Beware Charismatic Men Who Preach 'Change'

Editor, Times-Dispatch:

Each year I get to celebrate Independence Day twice. On June 30 I celebrate my independence day. On July 4 I celebrate America's. This year is special, because it marks the 40th anniversary of my independence.

On June 30, 1968, I escaped Communist Cuba and a few months later I was in the United States to stay. That I happened to arrive in Richmond on Thanksgiving Day is just part of the story, but I digress.

I've thought a lot about the anniversary this year. The election-year rhetoric has made me think a lot about Cuba and what transpired there. In the late 1950s, most Cubans thought Cuba needed a change, and they were right. So when a young leader came along, every Cuban was at least receptive.

When the young leader spoke eloquently and passionately and denounced the old system, the press fell in love with him. They never questioned who his friends were or what he really believed in. When he said he would help the farmers and the poor and bring free medical care and education to all, everyone followed. When he said he would bring justice and equality to all, everyone said "Praise the Lord." And when the young leader said, "I will be for change and I'll bring you change," everyone yelled, "Viva Fidel!"

But nobody asked about the change, so by the time the executioner's guns went silent the people's guns had been taken away. By the time everyone was equal, they were equally poor, hungry, and oppressed. By the time everyone received their free education it was worth nothing. By the time the press noticed, it was too late, because they were now working for him. By the time the change was finally implemented Cuba had been knocked down a couple of notches to Third-World status. By the time the change was over more than a million people had taken to boats, rafts, and inner tubes. You can call those who made it ashore anywhere else in the world the most fortunate Cubans. And now I'm back to the beginning of my story.

Luckily, we would never fall in America for a young leader who promised change without asking, what change? How will you carry it out? What will it cost America? Would we?

The 19th Amendment is destroying America...

It ain't just the 19th amendment. Congress really screwed us royally when they passed the Federal Reserve Act and the 16th amendment. Country has been going downhill ever since then, slowly at first but then faster and faster. It seems to be on its last trip around the bowl.

I think they should just delete every amendment after the first ten. And I think that the politicians and judges should respect those and not try to get around them or claim they mean things other than what they plainly say.

22 amendment???

All of them after the first ten. Think about it for a minute. If the folks in Washington actually respected the Bill of Rights and followed the Constitution, would it make all that much difference who the president was or how many terms he was in office?

James...

Yes and I will say why I believe that.

The 22nd amendment was the LAST effort made in the interest of the people to ward off the possibility of a dictatorship provided by the people themselves.

Way back in 1861, the South feared professional politicians and in their Constitution limited their President to a one six year term. The North did not awaken to this until FDR had a lock on the presidency. Roosevelt did not even bother to campaign in 1944, knowing he was in for life, and he was.

In our lifetime, we have had senators staying until they are 100 years old.

When the 22nd was passed, we should have had term limits for all. That was our greatest mistake. The 22nd was supported by all, men, women, black, white, rich, poor, dems and pubs. Without it we would have Clinton or now Bush for life.

Yeah, I understand your point and knew why you made it. But my point is that it wouldn't matter if we had a chimp in the White House--which is close to what we have now--IF the House, Senate and Courts respected the Bill of Rights and not try to tell us that they meant things which they clearly do not mean. The president is pretty limited in what he can do if the Congress won't raise the funds for him to do the stuff he wants to do (like make wars on people who haven't harmed us). I have no use for FDR either and think that he would have done America a huge favor if he had toddled off into a river about the time he got old enough to toddle. But as for having Bush for life--have you seen the polls on Bush lately?

James...

The people we have sent to Washington have never followed the rules since they found out that they could make a career out of politics.

If you read Madisons notes, you will see that the Fathers rejected term limits only because in their minds the people sent to Washington by the people, "would stay for a season and then return home to their normal life"... On that point they erred greatly and we are paying the price. They were principled men, few have followed them.

The South tried to change it and failed. Only Rutherford B. Hayes did the honorable thing..he said, "If elected I will serve one term, there will be no corruption and then I will go away"... He did.

Most men lust for and love power.
