WASHINGTON -- With negotiations continuing on a $700 billion bailout package torpedoed yesterday by House Republicans, President Bush said today that he is optimistic a compromise will emerge. "We are going to get a package passed," Bush said in a statement outside the Oval Office this morning. "We will rise to the occasion, where Republicans and Democrats will come together and pass a substantial rescue plan."

OK, here goes, with Rovian strategery in mind. Go after your opponent's strongest suit. In this, the Dems, and Obama's being, as widely held, the economy. Crisis comes along. Or pushed, but that's tangential. Force the issue, sucker punch the Dems, Repubs taking on populist hues. Create the problem - IMPASSE - new plan, by McCain is the solution. He pops up in Oxford, a little late, but having taken care of the nation's business. Now, mind you, don't judge this by quaint criteria such as facts or actual responsibilites, we're in the 21st Century, just look at it with a Machiavellian tinge interspersed with the postmodern symbolic qualities of modern politics. Consider the Democrats had the votes to pass this measure without the votes of House Repub holdouts. Why were they so insistent on having Boehner et all on board. To spread the blame and diffuse America's anger by maintaining the situation is so dire that all parties came together. McCain/Schmidt called their bluff.
This is Hank Paulson's proposal. The Democrats are just along for the ride. Congress is irrelevant anyhow post-Patriot Act. Hank wanted a rubber stamp, hasn't gotten it yet and, if necessary, Chimpy will declare the "economic emergency" if this isn't rubber stamped by the end of the month.
