It's a compliment.

Remember at the end of the Vagina Monologues, Eve Ensler led everyone in the venue chanting enthusiastically, "CUNT! CUNT! CUNT!".

It was deemed to be liberating and empowering.

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your counsel nor your arms. eve from Michigan, USA , October 7, 1999 wonderful book, even better when read in the authors voice. I read five pages. I was dragged to a reading Then I dragged others to a reading This is the best book I've read all year. The whole thing is filled with sections which make you sit back and think, "I can relate."

Lara Tobin (latobin@syr.edu) from Syracuse, NY, USA , September 27, 1999 an empowering commentary for women & an education for men Reading cunt, while not agreeing with all of the author's theories, I could relate to the feelings and actions in the book, and felt empowered and inspired by her thoughts and words. this book is excellent for men to read to understand some aspects of a woman's life, and as an example of a strong, intelligent woman.

A reader from los angeles, ca , August 22, 1999 read it, go out and buy lots of copies for your friends while i do agree with the other los angeles reviewer who noted that the book is a little too centered around a simplistic dichotomy of dick=opressive power/cunt=beauty and all things positive, there is much in this book that is worth reading, worth mulling over, worth embracing. and, in a sense, thank god(dess) there are a few areas i couldn't wholeheartedly agree with (ie- why not lump all male artists into the category of phallic worshipping cuntfearing agressive oppressors?-like alice walker, i ain't about to give up john lennon..or james baldwin, or faulkner..)-because any book one finds oneself in complete fawning agreement with is suspicious as dogmatic and narrowly sectarian. let us argue over some sections, revere others, and value this book for what it is: an easy to read (though, for some, hard to swallow) discussion of so many typically ignored/negatively portrayed aspects of what it means to be a woman in a body. for that, i say go out and buy more copies, make sure your local bookstores carry this book: show support for ms. muscio and her efforts....read again, laugh here, dissent there, feel inspired there, relate there....

A reader from New Orleans, LA , August 5, 1999 A must read for all women and those that love them! I had not read a book that touched me in such a way in a very long time. Inga Muscio writes in a very poignant and honest style. I believe this should be required reading for all young women.

wigmag@aol.com from Utah , July 29, 1999 Cunt rules and if you don't think so, you don't get it. When you read a book that changes something fundamental inside you, and you can't stop thinking about it for days, and you find yourself referring to it constantly, and you carry it with you in your backpack and relay specific quotes into your journal for safekeeping--then you know you've tapped into a literary archive of incredible genuius. Cunt: A Declaration of Independence, is such a nugget. Ms. Muscio interviews influential, provocative women such as Diamanda Galas to point out how society has shaped our view of women. Although the section on Periods and Birth Control may make some twitch in their chairs, the humor and frankness with which she illuminates how society has reviled thse things for so long, makes you yearn for a world where periods are a monthly "blessing." Some may find the subject matter and language too provocative and blunt to handle. All the more reason, if you ask me, to read Cunt. As for the word itself, by the time you're done with the book, you'll have no problem screaming it from the rooftops or informing your neighbor on the train when asked what you're reading, "Why Cunt, of course!"

A reader from ann arbor michigan , July 13, 1999 my new bible This book really made a big impact on me. I honestly can't understand what those people were thinking when they criticized it soo harshly. this book is genius. But more than that, it's celebratoritory. It doesn't make excuses for either sex. It holds women and men accountable and it looks toward the future. The future, my friends, is bright. And with people like Inga Muscio leading us into the future, we will undoubtedly enter a new renaissance within humankind.

bjaldworth@email.com from Denver, CO , June 18, 1999 If you have a cunt, you owe it to yourself I read this book for my all-woman book club, and the cunt meeting was, without question, our best meeting to date. We sat around as a bunch of cunt-lovers and laughed. More importantly, though, we spoke and listened. In a few hours, I made some great friends, and learned much about my self and the other women in the room. In the reading of the book, we learned so very much about our bodies and history. Granted, cunt does have some technical flaws, but it motivated me to protect myself and other women in my community, and it gave the BitchCakes the strength and will to organize a free self-defense clinic in the park. As one of the members of the book club said at the end of the night, "Doesn't it make you want to start a revolution?"

UltrVilot@aol.com from USA , June 10, 1999 Must buy for feminists or women who have any self respect This book has a totally different perspective on life than I had ever thought existed. It got me excited to be a woman. I laughed, pondered, cried, and got angry while reading Cunt. This book helped me understand myself and other women better than any other book out there. This is for ALL women, don't let the title scare anyone away. It is worth carting around and getting strange looks for!!!!

A reader from Los Angeles, CA. , May 3, 1999 Flawed, but Phenomenal It would seem that to date, reviews of “cunt” fall into two camps: those who unreservedly love the book (and likely were strongly predisposed to doing so before they’d ever seen the dust jacket), and those who hate it with an all-too-unsurprising virulence (expressed in generalities suggesting these critics may not have cracked the spine at all, or done anything more than peruse the description on the book’s rear cover). A less strongly pre-agenda’d, although by no means ‘objective’, reading might prove more informative:

On the one hand, there is much in “cunt” that is problematic. The book is far too prone to telescoping gender into the genitals, literalizing the cunt as an abstractly idealized and ontologically primary font of identity. This points to a larger confusion, namely that the book is frequently unclear on the differences between the cunt as anatomical materiel and as metaphor. Additionally, and despite a clearly demonstrated lack of misandrony (“cunt” is in no way, shape or form a male-hating screed), Muscio frequently reduces the world to a dichotomy of dick/male=arrogated power vs. cunt/female=site of oppression and resistance. “cunt”’s approach thus precludes the book from addressing how patriarchy deeply and systematically exerts control over people with dicks as well, even (and especially) those who haven’t thought to spend a single second recognizing how patriarchal relations twist both their conceptions and lived realities. Thus, “cunt” has little to say about how males and females are reciprocally culpable in the continuing, self-repressive reproduction of patriarchy itself and, in this silence, largely fails to grapple with how any effective and durable response necessitates that we all participate, regardless of whether the sperm-derby stuck us with a double-x or an xy.

These critiques aside, however, the book willfully veers between the hilarious (in a laugh-with, not laugh-at, way), the deeply touching, the instructive, and the joyously celebratory, all the while remaining well attuned to significant differences within the category of ‘female’ itself. Muscio enthusiastically, relentlessly, and with unfailingly outrageous good humor points out the ludicrous double-standards yoking females from without and within, double-standards that've become so commonplace as to leave most folk immobilized beneath the assumption that it’s “just the way things are.” And, beyond this act of recognition, Muscio offers a treasure trove of prescriptions, many of them outright fun, for what to do about it. Thus, “cunt” is a powerful arsenal against the relegation of more than half the planet's population, generation after generation, into second-class-citizenship, and for this “cunt” is a must-read.

hannaruth@hotmail.com from Boston, MA , April 28, 1999 FANTASTIC!! "Cunt" is making me laugh, smile, giggle, and wince in recognition. What a fabulous tome! Go out and buy this book from your local independent bookstore! Muscio's prose is inviting, engaging, silly, and right on!

It's interesting that the negative reader reviews have all been so harsh and vitriolic. This book is a very welcome breath of fresh air. Imagine, actually *celebrating* womanhood! I know, what a radical concept, right? Too bad that some men and self-hating women can't get past all the crap they've been taught about women and feminists. Women are beautiful! Feminists are beautiful!

Long live Inga Muscio and cuntlove!

A reader from LA, CA , April 21, 1999 victim mentality This book was a wonderful instruction booklet of how to turn your "i am an opressed white upper middle class woman" vicitim mentality around by using the techniques of the oppressive upper middle class white male structure.

Highly recommended for white girls whose parents sent them to a liberal arts college but who feel a little lost in the world as far as identifying what their real "issues" are and exactly how to combat their "oppression" as "victims" of society.

A reader from New York , April 19, 1999 DON'T BOTHER this book was poorly written, boring and uninsightful. i do not suggest that you read it.

striebelh@quinney.law.utah.edu from USA , April 19, 1999 This is a vitally important book, thank you Inga! Reading this book affirms the beliefs that we as women know to be true inside ourselves but on which we are so rarely encouraged or even allowed to openly hold forth. Inga Muscio speaks the truth and what a powerful sense of freedom she offers to those who will open these pages and read. The word cunt had always held such fear and revulsion for me and to realize how in so many insidious ways this extended to our perception of ourselves as women, chilled me. While reading this book, I cried and laughed and interrupted my husband more then a dozen times as shared with him the words that showed me the way to be free. Our society makes this road very difficult to navigate and this book can be your guide. Reflect on the title, it has so much to say to all of us. Change the way you perceive the word cunt and you change the way you percieve yourself. I will be sure all of my friends have an opportunity to read this book and I will tell all women that they no longer have to be afraid.

A reader from Seattle, WA , April 12, 1999 BORING AND PRETENTIOUS THIS BOOK WAS A BIG DISAPOINTMENT. IT HAS OBVIOUSLY RECIEVED THIS UNWARRENTED ATTENTION DUE TO THE PLETHORA OF BLIND SUPPORT IN THE NEOFEMMINIST MOVEMENT. IT WAS BORING AND PRETENTIOUS

bottle_blondie@hotmail.com from San Francisco, CA , March 23, 1999 It was v. good. It's been a long time since I've read a book that I couldn't put down. I read chapters at work with post it notes over the probably offending title and found myself scowling at customers who interefered with the amazingly conversational and engaging flow of this book. Cunt will remind you why it is so much hard work and fun to be a woman. And you'll wish you were best friends with the author. Silly, angry, thoughtful, resourceful, generous and absorbing.

A reader from Washington, DC , March 16, 1999 Written with strength, humor and love of womanhood. How wonderful to read a book written by a woman, about being a woman, without the usual androcentrism of male bashing, or how to snag the man of your dreams. Muscio writes with such clarity and frankness that there is no room for self-pity. She writes frankly about some of her prior life experiences and decisions without making excuses or blaming men. Rather, she is absolutely focused on the power that she has harnessed as a result, and encourages other women to find and harness their own woman power.

The title of this book is so stark that many will, unfortunately, miss out on how beautifully and with such love that it is written. Still, it is the most powerful book that I have read in a long time. Moreover, I strongly recommend this as a resource for any sort of womens' support group or literary group. I would also recommend this for college curricula in a feminist studies or gender class (in conjunction with "Reviving Ophelia"), provided the title will not prevent it from being carried on a campus bookstore.

willingsinner7@hotmail.com from California , January 19, 1999 Pure Brilliance!!!! While being pro-female, this book never subscribed to anti-male sentiment or overly feministic posturing. An essential for every woman or anyone who's ever had a mother, sister, girlfriend or female figure in their lives. Armed with superior intelligence and a wicked sense of humor, Inga Muscio is pure brilliance!!!

eric@rapid13.org from Atlanta , January 18, 1999 Who says feminism is dead? I immediately gave this book to a friend when I was done and ordered more copies to pass around. I am going to give one to my daughter, my mother, and a few friends. It is profound and accessible - you will laugh, you will cry and hopefully, you will hear...

Andi Sayre (warwoman@hotmail.com) from Southern Ohio , January 18, 1999 Cunt... is a must read for every woman. Now that I have read this book I cannot imagine not having read it. I want every woman I know to own cunt and utilize the resources within it. Musico writes in a comfortable, approchable voice that allows you to imagine the two of you are drinking a cup of tea and having an intimate conversation which she will beg you to repeat to every woman you meet. This book should go on your shelf next to Our Bodies Ourselves, Beloved, Bastard Out of Carolina,Geek Love, and anything by the Guerrilla Girls. This is required reading for all you high minded women out there. When you are done reading this book you will never be the same....and that my friends is a good thing.

A reader from Great Neck, NY USA , January 3, 1999 A book every PERSON should read! Cunt : Declaration of Independence by Inga Muscio, should be a classic book! A book with a shocking title, that lures you in! This book by far, is the best book about a woman’s body, for all readers, not just women. Inga, is truly a wordsmith, that commands a high power vocabulary and uses it through-out this book. Buy it, Read it! Share it with your friends/spouses.

A reader from Las Vegas, NV , December 28, 1998 This book is awful This book was pure drivel. It was the biggest waste of time I have ever had to endure. It is a load of ultra-feminist crap. I don't know what that mac840 person was thinking when he/she wrote her review.

mac840@yahoo.com from Nome, AK , November 10, 1998 Great book This was one of the greatest books I have ever read. It made me laugh. It made me cry. It made me very angry at times. It has to be one of the most thought provoking pieces of literature ever written.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I love the penis/bad, cunt/good part in one of the first reviews. It's almost as funny as the comment that states "Must buy for feminists or women who have any self respect."

Though I haven't read "Cunt", I did read its companion volume, "Penis". Let me offer my review of that fine work.

Though there were some musings on the elasticity of the foreskin that I found difficult to relate to, this book still made shivers of recognition reverberate up and down my spine. Throughout history, penis has been reviled and mocked. But this brave book makes it OK to celebrate and sing about penis.

I first read "Penis" in my all-male book and ballet appreciation group. We laughed, we cried, we had swordfights. It made us all feel so wonderfully manly. It allowed us to admit that our fascination with football related much more to the sinewy buttocks of the participants than our make-pretend interest in strategy and athletic excellence.

Buy this book! Share it with the guys in your sauna group! Give a copy to your Dad, and give another copy to your Dad's roommate!

It's your penis. It's your friend. Buy it a beer, or better yet - a shot of Peach Schnappes. I could cry with joy at the new found closeness my penis and I enjoy since reading this masterpiece!

Please leave us now. We'd like to be alone.

Cunt: A Declaration of Independence,

It may not be the kind of independence they want. The women who read this stuff have themselves in a condition that nobody wants them for more than a half hour of desperation.

You know, as a women, this totally offends me. Everything lovely, precious, and beautiful about a woman and her femininity is dragged into the open, degraded, humiliated and cheapened by these Feminazis' in the name of equality.

I am ashamed of my gender. "A must read for every highminded woman" Highminded about what? About her own selfworth? Not a shred of decency, modesty, charm, intelligence, or honor in the lot. I wonder if there is hope, even from the naysayers, if they bought the book to begin with.

I am no prude, but I can't think of a more repulsive title if I wanted to. And I surely would not pass this book around to 'friends, relatives, spouses' lest they forever associate me with that word's mention.

And one last remark, (while I'm on my soapbox) I hope it is p-nis/arrogated power in any man who's around me. I hope there is character, honor, strength, power and the will to use it. I would hate to think he would only be thinking I should have worn the green eye shadow to make my blue eyes stand out, and wouldn't the kitchen look more 'homey' with a few more plants...etc ad nauseum... But what do I know...I'm just a low minded woman who thinks her place is in the home...

And one last remark, (while I'm on my soapbox) I hope it is p-nis/arrogated power in any man who's around me.

Penis is not G-d, so it needn't be hyphenated. It is also not a vulgar word, as is the "C" word, so it's okay to spell it out.

When I searched amazon.com for the title, I was shocked that several returns came back. I only expected one. I saw this at a George Washington University area bookstore. An "upscale" one at that.

Inga's not the only freak out there. Search amazon.com if you dare.

No need to be ashamed, TBoone. These very strange and odd woperits (ixnay on "wo-men, rewrite to wo-person; ixnay on woper-son, rewrite to "woper-it") really aren't members of the gender you that you graciously represent. Feminists believe there are, in fact five genders, although I have trouble remembering more than three of them.

eric@rapid13.org from Atlanta , January 18, 1999 Who says feminism is dead? I immediately gave this book to a friend when I was done and ordered more copies to pass around. I am going to give one to my daughter, my mother, and a few friends. It is profound and accessible - you will laugh, you will cry and hopefully, you will hear...

Sure, get a copy for your pastor too.

Society slips further backwards on a daily basis. Who would want to worry about what happens to a society such as this?

How many of the men/alleged men on this forum run around calling their wives, mothers, daughters, or female friends these sort of filthy things? Get in an argument with your wife about whats for dinner and ya start in with this crap?

Yeah.....we should really care about such a lousy society. NOT.

I had not read a book that touched me in such a way in a very long time.

LOL!

Guess I missed this cultural nugget entirely.

Of course, all the howling about the evil penis makes me laugh.

The first thing lesbians do, after badmouthing men for their objectification of women and whatnot, is to go out and buy the first six to eight inches of a male standin. We hate men, but we love the plastic penis.

Too much.

KUNT, KUNT, KUNT. But, honey, I meant it in the best manner possible.

It sure seems like election time brings out even the more worstest in people. There's so much hatred around. I dislike a lot of things, but pure unadulterated hatred?

Frankly, had my husband ever used any language anywhere close to what I only imagine is on these shirts, WWIII would have started. These 'people' who are emboldened to walk around in public showing their perverseness need to be around my Mother for a bit. She'd have them straightened out--and rather quick, too. If they have no respect for themselves, it is only a matter of time before they use that language on their wives, their Moms, their daughters, their girlfriends.......

I salute you, Cyni, for having spoken up about some of the language bandied around on this board--including some I spouted off myself. It really is a matter of respect-- for oneself, and ones friends.

Thank you.

Even if she's some 'tough' broad, imagine how it would be to have one of the kids ask her or Todd what that meant. For sure, if parents won't tell you, there are others out there in the world who will......and 'age appropriateness' is meaningless in this world we live in when it comes to the dark side.

Iraqis are being attacked and killed for returning to their homes By Corinne Reilly, McClatchy Newspapers Mon Oct 13, 5:33 PM ET

BAGHDAD — Haj Ali's family had been home for less than a month when a makeshift bomb blew off part of his garage. The message was clear: Go back to wherever you came from.

Two years ago, when Sunni Muslims began killing Shiites in Ali's west Baghdad neighborhood, he quickly gathered a few belongings and fled. Last month, his family returned home. They didn't stay long.

"We thought it was safe," Ali said. "Now I see that for us, home means death. There are still people who don't want us there."

Only a small fraction of the roughly 5 million Iraqis who've fled their neighborhoods in fear since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion have returned, although returns have picked up since the Iraqi government last month began urging people home.

Now its reached the level of a degree of dishonesty, angle.........since when does one copy their own comment in response to a response by that person to the same comment WITHOUT COPYING THEIR COMMENT, RATHER THAN YOUR OWN.

It seems you knew what you were doing, too because the sentence you then used was, 'and your posts continually show your bias towards Mccain-Palin', which suggests to someone who hasn't followed this whole dialogue closely that it was Cyni who would be more impressed by...blah blah blah.

Let me spell it out. Originally I thought there were those on this forum of like mind...people who recognized that the government of this country was bought sold and paid for and that the "parties" were nothing more than an illusion to placate the sheeple.

Beginning with the pro-Ron Paul movement and the support generated from those of which I was among, people here seemed pretty cohesive on the general philosophy. When RP bowed out, cyni was his biggest critic. Ok, it seemed over the top to me but everyone was disappointed and left somewhat rudderless. Then Robin, ari and ghost and others like Red Jones and Burkeman1, BrianS and a few more I don't recall started leaning towards Obama as the someone who's gonna be in charge and their reasoning was it's better Obama than McCain. They were set upon like pariahs.

I disagreed with them as well, seeing the two party farce for what it is. The whole "filter" uproar happened and a large group left. In hindsight, the forum lost some good people.

Currently however, I find it telling that the people like Old Friend and X-15 and others who are McCain supporters do not receive ANY level of discourse against their position like the hounding Robin received. After Palin became big news, she was and is practically lauded here. Even Lodwick lost his mind for a short time. But there are still those here who say they won't vote McKook, but they're all about Palin. You don't see any inconsistency there? Do you also think Palin is outside the two-party fraud?

As far as any of my posts being pro-Obama, they aren't.

Other than cyni who accuses me of being an "Obamaphile" and a "financial expert" when he gets called on the carpet for his "baiting" crap, if there are others who think I'm pro-Obama, you should be wary of who's advising you.

If you think I'm pro-Obama, speak up and we'll discuss whatever is giving you that mistaken perception. I'm not going to post to this board and let all the pro-Palin/McCain propaganda slide without posting other points of view.

However, if you're leaning the way of Palin/McCain and you take exception to the articles I post, let me know. I won't waste my time and energy being part of a forum whose mission is secretly other than what's stated. The forum is only as good as the people who post here. If my views aren't wanted here, please, you let me know straight up. Otherwise I'll continue to post articles and my viewpoint.

Nobody has called for you to walk the plank. I certainly haven't attacked anybody for their proposed votes (Ferret Mike) for Obama, though I think he'll suffer buyer's remorse sometime into next year if it is Obama. Ron Paul left everybody in a messy lurch and didn't handle his exit with much aplomb, somebody got to him and told him to knock it off. As much as I despise McStain (see my sig), I cannot abide an Obama presidency because I foresee a very real possibility of another civil war at worst, or several acts of insurrection/terrorism at the least with his sorry socialist ass in the White House. This election and the future direction of our country is bigger than any of us mere mortals posting here.

i don't think you're pro-obama. in fact i set those who misunderstood you straight just as i'm doing with you with Cyni.

me leaning toward palin/mcCain? i have made it quite clear my disdain for both branches of the establishment party. i've never wavered from that. i have been an advocate of Rock the no vote for years. Ron Paul was the only one for whom i would have re-registered to cast a vote even though i am convinced that our entire system is a fraud and that we-the-people don't elect anyone.

frankly, i've been just as surprised as you over posters here who have decided to go the choice of lesser of two evils.
