Barack Obama's speech in New Hampshire

Courtesy of the Obama campaign, here are Barack Obama's remarks from New Hampshire earlier tonight (as prepared for delivery). If I get the text of Hillary Clinton and John Edwards' speeches, I'll post those too.

Remarks of Senator Barack Obama - New Hampshire Primary Tuesday, January 8th, 2008 Nashua, New Hampshire

I want to congratulate Senator Clinton on a hard-fought victory here in New Hampshire.

A few weeks ago, no one imagined that we'd have accomplished what we did here tonight. For most of this campaign, we were far behind, and we always knew our climb would be steep. But in record numbers, you came out and spoke up for change. And with your voices and your votes, you made it clear that at this moment – in this election – there is something happening in America.

There is something happening when men and women in Des Moines and Davenport; in Lebanon and Concord come out in the snows of January to wait in lines that stretch block after block because they believe in what this country can be.

There is something happening when Americans who are young in age and in spirit – who have never before participated in politics – turn out in numbers we've never seen because they know in their hearts that this time must be different.

There is something happening when people vote not just for the party they belong to but the hopes they hold in common – that whether we are rich or poor; black or white; Latino or Asian; whether we hail from Iowa or New Hampshire, Nevada or South Carolina, we are ready to take this country in a fundamentally new direction. That is what's happening in America right now. Change is what's happening in America.

You can be the new majority who can lead this nation out of a long political darkness – Democrats, Independents and Republicans who are tired of the division and distraction that has clouded Washington; who know that we can disagree without being disagreeable; who understand that if we mobilize our voices to challenge the money and influence that's stood in our way and challenge ourselves to reach for something better, there's no problem we can't solve – no destiny we cannot fulfill.

Our new American majority can end the outrage of unaffordable, unavailable health care in our time. We can bring doctors and patients; workers and businesses, Democrats and Republicans together; and we can tell the drug and insurance industry that while they'll get a seat at the table, they don't get to buy every chair. Not this time. Not now. Our new majority can end the tax breaks for corporations that ship our jobs overseas and put a middle-class tax cut into the pockets of the working Americans who deserve it.

We can stop sending our children to schools with corridors of shame and start putting them on a pathway to success. We can stop talking about how great teachers are and start rewarding them for their greatness. We can do this with our new majority.

We can harness the ingenuity of farmers and scientists; citizens and entrepreneurs to free this nation from the tyranny of oil and save our planet from a point of no return. And when I am President, we will end this war in Iraq and bring our troops home; we will finish the job against al Qaeda in Afghanistan; we will care for our veterans; we will restore our moral standing in the world; and we will never use 9/11 as a way to scare up votes, because it is not a tactic to win an election, it is a challenge that should unite America and the world against the common threats of the twenty-first century: terrorism and nuclear weapons; climate change and poverty; genocide and disease.

All of the candidates in this race share these goals. All have good ideas. And all are patriots who serve this country honorably.

But the reason our campaign has always been different is because it's not just about what I will do as President, it's also about what you, the people who love this country, can do to change it.

That's why tonight belongs to you.

It belongs to the organizers and the volunteers and the staff who believed in our improbable journey and rallied so many others to join.

We know the battle ahead will be long, but always remember that no matter what obstacles stand in our way, nothing can withstand the power of millions of voices calling for change. We have been told we cannot do this by a chorus of cynics who will only grow louder and more dissonant in the weeks to come.

We've been asked to pause for a reality check. We've been warned against offering the people of this nation false hope. [NOTE: SAY WHAT?]

But in the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about hope. For when we have faced down impossible odds; when we've been told that we're not ready, or that we shouldn't try, or that we can't, generations of Americans have responded with a simple creed that sums up the spirit of a people.

Yes we can.

It was a creed written into the founding documents that declared the destiny of a nation.

Yes we can.

It was whispered by slaves and abolitionists as they blazed a trail toward freedom through the darkest of nights.

Yes we can.

It was sung by immigrants as they struck out from distant shores and pioneers who pushed westward against an unforgiving wilderness.

Yes we can.

It was the call of workers who organized; women who reached for the ballot; a President who chose the moon as our new frontier; and a King who took us to the mountaintop and pointed the way to the Promised Land.

Yes we can to justice and equality. Yes we can to opportunity and prosperity. Yes we can heal this nation. Yes we can repair this world. Yes we can.

And so tomorrow, as we take this campaign South and West; as we learn that the struggles of the textile worker in Spartanburg are not so different than the plight of the dishwasher in Las Vegas; that the hopes of the little girl who goes to a crumbling school in Dillon are the same as the dreams of the boy who learns on the streets of LA; we will remember that there is something happening in America; that we are not as divided as our politics suggests; that we are one people; we are one nation; and together, we will begin the next great chapter in America's story with three words that will ring from coast to coast; from sea to shining sea – Yes. We. Can.

A 'Feminist' Opines On Sarah Palin As VP | Sweetness & Light

http://sweetness-light.com/archive/another-insane-rant-from-a-lefty-woman-hater

Excerpt:

"Pissed about Palin

McCain’s running mate is a Christian Stepford wife in a sexy librarian costume. Women, it’s time to get furious.

By Cintra Wilson

Sept. 10, 2008 | Sarah Palin may be a lady, but she ain’t no woman.

I confess, it was pretty riveting when John McCain trotted out Sarah Palin for the first time. Like many people, I thought, “Damn, a hyperconservative, fuckable, Type A, antiabortion, Christian Stepford wife in a ’sexy librarian’ costume — as a vice president? That’s a brilliant stroke of horrifyingly cynical pandering to the Christian right. Karl Rove must be behind it.”

Palin may have been a boost of political Viagra for the limp, bloodless GOP (and according to an ABC/Washington Post poll she has created a boost in McCain’s standing among white women to a 53 over Obama’s 41). But ideologically, she is their hardcore pornographic centerfold spread, revealing the ugliest underside of Republican ambitions — their insanely zealous and cynical drive to win power by any means necessary, even at the cost of actual leadership.

Sarah Palin is a bit comical, like one of those cutthroat Texas cheerleader stage moms. What her Down syndrome baby and pregnant teenage daughter unequivocally prove, however, is that her most beloved child is the antiabortion platform that ensures her own political ambitions with the conservative right. The throat she’s so hot to cut is that of all American women.

I don’t want Sarah Palin being the representative leader and custodian of my rights, my Constitution and my country any more than I want polygamist compound leader Warren Jeffs baby-sitting for my preteen goddaughters.

As a woman who does not believe what Palin believes, the thought of such an opportunistic anti-female in the White House — in the Cheney chair, no less — is akin to ideological brain rape. What this Republican blowup doll does with her own insides in accord with her own faith is her business. But, like the worst and most terrifying of religious extremists, she seems very comfortable with the idea of imposing her own views on everyone else [snip]"

Can you feel the love?

Not if we disagree about what constitutes being disagreeable.

Her's the real reason Obama may win. The last period of perceived "prosperity" was when Clinton was in office. He represents the Democratic Party. People remember that and don't know much else. Hence, a vote for the Democrat Party.

Well, we shall have to help people with some history then. I bumped into this, and will post for those who can properly pick it apart:

"Somewhere I have an article that pointed out that the only reason that we skipped Clinton's Epic Depression is because Bush et al put us on a war economy.

In the article, that I will try to find, I pointed out their logic... which goes like this... we can lose hundreds of millions world wide in a worldwide depression, or we can lose tens of thousands in a war. And what the heck... maybe we'll get some oil out of it...

Well, we all know we didn't get oil out of it... but up until a few months ago... The United States and most of its citizens were buoyed up by the rising equity in their houses, and enough credit cards to buy anything they wanted...

We are now in the same place that we were in during the last days of the Clinton years. Our next President will be faced with a massive worldwide depression... What will the next president do to keep the world from collapsing under the weight of broken banks, broken financial firms, broken real estate, homeless, jobless, hungry, sick...

Needless to say, neither of our selected candidates are commenting about the coming depression. What will they do to keep us afloat? Start more wars? Attack Russia or Iran? "[snip]

The Legacy of Bill Clinton AN EPIC STOCK MARKET CRASH

Date: Mon Dec 4, 2000 5:31 pm

FOLLOWED BY AN EPIC DEPRESSION

ARE RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER

Future Generations Will Call this Time

"The Clinton Depression"

For weeks / months the world has been treated to one guess after another as to what great things Bill Clinton would do before he left office so that someone would remember him for something .... other than sexual perversion and of course: Monica

And last week the world finally saw what the legacy of Bill Clinton and Liberalism will be: An Epic stock market crash followed by Epic Depression....which future Generations can look back on as: The Clinton Depression.

In a mere 9 months the NASDAQ has lost 50 percent of its value..... a record fall since the country was formed.

Granted that the vast majority -- made totally ignorant as another part of the Clinton legacy -- Total Destruction of the Education system for the insane concept of equality -- are still in total self denial that they made bad choices in choosing stocks and are still completely convinced that if they only do as bubblevision instructed: buy and hold forever they will be wealthy.....while of course in the real world instead of being millionaires they are facing poverty / loss of homes / stress beyond belief

But such are the results of an education system that teaches blind accepatance instead of the need to question everything

But since it is the Liberals who have done so much to promote universal stupidity in the pursuit of their nonsensical equality it seems only fair that those who will be the first to suffer will be Liberals....or at least so I presume......And it would seem that the first major ones to suffer will be government workers as tax flow to government next year suffers a horrendous drop. Now granted, so far, no one but me is discussing this. But the fact remains that over the last few years tax as a function of GDP to the State and Federal Governments has increased far faster than the GDP itself has increased and the reason is all the capital gains taxes from soaring markets as well as all the stock option profits and much higher sales taxes as the profits from ever higher stock markets were spent.

Now, even in a year when stocks finish lower than they started some will have sold stock in earlier years for less than any price during the current year....but, for the most part most also have losing stocks that can be sold in tax loss selling to reduce capital gains and the onerous taxes they imply. So, one would expect that the sum total of Capital Gains taxes would be much lower next year than this....and worse for government many already paid estimates in March, June and September and with tax loss selling and such will be due signfificant refunds. Looking at the NASDAQ one suspects that few stock options will be exercised at a profit for many years. In the depression of the 30's many stocks did not exceed their 29/30 highs for 30 years and in the crash of the Nikei in 1990 most stocks are still less than half their 1990 values 11 years later. One also suspects that with losses in all directions consumer spending .... at least by boomers and the odious soccer moms who helped ruin the county by voting for liberals because their stocks were up will be sharply lower.

So, state and federal government are not only going to have much less revenue next year but also owe very large refunds for this year. Government spending is of necessity going to take some awesome drops next year.....and the wonderful part is that with all this equality (50 / 50 ) in the Senate and nearly tied in the House no plan / policy to do much of anything .....let alone significant tax increases to make up for the loss of capital gains revenues has the chance of a snowball in hell....and mostly because Al Gore worked so hard to infuriate every possible Republican with his recounts and made bipartisianship a non-existent policy for many years to come.

The Federal government can of course borrow the hundreds of billions it needs to continue its programs....but that will trash the dollar and bond market and BARRONS today quoted Richard Russell of the Dow Theory explaining that we are now in part two of a primary bear market....that is the part where reality strikes and most realize they are going to lose everything they had invested.........Mr Russell felt that the DJI would fall to four thousand more or less....and that will eliminate capital gains for many years to come

State governments for the most part by their own constitutions must have balanced budgets and can not borrow and so one expects that the state level spending will be cut by 25 to 35 percent next year which I suppose means that between one in four and one in three state workers will be fired. California is spending a hundred billion this year but I suspect that as reality strikes they will have income of 75 to 80 billion with forecasts of much less the following year. But whether they sharply cut spending on education / welfare / medical care for the poor / the onerous regulations of state agencies I have no idea.

But I do suspect that most state employees / teachers are died-in-the wool-liberals and it is very pleasant to see that as a result of their campaign of universal stupidity they will be the first to be jobless.

And since virtually everything government workers engage in is a massive mal-investment as far as society is concerned nothing would do the economy civilization more good than to have permanent unemployment for most government workers.

Currently about 800 billion a year is spent on education grades 1 to 12 and yet a quarter of those brats are so lazy / stupid that they are still illiterate at the time of high school. Certainly about 200 billion of that education expense is a complete waste. Granted that other government programs work to remove any all motivation for most kids to study and so they do not. As long as you have mal-investments like AFDC so that generation after generation has done nothing but produce people too stupid and unervated to learn and develop the skills to earn a living other than by having kids so another generation will be cursed with welfare there is very little reason for kids to go thru the trauma of studying when they can get a higher standard of living from AFDC / Crazy kids / housing allowance / food stamps / free medical care....and yes, I know the politicians are ecstatic because they got rid of welfare with welfare-to- work.....but I am rather strongly convinced that as state spending decreases by 25 to 30 percent a year the need for welfare will increase at a very rapid rate at the same time as the ways of funding it are decreasing at a very rapid rate. In the Great Reckoning it pointed out that in 1825 England was at very pleasant place for those needing welfare such as it was and by 1835 Oliver Twist was written by observing the streets of London.....on the same scale I think we are at about 1832.

I am quite sure that the transition from full employment to significant employment will be far from tranquil when government is suffering vast drops in income and can not provide new programs as needed.....but all that tension / riots / civil unrest will also be part of the Clinton Legacy that Bill and Hillary Clinton worked so hard to achieve

The assumption inherent in your question is that he actually has a brain and is not an automaton doing what it has been programmed to do.

Liberty is not a means to a higher political end. It is itself the highest political end.

The poster's comment box is where the editorializing goes. Leave it out of the titles please.

That also pisses off people who originate these pieces who might not like the 'fair use' concept, and could attack reposting to places like this if you add content to their material not made clear is not theirs'.

I have seen far to many titles skewed one way or another in a manner not helpful to the discussion process. So I make it a point to make a point it is wrong to do that.

I feel that way even when I agree with the title tweeter's opinion. Now, if you are trying to guilt trip me with the use of the epithet 'cop,' don't bother. I am hip to that tactic too.

But thanks for asking. Nothing personal here, so don't think I am trying to pick on you.

I find adding to titles, when brief, to be quite helpful. Now titles that go on for days can be annoying, but I'm hip to the passion.
