I am a seasonal Harry and David telephone order person. I get an interesting image of how people are by paying attention to small things about the conversations with them while helping them. I expect to see the effect of the economy through allot of conversations about orders of gifts to friends, family, and for business reasons. I wish I could share anecdotal stuff, but that would violate privacy of Bear Creek/H&D's customers. But it always has a strong impact on my thinking when I work the holiday season there. I never expected that to be the case when I started doing this in the mid 80s.
Suffice it to say that they're being a LOT more careful about every penny spent?

Yes. With much fretful comments half to themselves when pruning gift lists and deciding on which gift to send to show their love and consideration. I have spent up to ninety minutes with people who might be putting in the last gift basket someone will ever get from 'Uncle Joe' or old 'Aunt Mary.' It hurts my average horribly to do that, but that is my job and I take it very seriously. The job gives me respect for how important self respect and functionality is to people who have seen better days in their lives. I have never released a call unless the person got abusive and would not let themselves be prompted to start over.
