Title: The "Sin" of Confederate Hero Worship

This week, I took my family to Virginia in pursuit of one of my favorite summertime activities, visiting Civil War battlefields. We traveled to the four great battlefields around Fredericksburg, where more than 100,000 soldiers died in the course of the war. I also fulfilled my lifelong dream of visiting Appomattox Courthouse where on April 9, 1865, Lee famously surrendered to Grant, in effect ending the war.

What consistently baffles me in making these visits is the romanticism of the Confederacy that continues 140 years after the war’s end. Wherever you go in the South, Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis, J.E.B. Stuart, James Longstreet, and the other Confederate leaders are venerated as heroes. In the course of my travels, I have driven on Robert E. Lee Drive and Jefferson Davis Highway. I’ve seen myriad monuments to Stonewall Jackson, and I’ve seen the Confederate flag flying from cars and homes.

As an American who loves his country, I am appalled by the persistence of Confederate hero worship in the South 140 years after the Civil War’s end. After all, the South fought for a truly evil cause. While there were other factors that led to the Civil War, no serious, objective historian would deny that the principal cause of the war was the institution of slavery, and that the South fought to preserve its “peculiar institution.”

Whether or not the soldiers of the Confederacy personally believed in slavery, they still fought to preserve the hideous, reprehensible practice of buying and selling human beings–each and every one created in the image of G-d–like animals. Babies were torn away from their mothers’ breasts; men, women, and children were whipped like beasts. This was the essential, defining institution that the Confederacy struggled to keep.

The South is a nation. America is not.

Does the Rabbi want them to be replaced by Israeli flags?

The South was in the right.

Wrong again. We wanted the right to decide for ourselves.

To say the 'War of Northern Aggression' was fought over slavery, is the same as implying the bailout is for Main Street not wallstreet.

Complete and utter nonsense. And this dickweed did not even mention Sherman's march to the sea.

The average southerner, at the time, was up to his ass in alligators, just think of the black slaves as the modern day mezcans. No different.

Just as the mezcans were preceded by the vietnamese, who were preceded by the chinese, who weren't preceded by the native indians, because those sumbitches fought back.

Moral of this story: Fight Back.

Furthermore, now, instead of importing the slaves, we export the factory to Slaveland.

Pretty cool, huh?

BS! If an honest list of reasons for the war were compiled and they listed ten things, slavery would be closer to the bottom than the top.

Remember in 1848 on the floor of Congress, Lincoln gave a speech extolling the rights of any people to revolt and remove any government that no longer served them.

Of course, once he was in charge as president, all of that was illegal and would get you thrown in prison.

In the Civil War, the North won and America lost.

Visiting civil war battlefields is one of my favorite pastimes too. I enjoyed sitting on little round top in Gettysburg, fantasizing how life would be different if Lee had listened to Longstreet and gone around the right.

Gawd I wish the south had won. :)

I shall not vote for evil, lesser or otherwise.

Hi, Y'all ~

Author Schmuley Boteach must have read a different history book than I did. The principal cause of the War for Southern Independence was not slavery, but taxes. When the North doubled the tax on cotton exports to England, the South declared its independence. That explains why Fort Sumter was attacked: It was a revenue collection facility for all merchant vessels leaving and entering Charleston Harbor in South Carolina.

More to the point, slavery may have been a rallying point for abolitionists who wanted to free the slaves, the fact is that the battle cry of the North was not "free the slaves," but "preserve the Union."

Lastly, I have read both versions of the constitutions for the Confederate States of America. Both contained provision for the eventual elimination of slavery. What the South objected to concerning slavery was that the North wanted the South to simply free the slaves. The South objected on the grounds that doing so violated the Fifth Amendment (nor shall private property be taken for public use without just compensation).

If the author of the article loved his country as much as he said he did, one would at least expect him to know the history of that nation.

Amen?
