. At this moment I'd be hard pressed to say that I trust the entire New Testament ... I don't. I think politics and time have distorted the original New Testament writings.

I think you have to realize that people reach these different conclusions at different times, noone. There is no magic age, or dinger, that suddenly makes everyone who heard the ding 'enlightened ones'.

I daresay it is a safe statement to make that 98% of Americans cannot tell the difference between a Jew and a Zionist, or that there is even a difference. Does that make 98% of our fellow citizens evil, zioniosts, or whatever? Not in my book--it merely means they haven't arrived at whatever conclusion you have, or that I have-- whatever that is.

You know yourself, that as you have read scriptures over time, your understanding becomes clearer and clearer....it has with me, too.

Your argument from antiquity is very difficult to refute with empirical information, since we have so little. However, the Bible does indicate that people living in Palestine at the time of rule of the Romans were Jews, and some Jews today, as far as I know, can claim accurate lineage back to those people. If genetic studies link them to others, then the argument from antiquity is fairly vulnerable.

A legitimate claim would have to made by a Sephardic (Spanish) Jew. When the Romans ran the Jews out of Jerusalem in 70 AD ... they went to Spain. I was talking to someone here the other day and it crossed my mind that as the crops of human beings rotate, the oldies getting tired while at the same time the newbies are being re-oriented (dumbed down) and propagandized continually, the chances of enough people with the necessary awareness to make a change for the better deteriorates a little bit every cycle. About the time we catch on to the enormous fraud that's been perpetrated we're too old and too tired to revolt, while the youth are too busy living to be concerned and too dumbed down to even recognize the highly sophisticated form of slavery being imposed upon them.

The process has become a pageant of actors and actresses that walk the runway, smiling, laughing and waving like someone gives a shit, when in most instances they are merely pretending to be qualified statesmen/states-women with the American people's interests in mind.

The citizenry have become like clapping seals that bark and clap as the media pundits throw them little slices of spin like fishes. In the current atmosphere it seems unlikely to me that an informed consensus is even possible, and the odds decrease as the senior generation passes on and the new one arrives only to be kept confused and less informed.

Without a "catalyzing event" of major import such as a direct attack upon the U.S., a nuclear attack somewhere in the world, or a worldwide famine things will degenerate incrementally just like they have for the past 2 centuries.

I think it will take an enormous calamity to get Americans and others worldwide on the same page at the same time ... and even then should it occur and people reach a consensus, it will be short lived, lasting until that particular emergency subsides. Folks will gradually regress into their own little world where they are the center of the universe.

Circumstances usually drive people into awareness. People that have been attacked by a vicious government often commit themselves to learning why this oppression is happening, or even how it has come about in order to try and rectify it. For instance, when one sees billions of dollars of debt "forgiven" by the government towards a foreign entity while some American that was taxed to give that money away loses his home over an unpaid parking ticket the hypocrisy is beyond acceptance. Worse in my mind is the callousness demonstrated by the average American regarding war. Real people suffering unnecessarily in order for a few rich, sick assholes to profit is acceptable "if it keeps us safe, or reduces our gas costs" ...

War has become business as usual. Every generation of American can expect to serve in the war machine and personally witness innocence murdered wholesale with brutal expediency. I can't and I won't take it.

While I know many think we need government to resist anarchy, pave the roads etc., I think the opposite especially when the government goes rogue, builds empire and paves those roads over the dead bodies of innocent children. I loathe the U.S. government with every fiber of my being. And I become more anti- social by the minute because the people in the country have become so self- consumed that they see the dead bodies as a common occurrence like a TV series without any consideration for the sanctity of life unless it's theirs.

So, forgive me if I excuse myself from this social abomination and refuse to participate in its fraud, theft and murder. I don't care what the costs are personally because I always consider the scripture that admonsishes us to fear not he who can kill the body but he that can destroy the soul.

The attention being given and the money spent to promote the farcical comedy of electing people not even qualified to be the prom king and queen, while humanity is ignored suggests a void exists in the soul of mankind.

The glaring hypocrisy that goes unanswered by the people when a corporation is given a tax waiver in the millions through some lobbyist and greedy politicians, while a waitress working at a greasy spoon has her little pittance of a paycheck reduced (taxed) to support the politician taking bribes instead of buying her kid a pair of shoes, turns my stomach.

The government has become a bully rather than a servant. People fear the government that is directed to protect them. Happy smiling hypocrits waive at the throngs of idiots that they will abuse as soon as they're elected, and the people are too stupid to quit "returning to their own vomit". I have simplified my approach to the current U.S. government to 2 words ... fuck you !

How can we get everyone on the same page at the same time ... when oppression reaches an unbearable level the people will be forced to resist it or die. This oppression is not uncommon, it's just uncommon in our country in our life times.

Dee, please understand that I am pro-Christian, but anti-government. This guides my impressions of politicians. Bush's failures have only solidified this perspective in my mind. I realize it's a dilemma, and I respect your value for Palin's exhibited values thus far.

I'm not exactly the greatest fan of gubmint myself, buckeye!

I am, however, always searching for the truth........that is what counts in my book.

We will never have perfection in elected officials, regardless of who got in if there were free and fair elections! Period. I guarantee you Ron Paul's shit, so to speak, will/would have stink to it--though some would try to convince others it was some sort of new perfume.

I think it incumbent upon us to seek the truth, to sift and sort through the bullshit to arrive at the best conclusion.

We just now saw the crap with the BO is admitting he's a muslim, when he did no such thing----that crap stinks regardless of which side of the aisle it comes from. I'm not defending beloved BO---I want the truth, not the bullshit that was being peddled over that. Crap, the way that was cut and doctored, should make the most jaded of jaded folks stop and think about just how lying, slimy, lying, slimy it has all become. The truth is so distorted and manipulated that people are grasping at anything and everything--true or not--so as to favor how they feel about life/government/politics in general.

I can't believe this board has devolved to all the negativism it has---it seems like most everyone here would hate their own mother in their bitterness and sour grape lifestyle.

Variety of posters makes it more difficult for one faction's darker interpretations to be accepted as gospel by all. You point out the folly in my posts, and I point out what folly I see in someone else's. I admit my preference. I'm not pretending to not like Obama and cover for him.

Not that I like McCain to much. But at least the culture will be pretty much the same and less multicultural then if Obama were to get in there. If Obama does by chance get in there. I hope that I am wrong about him. I will give him a chance and see what he actually does.
