Horrifying coincidence in beheading

By ANDREW HANON

Nathan Carlson has barely slept since July 30.

"Ever since it happened, I haven't been able to get it out of my head," Carlson says haltingly. "I just don't know what to think of it, quite frankly."

The Edmonton ethno-historian is one of the world's leading experts on Windigo phenomenon, and the recent horrific beheading and alleged cannibalism on a Greyhound bus bound for Winnipeg from Edmonton rocked him to his very core.

As the grisly details of Tim McLean's last moments on Earth came to light in the following days, Carlson sank deeper and deeper into a fog of horror and revulsion.

Vince Weiguang Li is accused of abruptly attacking McLean, who by all accounts he didn't even know -- while McLean slept on the bus.

Up until a few days before the killing, Li held a part- time job delivering newspapers in Edmonton. He was well thought-of by his boss and considered a nice guy, if a bit quiet and shy.

On July 20 -- just 10 days before the killing -- Li delivered copies of the Sun that contained an extensive interview with Carlson about his research into the Windigo, a terrifying creature in native mythology that has a ravenous appetite for human flesh. It could take possession of people and turn them into cannibalistic monsters.

The two-page feature talked about how, in the late 1800s and into the 20th century, Windigo "encounters" haunted communities across northern Alberta and resulted in dozens of gruesome deaths.

In one case, a Cree trapper named Swift Runner was hanged after admitting to killing and eating his wife, children, brother and mother in the woods northeast of Edmonton in the winter of 1878-79.

Prior to being charged with murder, he had suffered screaming fits and nightmares, which he attributed to being possessed by a Windigo.

In several other cases, people banded together and killed individuals they feared were possessed by a Windigo. Often, they would decapitate the corpse and bury the head separate from the body in order to keep it from rising from the dead.

Carlson documented several cases in northern Alberta communities where people believing they were "turning Windigo" would go into convulsions, make terrifying animal sounds and beg their captors to kill them before they started eating people.

In last month's bus case, Li allegedly butchered McLean's body, brandishing the victim's severed head at the men who trapped him on the bus until police could arrive.

He was later accused of eating McLean's flesh.

When he appeared in a Portage La Prairie courthouse on charges of second-degree murder, the only words Li reportedly uttered were pleas for someone to kill him.

A lot of his reported behaviour eerily mirrors the Windigo cases recounted in the newspaper feature that Li helped deliver to Edmonton homes just days before McLean was killed, one of the most gruesome slayings in modern Canadian history.

Several media reports called McLean's killing unprecedented - an unspeakable, random attack the likes of which has never been seen in Canada.

But Carlson knows better.

"There are just too many parallels," he says.

"I can't say there's definite connection, but there are just too many coincidences.

"It's beyond eerie."

Local expert in war of words over Windigo

By ANDREW HANON, SUN MEDIA

In recent weeks, Edmonton ethno-historian Nathan Carlson has been called everything from a raving lunatic to an egomaniac trying to raise his own profile by exploiting a horrifying tragedy.

"It's been terrible," he said yesterday. "I can't believe the things people have been calling me."

Carlson is one of the world's leading experts on what he calls Windigo phenomenon, a condition where people believe they have been possessed by a Windigo, a mythological native monster with an appetite for human flesh.

Carlson was horrified last month over the beheading and alleged cannibalism on a bus bound from Edmonton to Winnipeg and its parallels to the Windigo phenomenon.

Less than two weeks prior to the incident, the accused killer - Edmonton newspaper carrier Vince Weiguang Li - had delivered issues of the Edmonton Sun featuring an extensive interview with Carlson, detailing his studies of grisly accounts of beheadings and cannibalism by Albertans in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

But when Carlson said in a nationally-circulated interview that he was horrified that Li might well have read the feature just days before the bus attack, Carlson became the object of ridicule on some Internet discussion boards.

"Windigo? Really? This is a joke, right? Does Carlson honestly believe this? *sigh*" sneered one poster.

"The Windigo business ... has no place in the news," wrote another.

"The devil made me do it has never been a strong defence for violent crime. I don't blame you for being ashamed of your bretheren believing in Windigo.

"As Canada slides down the slippery slope of immorality, get used to hearing about more evil spirits released into your earthly plane, above the 49th parallel," wrote another on U.S. discussion board.

"People thought I was saying the bus killing was caused by Windigo possession," Carlson said.

"But what I really said was there might be a connection between the article and the incident."

He was afraid that the article might have put ideas in the head of someone already seriously mentally ill, not that anything supernatural had occurred.

Very interesting, thank you.

I thought this was a curious coincidence as well:

Lughnasad: July 31st, Day of the celebration of being the predator not prey.

The murder occurred on July 31st.

The Windigo And The Beheading

I lived in Northern Alberta for 10 years.

Never saw a Windigo though.

I don't want to get into advocating 'the devil made me do it' arguments for criminal - especially criminally insane behavior.

But I do consider myself a Fortean, and Charles Fort would have catalogued this incident for sure.

I like that, thank you very much for the link.

"....Vince Li migrated to Canada from China 4 years ago. The Winnipeg community took him under their wing. Vince Li was reserved and well liked. Vince Li showed that he was lost sometimes but refused to seek professional help for his problems. Vince Li suddenly developed the habit of taking bus trips. Friends heard that he went away to look at land but doubted that he had the money to buy property. Vince Li had a wife in Winnipeg but he uprooted himself to Edmonton. After some time, Mrs. Li joined her husband in Edmonton.

One time, Vince Li was upset about getting a traffic ticket and he recounted the incident to a friend. Vince Li said that “they were after me, there was nothing there.” This was one of the indications that something was not quite right with him.

Vince Li’s former church pastor at the Baptist Church will discuss with some people on how they could render assistance to Vince Li.

Updated August 2, from Edmonton, Canada. The murder happened on Wednesday night and by Friday morning, Vince Li made his first court appearance. The prosecution lawyer asked for a psychological report but the judge said he wanted to give Vince Li the chance to consult with his lawyer first. Vince Li was able to nod his head in response to a question asked by the judge. The judge asked him if he was exercising his right not to speak and Li understood and nodded his head.

Vince Weiguang Li worked as a newspaper delivery man. His former boss, Vincent Augert, said he worked on Monday, July 28, 2008. When Vince Weiguang Li failed to show up for work on Tuesday, July 29, Vincent Augert called his cell phone and a woman answered. She identified herself as Vince Weiguang Li’s wife. He had left town on an emergency and she had no idea where he went, according to Mrs. Vince Weiguang Li.

Vincent Augert knew that Vince Weiguang Li worked at McDonald’s too. Vincent Augert, whose relationship to Vince Weiguang Li was as his newspaper delivery supervisor, said that Li was a nice guy........

....Vince Li spent an hour chatting and smoking with a woman named Stacy. Stacy was Tim McLean’s colleague in North American Midway Entertainment. Stacy has returned to British Columbia, in Canada. Now, the McLean family are curious about what Stacy and Vince Li talked about.

Tim McLean had messaged his girlfriend, Alexandra Storey, that some bus passengers had consumed ecstasy. Alexandra Storey said she suspected Stacey may have said something that triggered Vince Li’s attack on Tim McLean. Alexandra believed that Vince Li did not just change seats and pick out Tim McLean without reason.

A family in Winnipeg who knew Vince Li told the press that they suspected Vince Li was suffereing from paranoid schizophrenia. Je refused to seek treatment.......

Updated Aug 7.

The story about Stacey on the bus is false. Stacey was on a plane at the time of the murder. Vince Li sold his laptop for $60 to Darren Beatty, 15, a gas station worker. Darren Beatty said there were letters, resumes, photos and personal data of Vince Li stored there. Police have removed the laptop for investigations.....

Vince Li was in a psychiatric hospital for 4 days. You can be sure he was PDHed (given pain, drugs, hypnosis). No further discussion, really. Psychiatry is a dangerous fraud, funded by Medicare, supported by fundraising. Was he given electroconvulsive shock therapy, insulin shock, a brain operation, anti-psychotic drugs…? Somebody please investigate and report to the world. Toronto Western Hospital is expanding its DBS - deep brain stimulation - to 200 people, from 50. This is an implant which delivers 24 hour electric current to the brain. They are frauds and a lethal dangerous element to our safety. They are creating killers. Please do something about it. Check out Citizens Commission on Human Rights. Watch “Psychiatry - Industry of Death”. Please help our poor failing culture. Eradicate the psychs. Put Li’s psychiatrist on trial for second degree murder, too!!!........

Is this another psy-op, mind control operation?

I would believe a supernatural affliction in this case before I believed this was some sort of psy-ops. Why? Let us say such killers can be created by the evil govt - and I am not saying they can not - they probably can - It would cost a good piece of change to do so. It takes around $2 million per marine recruit to train them. I would think taking a man like this and making him a snap killer would cost at least that much if not more because it is secret.

And once you do this then you let him loose on a bus to kill people one or two or a dozen people on a cross country bus??? Sorry. It begs credibility.

But I am open to discussion about it - even when I dismiss something I first consider it.
